Cancer Often Arises
In A Prepared Soil
Many people probably have
the idea that a cancer appears
suddenly, out of a clear sky.
It can be dis
covered sud
denly enough,
but then a
little study
will often
2 show that it,
or what is
called a "pre
cancerous" ul
c e r or polyp
Dr Alvare had been
growing very slowly for
years. In this way the soil
was prepared. I remember a
man who got a cancer of the
stomach. I . had known him
for years, during which time
he had suffered with a chron
ic type of severe gastritis, or
inflammation of the lining of
his stomach, due perhaps to
his habit of constanly chew
ing tobacco and swallowing
some of the juice. Many a
time I have seen a man get
a cancer of his lip, which de
veloped after years of irrita
tion of the spot where he
held his pipe. ' ,
Or, perhaps, he got a can
cer on the end of his tongue,
where for years the spot was
irritated by the hot smoke of
his pipe. Or, he got a cancer
in his bronchi (the tubes that
carry air into and out of his
lungs), apparently because,
for many years, he had been
a chain-cigarette-smoker and
a sufferer from a chronic
cough. When he died and
came to autopsy I was im
pressed by the fact that the
mucous membrane lining his
bronchi was many times
thicker than normal, due to a
long-lasting irritation.
When long ago I, was an
intern in a big city hospital,
I used to see old people with
a chronic leg ulcer around
their inner, ankle. Occasion
ally, one of these persons who
had kept the leg ulcer long
enough, got a cancer on the
edge of it, again, from years
of chronic irritation.
I recently read an article
by Walter L. Oblinger, Asso
ciate Counsel for the Illinois
State Medical Society. He was
discussing the great tendency
of persons today to sue phy
sicians when they are dis
appointed with the result of
treatment. As he says, many
people seem to forget that in
many a case the physician
cannot promise a cure or even
a good result from an opera
tion. But now some people, are
demanding cures, and when
these Ire not forth-coming, an
effort is sometimes made to
'Middle-Age Spread
Due To Overeating

ice) - The "middle age"
spread is due to overeating. It
is not necessarily the result
of growing older, a Connecti
cut psychiatrist reports. The
belief that there is an inevita
ble increase in weight during
the middle years is "another
myth which has little or no
foundation in fact," Dr. Fran
cis J. Braceland has said.
Cause ' of the - middle age
spread is the same reason to
which spread at other times
of life is due - namely, the
ingestion of too many cal
ories, or to be blunt, to over

hold the physician liable.
Up until a few years ago a
surgeon was sued only be
cause during an operation
something went wrong, or a
sponge was left in the ab
domen. In late years, many a
surgeon has been sued be
cause the patient gained the
impression that the doctor
had promised a good result.
When this was not secured,
the patient sued, not for any
malpractice or negligence or
ignorance, but for a breach
of contract.
Mr. Oblinger said that
when a physician has been
kind to his patient, when he
has tried hard to help him,
when he has been deeply in
terested in his welfare, and
when he has obviously been
greatly distressed when some
thing went wrong, the pa
tient rarely sues.
A True Vegetarian Diet
Some people want to know
if it is possible for a person
to live on absolutely nothing
but fruit, nuts and vegetables.
Yes, it is possible. But it is
difficult to do. I certainly
would never think of trying
the experiment on a child.
The growing child should
have better forms of protein
than can be found in nuts
and vegetables and fruits.
Most vegetarians have the
good sense to add milk,
cream, butter, and eggs. With
these foods, they can general
ly get along well. Milk and
eggs contain good proteins. I
mean by this that some pro
teins lack some of the im
portant amino - acids out of
which our body proteins are
made. In a well-chosen liberal
diet, the defects of one pro
tein, let us say from corn, can
be compensated by the good
points of a protein from milk
or meat.
As I have said before ; in
this column, I have known
people who, starting out in
life on a strict vegetarian
diet, found when they grew
up and had to work hard,
that they just didn't have the
strength to make the grade.
As soon as, they started eat
ing meat, they were well
again. Perhaps a man like
Ghandi, who sat for most of
a day and meditated, could
get along on little besides
goat's milk, but a truck-driver
or a stevedore couldn't.
Hammertoes
An unhappy woman with a
couple of : hammertoes"
wants to know what to do
about them. She has two
toes which, instead of lying
flat, rise up as a sort of
knuckle, which is hard to get
into a pair of shoes. If I had
such toes I'd promptly go to
a good orthopedist and let
him handle the problem. He
might straighten out the toes
and then cause the joint be
tween two of the little bones
in each toe to become solidi
fied, or, as we say in medi
cine, ankylosed. Then the toe
would not be able to rise up
again. "

autopsy showed today that
Ben Lackland, ' 58, veteran
stage and television actor,
committed suicide by taking
an overdose of sleeping pills.
Lackland, who died Thursday
appeared in 30 Broadway pro
