Ashland-Southern Oregon,
a pushover the night before,
battled Portland State for two
overtimes before the home-
standing Vikings gained a 75
to 67 victory on the jump
shots of Stan Weber Saturday
evening.
Portland State now has un
disputed possession of the top
spot in the Oregon Collegiate
conference with the Red Raid
ers of SOC dropping to second
spot with a 5-2 record.
Raider G or die Carrigan
pushed the game into over
time when he sank two field
goals in the final two min
utes to knot the score at
55-55.
In the first overtime Dick
Smith put the Raiders ahead
with a field goal and a free
throw but John Winters
stormed back with a like to
tal to knot the score again
at 58.
Smith added another free
throw and Carrigan donated
two more but the Vikings
kept pumping them in too.
Carrigan got SOC the edge
in the second overtime but
then Weber put in three con
secutive jumpers and the
Vikings could not be caught.
Rav Toreerson added two
gift tosses for PSC and Dave
Love hit a field goal along
with Laval Meunier's two
free throws to cap the Raider
scoring.
John Frederick of PSC hit
two from the free line and
Weber gunned in two more
for the final 75 to 67 count.
Carrigan copped high scor
ing honors for the fatal quest
with 24 and Portland's Win
ters had 21.
Southern Oregon had held
a 25-21 halftime lead by vir
tue of play that was quite a
reversal of ,the evening be
fore. Each team appeared to
be playing apprehensive and
deliberate basketball with nei
ther team going to any drastic
measures.
SOC led through most of
the first half but never by
more than five points.
The Riders were in poor
physical shape after the clash
from the evening before for
Glen Peterson was unable to
play with a dislocated shoul
der and Dave Love had a
badly twisted ankle 'which
left the Raiders shorthanded
with only seven able ball
players.

Grants Pass Beats
Ashland High 55-28
Grants Pass - Grar is Pass
High, which , topped Crater
with two Caveman regulars
absent on Friday, had a third
first stringer missing here on
Saturday night but still had
plenty to whip Ashland 55 to
28 in a Southern Oregon con
ference basketball game.
By the decision Grants Pass
took lone second spot in the
league standings.
Taking advantage of cold
Ashland shooting, the Cave
men broke away from a 7 to 4
first quarter bulge to lead
23 to 8 at the half. Third
quarter standing was 32 to 16.
Johtmie Olson had 16 points
for Grants Pass and Rick
Sabin 12. Don Taylor was
high for Ashland with nine.
The Grizzlies went scoreless
for four and three minute
stretches in the second quar
ter. After closing to 6 to 7
in the panel, they saw GP go
to a 16 to 6 lead. Then it was
18 to 8 before the Cavemen
added another five before the
midway horn.
Got Good Chances
Ashland was getting good
shots but just couldn't make
the ball go through. The
Grizzlies made only three
field goals in 25 attempts and
two free shots in 11 tries in
the first half.
Free shots helped Grants
Pass pad its spread in the last
quarter.
For the second game of the
week end Grants Pass was
without the services of their
biggest men John Fox and
Jerry Putnam, out with knee
and back ailments, respective
ly. Rex Benner apparently
suffered a concussion some
time in the Crater scrape on
Friday and did not play on
Saturday.
Grants Pass took the jun
ior varsity opener 39 to 36.

Kentucky Wildcats Near
600th Win Under Rupp
United Press International
The nation's college basket
ball powers swing back into
action this week with Ken
tucky Coach Adolph Rupp
due to notch the 600th victory
of his career and unbeaten
Auburn and rugged St. John's
of New York facing crucial
tests.
All of the top 10 rated
teams will see action at least
once and only a few upsets
could cause mighty upheavals
in the national rankings.
The week's activity starts
tonight with first-ranked Ken
tucky going for Rupp's 599th
win against Georgia Tech,
third-ranked Kansas State
facing Iowa State, fifth-ranked
Cincinnati playing Drake
and ninth-ranked Bradley
meeting Detroit.
There's the possibility of
that big No. 600 for Rupp
when Kentucky plays Georgia
Thursday night - the night on
which rapidly-improving St.
John's faces perhaps its big
gest test of the season against
St. Louis university at St.
Louis. And then there's a
big week end wrapup during
which the Atlantic Coast con
ference's twin powers - second-ranked
North Carolina
and fourth-ranked North
Carolina State - return to ac
tion and sixth-ranked Auburn
puts its 24-game winning
streak on the line against
Vanderbilt.
Auburn emerged as the na
tion's only major unbeaten
team when it beat Georgia,
81-61, Saturday night and St.
Francis, Pa., upset previously
unbeaten St. Bonaventure,
92-81, at Altoona, Pa.
Only three other teams
among the top 10 saw action
Saturday and all won. Cin
cinnati crushed Xavier of
Ohio, 92-66, as Oscar Robert
son scored 38 points; St.
John's blasted St. Francis,
N.Y., 91-44, and seventh
ranked Michigan State took
over the Big Ten lead with an
82-76 conquest of Minnesota.
