almost sure bet that she's neurotic. If she also
wears clothes that are too young for her, your bet
is a sure thing.
The technique of exaggeration in speech, says
Dr. Lovshin in summing his findings, is easily
recognized and is a positive sign of neurosis. For
example, the neurotic woman always has terrible
pains and horrible aches; nothing is just ordinary
all the complaints are terrific. It's significant to
note in this connection that women are much more
addicted to this practice than men, and that
studies have shown those who are addicted to be
far more neurotic and emotionally unstable.
Dr. Lovshin also finds that this technique of
overstatement can give away more about a person
than perhaps any other characteristic. For ex
ample, he has found that the woman who keeps
repeating that she has the most wonderful husband
in the world has a marital relationship that is defi
nitely suspect; and the woman who insists that her
husband is the most wonderful man in the world,
even before she is asked, is actively trying to hide
her disappointment in him.
With a little practice, the average person can
learn to make a great many shrewd deductions
about others, simply by noting the things about
which they make exaggerated statements. It's the
same psychological principle Shakespeare used
when he wrote: "The lady doth protest too much,
methinks. . .," the Queen's remark to Hamlet about
one of the actresses in the play within the play.
It should perhaps be emphasized that Dr.
Lovshin's provocative tip-offs on how to size up
others are by no means arbitrary judgments and
opinions, but are based on careful clinical observa
tions. But when you use them to X-ray the other
person's ego, there's just a word of caution: take
a look and see that your own personality secrets
aren't showing.
