Civic Music
Concert Friday
The Griller String' quartet
will present a concert Fri
day, January 30, at 8 pjn. at
the Medford High school au
ditorium. It will be the sec
ond in the Civic Music asso
ciation series this season.
The quartet was founded in
1928 when the four members
were all young students at the
Royal Academy of Music in
London. Since that time they
have played more than 3,000
concerts throughout the
world.
Quartet members . included
Sidney Griller, leader and
violin; Jack O'Brien, second
violin; Philip Burton, viola;
and Colin Hampton, violon
cello. . The men first played in
America February 5, 1939, at
the Town Hall in New York
City where their concert- was
acclaimed by the critics as be
ing the most important and
successful debut recital of the
year. Immediately they were
booked for a tour of the Unit
ed States and Canada. During
the war they were the "offi
cial quartet" for the Royal
Air Force.
The program Friday will
include works of Franz Josef
Haydn, Darius Milhaud, and
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

den club at her home Friday,
January . 16. Thirteen mem
bers and one visitor, Mrs.
Roy Eskew, attended the ses
sion which was conducted by
Mrs. Ernest Gregory, presi
dent of the group.
Mrs. Ferd Jones, program
chairman, spoke concerning
the history of the flower of
the month, which was the
carnation. Mrs. Gregory
spoke on the new All-Ameri-can
flowers. - - .

hostess for a meeting of the
club Friday, February 20.

number of imperial palaces,
the magnificently stylized
gardens, splashing fountains,
the poets, musicians and
mighty heroes immortalized
and perpetuated in marble
and bronze; when you look
to the top of highly orna
mented buildings and see
white angels, golden saints
and green bronze gods, sil
houetted against Vienna's ever-changing
sky.
There is vicarious pleasure
in wandering through the pal
aces and in reconstructing the
resplendence of balls and the
atricals, when sliowering cry
stal chandelieres reflected the
thousands of lighted candles
and in visualizing the infant
prodigy, Mozart, with his
klavier in the bedazzling pic
ture.
That Vienna is gone, but
the symbols linger. Many peo
ple today still revel in the
past glories through rear
view windows. The shadow
of the Hapsburg family hov
ers over them. Older people
even wistfully hppe t o re
store the : old order of . the
monarchy, and to have once
again the Franz Josef re
gime i n a streamlined
form. It is interesting to note
that although with the col
lapse of, the empire in 1918
titles of nobility were abol
ished, - they-continue to be
used, and old names today
have that same . importance
that , was an intricate part of
the feudal way of life.
Pleasantly nostalgic though
it is for them to contemplate
a return to the old glitter, it
must be a dilusion. Obvious
ly, a new Vienna has super
seded the old. Along with the
new buildings, new transpor
tation, new industries, is a
new social class. And it , is
this class who have the auto
mobiles, who buy the ball
gowns and jewelry, who sit
in the loges at the opera, who
have the coveted season tick
ets for the creme de jcreme
of Vienna music, the Philhar
monic. It is they who whirl
to that emblem of the en
chanting city the Strauss
waltzes.
And they do it all with
graceful, easy courtliness
which makes for a lovable
people.

Speech Expert

Leon Mulling of Southern
Oregon college, Ashland, talk
in conjunction with slides he
showed concerning youngsters
with speech defects, at a re
cent meeting of the Gold Hill
Parent-teacher association. He
was introduced to the group
by Mrs. Ida Von Buskirk, pro
gram chairman of the unit.
Anyone wishing to consult
Mr. Mulling about a child's
speech problems may contact
him at the college.
H. D. Force, president of
the association, presided over
the business session. Under a
new ruling," persons working
on PTA committees that find
it necessary to charge items
must present these bills be

"year to the treasurer, Mrs.
Jerry Herrington, or the per
son making the charge will be
held responsible for the bill.
Also approved was the pur
chase of a large folding table,
$50 for which was in the bud
get for this year's PTA. The
table will be used for school
activities and by the unit.

inating committee were H. D.
Force, Mrs. Wilda Franks, and
Mrs. Delos Walker. A report
will be presented at the next
meeting.

parents of children in the
fifth grade were served in the
Hanby school cafeteria by
hostesses for the evening, Mrs.
Leonard McMaban, Mrs.
Floyd Taylor and Mrs. James

"Commemorating a hun
dred years of Catholicism in
Southern Oregon" was . the
topic of a speech given by the
Very Reverend Carl Mai on
Wednesday evening. Father
Mai, pastor of the Sacred
Heart Catholic church, spoke
to St. Mary's High School
Parents' club meeting in the
activities room of the school.
Sister Gerard Mary, sister
superior of the school, ex
plained to the group some of
the requirements for a stand
ardized sehool library. There
is an established minimum
number of books per student
enrollment required. The nec
essity for having a definite
percentage of books on the
state required list was stres
sed.
Jacksonville's St. Joseph's
Catholic church's century cel
ebration will include a Cen
tennial banquet February 1 in
St. Mary's gymnasium at 5
p.m. The Most Reverend Ed
win D. Howard, D.D., Arch
bishop of Portland, in Ore
gon, will be the honored
guest.
Plans were discussed to help
the high school students en
tertain those coming from
Sacred Heart school, Klam
ath Falls, for the basketball
game on February 15. The
game, to be held in the St.
Mary's gymnasium, will be
followed by a dinner. Floyd
E. Darland, Jr., is chairman of
this committee.
