Accountant Lacks Reports From Beck
Tacoma, Wash. -CPD- Carl
Houston, a certified public ac
countant who aided in making
out Dave Beck's income tax
returns, testified Monday he
and his associates did not
even yet have all the details
on Beck's assets and liabil
ities. Houston, who assisted Lud
wig Lobe in computing Beak's
returns from 1950-1954, made
the statement at the former
teamster president's income
tax evasion trial here. Beck
is charged with evading S240,-
000 in income taxes from 1950
to 1953.
Lobe testified earlier that
Beck refused to give him in
formation on loans and ex
pense accounts while the re
turns were being made up.
The trial continued today,
More than one-third of the
nation's total lumber supply
comes from the three Pacific
coast states of Washington
Oregon and California.

coma, a disease which might,
if present, cause blindness.
Then they want me to tell
them how to treat it. Natural
ly, I say, "Run quickly to an
o p h t h a 1 mologist who can
measure the tension of the
globe of your eyes and can
then tell you whether or not
you have glaucoma. It would
be criminal of me to treat
eyes by mail.
I know, of course, how hard
it is for a person on a lonely
ranch or in a mountain vill
age to find a competent
specialist;.! sympathize deep
ly with such people and it
hurts me when I cannot even
try to help them, but often I

Incidentally, I devoutly
wish that all persons living in
a small town, when they ask
me to give them the name of
a city specialist would tell me
what their nearest big city is.
Here, for instance, comes --a
letter from a nice woman in
what is evidently a small
town in California, asking for
an eye specialist for her little
boy who is holding his book
a few inches from his eyes.
Unless I go searching through
my atlas, I can't guess
whether to pick for the boy
a doctor in Dunsmuir, Sacra
mento, San Francisco, Los
Angeles, or San Diego.
People whom I must fail to
help are those many who
write and say, "Send me
everything known on harden
ing of the arteries, heart dis
ease, anemia, indigestion, or
bladder trouble." I once wrote
a big thick book on just a few
phases of indigestion, and it
took me many years to do it.
Saddening are the many, let
ters I get from people who
say: "My doctor told me I
have emphysema. I asked him
to tell me all about it: how it
started; where I got it; how
bad is it; what will it do to
me; will it kill me, and if so,
in how long a time? But be
fore I could get all my ques
tions out of me, he showed me
the door. He said he had no
time in which to write me a
book. Now you write and tell
me all about emphysema."
Unfortunately, I am terribly
busy too-so busy I cannot
take much of my day off to
answer all those questions. I
hope, during the next year, to
prepare a number of booklets
on the commoner diseases
which will be distributed
through my column. Perhaps
these will help.

Oregon Guardsmen
May Retain Beards
Salem -(UPD- The beards of
Oregon National Guardsmen
may stay on after all.
The National Guard Bureau
in Washington, D. C, indicat
ed Monday it had no objec
tions to Guardsmen growing
beards for the Oregon Centennial.
Earlier. Ma1. Gen. Thomas
E. Rilea had ordered guards
men to keep clean shaven in
line with general military nol-
icy. State Sen. Monroe Sweet-
land objected and went to
Gov. Mark Hatfield Monday.
Hatfield asked Washington.
D. C. for an opinion.
Hatfield was expected to
confer today with Carl Cover,
assistant Oregon adjutant gen
eral. Gen. Rilea is hospitalized
in Portland.
Ashland Man Plans
Suit Against County
Jack E. Malone, Crowson
rd., Ashland, has notified the
county court through his at
torney, Bruce J. Manley, that
he intends to file suit for
$2,000 against the county as
result of a water drainage
problem in his area.
The complaint involves a
water drain from a roadside
ditch which the county re
portedly cleaned December,
1958.
A suit also has been filed
against the county by Robert
T. Hutchison, Medford, who
is seeking $750 in. damages
and S600 in attorney's fees
and costs as a result of a car
accident July 13, 1958, on the
Dead Indian rd., about 12.3
miles east of Dead Indian and
Highway 66 junction.
Hutchison charges that his
car hit a ridge in the road
about a foot high on the edge
of a sunken portion of the
blacktop road surfacing. He
charges the county was negli
gent in allowing the bump
and hole to remain, failing to
give warning, and failing to
repair the county road.
