Residents Reminded
Of Income Tax Filing
Portland Every citizen
of the United States who had
a gross income of $600 or
more in 1958, including mi
nors, must file a Federal in
come tax return on or before
April 15, R. C. Granquist, di
rector of the internal revenue
service for Portland district,
has reminded all citizens.
If the taxpayer is 65 or
over by Jan. 1, 1959, he is
required to file only if his
gross income was at
$1,200.
He added that even though
a taxpayer is not required
to file under these : rules, he
must file to obtain a refund
of any tax withheld from his
salary or wages.
Granquist said there is one
exception to the general rule.

pay a self-employment tax if ;
net earnings from self-em-'
ployment are $400 or more.

He explained that self-em-;
ployed persons are those car-1
rying on a trade or business
as sole proprietors, as mem
bers of a partnership, or ren
dering services as independ-'
ent contractors. s
Granquist said the deadline

and the return mailed to the
"District Director of Internal
Revenue" for the districj in
which the taxpayer lives.
He added that checks or
money orders for any tax due
should accompany the return
and should be made payable
to the "Internal Revenue
Service.'

motor vehicles said today.
Failure to do so can result
in carbon monoxide poison
ing, which, in itself, can prove
fatal and may tie indirectly
responsible for a number of
traffic accidents each year for
which no apparent reason can
be found, other than driver
inattention or "asleep at the
wheel."
Drivers also were reminded
to open garage doors before
starting cars. To "warm up"
the engine in a closed garage
is inviting an accumulation of
the dangerous gas.
Finally, car owners are re
minded that the best way to
prevent carbon monoxide
from entering the car in ex
cessive amounts is to make
sure the exhaust system
works properly.
The word "jaywalking" to
describe crossing the street
against traffic rules was first
used in Harper's Magazine
in June, 1917. "Jay" meant
a wanderer in 17th century
England and later came to
mean a fool or simpleton.

Reported Last Week
Fifty-seven cases of influ
enza led the communicable i
diseases reported to the Jack
son county health department
last week.
Thirty-four were reported
in Medford; 15, Shady Cove;
4, Phoenix; 3, Ashland; and 1,
Jacksonville.
Twenty-three cases of mea
sles were reported, including
18 in Medford, 3 in Phoenix
and 2 in Shady Cove.
Also reported were mumps,
11 in Prospect and 1 each in
Medford and Shady Cove;
pneumonia, 4 in Medford and
1 each in Rogue River, Eagle
Point and Ashland; strep
throat, 3 in Ashland and 1
each in Medford and Central
Point; whooping cough, 5 in
Medford and 1 in Shady Cove.

titis was reported in Central
Point, 1 of chicken pox in
Ashland, 1 infectious mononu

Transient Held in
Jail on Charges
Victor Borkowski, 47, . a
transient, admitted writing a
fictitious check here Thurs
day, according to Medford po
lice. '.
He was lodged in county
jail on a charge of obtaining
money under false pretenses,
police said.
Borkowski, alias Raiph
Reynolos, wrote a $72.54
check yesterday morning at
Robinson Tiros, clothing store,
114 East Main St., according
to the report. The check was
signed "Frank Marks," police
said.
Fred Robinson, co-owner of
the store and a city council
man, told police of the incident.
Alan Arrested on
California Warrant
Cecil Barrow Hendricks,
706 South Oakdale ave., was
arrested Thursday on a Shas
ta county, Calif., warrant
charging issuance of a check
against insufficient funds,
Medford police reported.
Hendricks was lodged in
Jackson county jail. The war
rant sets bail at $2,000.
