Relations Are
Reported Tense.
London (UPD Authoritative
diplomatic sources reported
today an ominous cooling off
in relations between the Sov
iet Union and Red China.
Tension was said to have
been caused by Peiping's
growing insistence on taking
over ideological leadership of
the Communist party camp
The diplomatic sources said
there was no likelihood of
an open break between Mos
cow and Peiping since the
two nations are largely inter
dependent. But they said re
lations were somewhat icy.
Soviet . Premier. Nikita S.
Khrushchev, also head of the
Soviet Communist party, has
declined to call a halt to Chin
ese aspirations and to reassert
Moscow's leadership of the
Communist world, the sources
said.

for a summit conference with
President Eisenhower and
possibly other Western lead-
era were held as one of the
immediate results of this de
velopment. j
This also would account for
the current visit to the United
States of Deputy Soviet Pre
mier Anastas Mikoyan who
was reported trying to pave
the way for a heads-of-gov-eminent
meeting.
A few months ago Red
Chinese leader Mao Tse-tung
vetoed a summit meeting to
, which Khrushchev already
had committed himself. Khru
shchev now has reported
ready to go it alone-against
Red China's wish and . hold
such a meeting.
The diplomatic sources said
. the broad outline of these de
velopments emerged from re
cent talks between Khrush
chev and satellite leaders in
Moscow.

ducers association, at a meet
ing held in O'Brien at the
close of December, discussed
at length the bill drawn by
the California producers to
be introduced in Congress
early in the session by Con
gressman B. F. Sisk, repre
sentative from the California
twelfth district. It was voted
to name a committee to meet
with the California operators
as soon as arrangements can
be made, either in Sacramento
or Medford, to try to arrive
at more mutual objectives.
Some of the proposed de
tails are not suitable to the
local miners.
The suggested bill is a two
part plan providing for in
centive payments for domes
tic production of chromite ore
of metallurgical grade, asking
$40 per dry ton on the basis
of a minimum of 42 Der cent
chrome iron ration. The ob
jective of this part is to give
the domestic operators a mar
gin differential over foreign
producers.
The second part of the bill
would provide a guaranteed
market for ferro-chrome or
other manufactured alloys" at
world market prices.
The local miners objected
to the setting of the minimum
incentive payment of $40 and
to the opening of the bill to
the extent of including all
types of chrome alloys.
FIRE ROUTS FAMILIES

20 families were driven into
the street Wednesday night
by a two-alarm fire which
burned through the top two
floors of a five-story tenement
house. No one was injured
and there was no estimate of
damage.
