an ambitious woman I know, whose husband
is in politics, never fails near election time to
remember people she doesn't even know be
tween times. Putting on the charm reserved for
such occasions, she moved graciously among
the crowd attending a campaign barbecue given
for her husband. Coming upon a nodding ac
quaintance, she inquired about his father.
"My father died two years ago," the man said.
Later in the day, the two met again. With the
same animation, she rushed forward to inquire
about the gentleman's father.
"Well, I'll tell you," replied the friend with a
sigh, "it's like this, Pa's still dead." Miss Vir

A new book about space travel was recently
advertised by local book dealers. I wrote for a
copy and, in reply, received a letter which said
in part: "We are sorry to report that we are
temporarily out of The Inhabited Universe.'"
I'm hoping they return soon. They should

I walked down the line of squatting mer
chants last Summer, admiring both them and
' their crafts. Then, incredibly, I came upon an
enterprising old Indian who had his wares
handsomely displayed in a glass and chrome
showcase. Surprised and a bit amused, I asked
him why he had gone so modern.
He looked both ways surreptitiously, then his
wrinkled face broke into a smile and he leaned
over and whispered, "Had to do something.
These doggone Indians would swipe me blind if

when 1 was in Italy last year, directing Mario
Lanza in the movie, "The Seven Hills of Rome,"
a few of us in the company took time out to go
along on some guided tours.
At the ruins of an old Roman temple one of
our companions, a pretty young housewife, who
had probably scrimped for years to save enough
to make the trip with her husband, looked on in
awe for long moments. Then she bridled and
drawled defensively, "That's mighty pretty, but
it would look doggone tacky back in Georgia!"
