uyers, Builders Asked for Opinion On Rules Changes
.Washington,
' H -
V
t
D.C. The
partment of commerce has
ked hundreds of trade buy-
and builders for an opin
hion on changes in plywood
fe ding rules that could save
lions of feet of Douglas fir
fiber from rotting on the
rest floors of southern and
. Antral Oregon.
iThe changes are offered in
(to amendments to the Com
ercial Standard for fir ply-
food used by the industry as
'j I oroaa minimum specuica
k fon. Among them are new
flywood grading rules that
Jj pill control the use of white
pocket.
?lS This is a disease which
. 'starts as a stain and ends as
la maze of perforations in the
wood rimmed with a white
fuzzy substance, cellulose. Ve
ieer infected with the disease
i In its most advanced stages is
excesively weak.
Nw Grading Rules
The new grading ruls are
officially offered by Douglas
'Fir Plywood Association of
z Tacoma, Wash., on the basis
i of an extensive two-year re
search project by the U.S.
Forest Products Laboratory
at Madison, Wise.
"For years," Hall said,
"there has been no adequate
way to use the vast stands of
timber affected with this dis
ease. We just didn't know
enough about it. Our research
has now enabled us to write
minimum specifications for
the use of that portion of this
infected veneer which is usa
ble. Properly controlled, it
will not impair the strength
or glue bond of plywood in
any way."
The forest service estimates
that 65 to 100 billion board
feet of timber in western Ore
gon alone are infected to some
degree. Hall said that if the
proposed changes are accept
ed, up to 50 per cent of this
material which has previous
ly been culled may be used
in plywood.
Douglas Fir Plywood asso
ciation is pushing the amend
ments on behalf of 107 sub
scriber mills who account for
more than 90 per cent of to
tal industry output. Produc
tion in 1958 was 6.2 billion
square feet.
The present Commercial
Standard prohibits the use of
white pocket veneer and
DFPA bars it from plywood
bearing DFPA stamps.

Wilson Warns of Critical Situation
Eugene-On the eve of what
promises to be the most crit
ical decade in the history of
higher education in Oregon,
O. Meredith Wilson, presi
dent of the University of
Oregon, in a message to al
umni last week, warned of
the critical building situation
facing the school.
Within the next 10 years,
enrollments at the university
are expected to soar past the
10,000 mark. By . 1970, they
are expected to climb above
12,000. These figures are
based on the numbers of stu
dents presently enrolled in
elementary and secondary
schools in Oregon. The same
situation holds for other in
stitutions in the Oregon state
system of higher education.
The university is asking for
three major building items in
the 1959-61 biennium request
made of the legislature. Of
first importance among these
is a new science building.
Second is an addition to Con
don hall which would house
classrooms and office space.
