could not account for more
than 13, 12, and 11 points.
Ore Tech held a slight 40-39
halftime lead but throughout
the second half the lead
changed hands numerous
times without any one team
pulling out to more than a
five-point lead at any one
time.
The loss for the Owls leaves
them with a 1-4 record in
OCC play.
The two teams renew rival
ries next Tuesday when they
play a return encounter in the
SOC gym beginning at 8 p.m.

Mickey Mantle, the Yan
kees' famed long-range bomb
er, fired a hot potato from
Dallas, Tex., to New York to-day-and
dropped it right in
the middle of General Man
ager George Weiss' lap.
"Just say I'm dissatisfied,
period," growled the 27-year-old
home run king after an
nouncing that he has returned
his unsigned contract to the
Yankees. "You can add that
I'll never take a pay cut. I'm
planning on a raise."
The size of the pay cut of
fered Mantle, who earned an
estimated $75,000 last season,
ranged from a "token cut" of
$3,000 to a huge bite of $15,
000. Weiss did riot say wheth
er Mantle would be offered a
cut in his press conference
Tuesday but he did say a few
of the world champions would
be unpleasantly surprised
when they saw their contracts.
Averages Fall Off ,
Mantle's average in 1958
fell off to .304 compared to
his .365 of 1957 but he led the
league with 42 homers,
knocked in 97 runs and can
argue he is the American
League's No. 1 drawing card
both at home and on the road.
It is still too early to tell
whether Mantle and Weiss are
about to carry on one of those
old-time disputes in the tradi
tion of Babe F.uth and Ed Bar
row, but it is possible that
they are as much as $27,000
apart at present. Until re
cently it was believed Mantle

ronimo) Jordan, the world's
welterweight champion, is a
3-1 favorite to lick rugged Al
varo Gutierrez of Mexico to
night in a 10-round "over
weight" match which may
technically be Jordan's first
title defense.
Jordan, who scaled only
145 two pounds below the
welterweight limit when he
won the title from Virgil
Akins here last Dec. 5, plans
to enter the ring at 147V2.
But Gutierrez, also a "light"
welterweight, has indicated
he may come in under the
limit.

nassus said the fight origi
nally was contracted with a
stipulation, that Gutierrez
weigh more than 147. The
state athletic commission had
the clause removed, however,
under a rule which prohibits
placing a minimum weight re
striction on a boxer.
Reporters, meanwhile, un
covered another rule which
states that a title will be at
stake "in all cases where the
official weighing in shows the
opponent to be within the
maximum weight limit of the
class."
Clayton' Frye, commission
secretary, said flatly today
that the title would not be in
jeopardy "because the fight is
not scheduled for 15 rounds
and does not have official
commission - sanction as a
championship match."

As a team Southern Oregon
is the offensive leader with
an average, of 77 points per
game. Portland State is a
close second at 74.6.
Defensively, PSC leads
with a 50.3 average while
SOC is in second place, giv
ing up only 56.3 points per
game.

Salmon Angling
Closure Talked
Portland (UPD - The state
game commission said today
salmon anglers may get a
complete closure on the Co
lumbia river and its tribu
taries during November if a
proposal now before the com
mission is approved Friday.
The commission will set fi
nal sports fishing regulations
after a hearing here on that
day.
The closure would prohibit
taking of salmon and jack
salmon during the November
period and would include the
entire Columbia river and all
tributary drainages during
November.
Officials said stocks of fall
races of fish which enter the
rivers in November are in
such condition that full pro
tection is felt justified.
