maintaining their rank among
the nation's "top 10" teams.

not setting a goal for the 1959
Athletics like I did last year
when we were aiming for
victories and beat that by
three games.
I won't even say that we
will be a first division con
tender. But we will be shoot
ing for a .500 percentage and.
If we hit that, we won't be
far out.
I believe we can hit the
.500 mark this season with a
little natural improvement
and the bench strength we
have added.
Additions like Wayne Ter
williger, John Bella and Dick
Williams have given us that
bench strength we have sore
ly needed.
They and some other young
fellows will give us more ma
neuverability this season and
the competition for jobs this
spring will be greater than It
ever was.
And a little competition
never hurt anyone.
Battle for First
First base, in particular,
will be an interesting position
this spring. Fellows like Pres
ton Ward, Harry Simpson,
Whitey Herzog, Kent Hadley
Jim McManus, Hal Smith and
even Bella and Williams will
be out to win it.
If I had to name my first
baseman today, I couldn't do
It. It wouldn't be fair to those
fellows.
But pitching is the most im
portant thing to the ball
club.
Unless someone changes my
mind, we'll start out with the
same rotation that we got go
ing toward the end of last
year. Bob Grim, Ned Garver,
Ralph Terry and Ray Herbert.
My mind is still open on the
fifth starter.
Of the young pitchers, I'd
say Howard Reed, the big
Texan, has an excellent
chance of making the ball
club. He's got the stuff and
good control for having only
one year of experience.
Grim could be the No. 1
man on our staff from what
he showed in the last two
months last season.
Bob Cerv and Roger Maris
will give us defense and
punch in the outfield.
Praises Lopez. De Maestri
Bill Tuttle in centerfield is
better and more valuable' than
the record indicates. He hit
only .214 last year, but he got
the key base hits and key
bases on balls.
I can't say that the rest of
the infield is set, but Hector
Lopez swings a good bat and
showed good improvement
when we shoved him in at
second base last year; there's
no question about the defen
sive ability of Joe De Maestri
at short, and you couldn't ask

tract today with the signing
of southpaw Walter Craddock
and shortstop Rac Slider.
Craddock, 26-year-old Mount
Hope, W. Va., product, is one
of the big question marks for
1959. The young left-hander
had an 0-2 mark and little
service for the A's last season
after an 18-8 season with Buf
falo the year before.
Slider, 25, a slick fielder
from Simms, Texas, batted
221 for Little Rock after re
turning from service and be
ing bothered by a bad leg.

West Paces West Virginia
West looped in 29 points to

ginia to a 77-67 win over
George Washington. The
Mountaineers sank only 26.8
per cent of their first-half
shots and trailed by 12 points
at intermission, but West led
a pressing attack that turned
the tide.
The only other team in the
"top 10" to play Monday
night was ninth-ranked Brad
ley. The Braves, who rely on
a balanced attack rather than
a single ballyhooed star, also
came through with a victory,
77-63, over Detroit. Dan
Smith paced the Braves in a

ON MAGAZINE COVER The pint-sized Triumph-powered
dragster, above, owned and driven by Jack White, Medford,
and familiar to valley drag racing fans, appears in a color
photo as the front cover subject of the February issue of Rod
and Custom, a Los Angeles publication. The magazine is cur
rently on local newsstands. Pages 18, 19, 20 and 21 are
devoted to the speedy little racer which has picked up tro
phies in B dragster races and in C dragster competition
against big cars. White's machine is described as 241 pounds
of dynamite. It is called perhaps the world's smallest drag
ster. The article tells of the car reaching beyond 100 miles
per hour. The pee wee machine has been chauffeured by
White at 102 mph. White, owner of White's Cycle center on
North Pacific highway, reports that a new engine is under
construction and looks for new horizons in performance.

Ugly Swings
'The Swing's

Palm Springs, Calif. -There
was a day when all golfdom
proclaimed: "The swing's the
thing."
But take it from the tour
ing professionals, it doesn't
hold true any more.
"All you have to do is take
a look at some of the top
money-winners on the circuit
today," says Bo Winninger,
who has been making a high
living off the circuit for a
decade.
"Of course, it's nice to have
a beautiful swing. I think I
have a pretty good one my
self. But that doesn't always
pay off."
Bo opines that his swing
should be worth more than
the $435 a week he is making
this year.
"There are some beautiful
golf swings on the tour," he
pointed out, "Ken Venturi's,
for instance.
"But down through the
years some ugly swings have
made a lot of money. Take
Bob Rosburg, for instance.
His isn't the best by a long
shot, but last year he won the
Vardon trophy for having the
lowest scoring average per
round for the year.

o'clock to renew rivalries
where they left off last
Wednesday night.
SOC's Raiders and the Owls
of OTI have clashed once this
year in an extremely close
game in Klamath Falls which
the Raiders won 71-67 in the
closing minutes of the con
test.
The Raiders are in extreme
ly poor shape with Punk Bid'
dington, Glen Peterson, and
Dave Love all having some
trouble or another. Bidding-
ton still has an injured knee,
Peterson is recovering from a
separated shoulder, and Love
is nearly well from a sprained
ankle.
This leaves the Raiders with
seven able ballplayers with
two men up from the Jayvees
to fill some of the gaps and
give the Raiders none phys
ically able men.
Four Regulars Set
Southern Oregon will have
four of its regulars in its
starting lineup in addition to
Dick Smith who was a starter
in the OTI game last week
which the Raiders won -by
four points.

lery of spectators. Activity
started about 8 a.m. and con
