her action which saved the
life of a driver at the scene

pinned in the vehicle which
had overturned in a roadside
ditch, was unable to keep his
head out of the water. Walsh
noted that Mrs. Horton's ac

ence of mind necessary to
cope with the situation, Walsh
noted.

X Chromosome
May Contribute
To Longevity
Washington -(Science Service)-
The chromosome that
helps determine, sex in hu
mans - the X chromosome -has
been found to be three
times larger than the Y chro
mosome, two geneticists re
ported here.
Since the female has two
X chromosomes while the
male has one X and one Y,
this may help explain some
of the differences between
the sexes.;.
. As a consequence jof the
larger size of the X chromo
some, the human female cell
is about four per cent greater
than the male in chromosome
volume. Thus, the female has
a "substantially richer gene
tic capacity." Drs. J. H. Tjio
and T. T. Puck said in the
Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences that this
may contribute to tne re
male's greater longevity.
Other differences, such as
differences in response to X
ray irradiation and the nature
of malignant growths, might
be explained by the sex chro
mosome size difference, tne
geneticists believe.
Further' Evidence
Drs. Tjio and Tuck, respec
tively of the Estacion Experi
mental de Aula Dei, Zara
goza, 'Spain, and the Univer
sity of Colorado Medical Cen
ter, Denver, also studied the
number of chromosomes
found in human cells. Further
evidencew as reported that
the "real" somatic, or body
cell, chromosome number of
humans is 46. Previously it
was believed to be 48.
Cells from various organs
in 13 persons were analyzed
and exact chromosome counts
performed oh almost 2,000
cells. More than 95 per cent
of these revealed 46 chromo
somes, the scientists reported.
They also divided the chro
mosomes into eight groups on
the basis of size, position of
the centromere and the pos
session of a satellite body.
(The centromere is a small
round body that divides the
chromosome into "arms" and
is believed to play the im
portant role of "nucleolar or
ganizer" in cell division.)
A total of 74 individuals
have now been studied whose
chromosome count is 46
rather than the classical 48.
