Holiday Visitors Many

Christmas holidays are over
and during that special sea
son many local residents havs
entertained relatives and
friends at their homes, while
others have made trips to
be with their loved onesat
this tune oi tamuy reunions.
". For Mr. and Mrs. Shirel
Cuddy of Trail this Christmas
will long be remembered as
the time that they and their
family made a trip to the
Harry Holt farm at Creswell,
Ore., where they found wait
ing for them a two-month old
baby girl of Korean parent
age, whom they adopted into
their family.
Mrs. Cuddy reports that
the baby, whom they have
named Sherri Beth, is very
sturdy and healthy and al
ready weighs over 10 pounds.
The baby was one of the chil
dren brought over from the
Holt orphanage in Korea. The
Cuddy's have one daughter
of their own, Patricia, 12, and
two other adopted children,
David, 11 and Marilou, 3,
both of Japanese-American
parentage. .
Among residents who took
trips during the holidays were
Mr. and Mrs. Frank iagaide
of Shady Cove, who made a
trio to San Diego to spend
Christmas with their daugh
ter and family, Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Aliller. They also visit
ed with another daughter and
family, Mr. and Mrs. George
Panich of Santa Monica. Mrs.
. Miller is the former Mariorie
Donovan and is well known
in the area.
The Miller's are also the
parents of a new baby girl,
their sixth child. Mrs. Panich
returned to Shady Cove with
the Fagalede's for a visit here.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard
Wheeler and children, Jim
and Diane, of Shady Cove
spent Christmas in Sacra
mento, where they visited
with Mrs. Wheeler' mother,
Mrs. Flarence Morris, and her
sister and husband, Mr. and

Shady Cove made a trip to
Bellevue, Wash., where she
visited with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Hoyes and friends
and other relatives.

The Elk-Trail PTA will
hold a regular meeting with
a potluck dinner on Friday
evening, Jan. 9. The curtains
for the school stage have now
been purchased. This was the
PTA project for the year.

the area is the marriage of
Mrs. Josephine Morgan Ver
don to Mr. Warren E. Wood,
which took place in Ashland
on Dec. 13.
Miss Gail Wunderlich of
Shady Cove was attendant to
the bride and Mrs. Ben Torez
of Burman, now employed by
the Bureau of Public Roads,
was attendant to the groom.
Following the ceremony a
wedding supper was held at
the Tally He restaurant in
Talent. They are now at home
in Shady Cove, where Mrs.
Wood is continuing to oper
ate the Shop Cove Washateria
and Wood is employed by the
Bureau of Public Roads.
They spent Christmas with
Mrs. Wood's cousins, Mr. and
Mrs. William Whipple at the
Rogue River ranch in Rogue
River. Ore. Wood also visited
with his granddaughter, Mrs.
Fred York, and her baby son,

Adrian Elrod was very ill
in a Chicago hospital, having
been hopitalized for eight days
there. His father, Everett El
rod, flew black to Chicago
and brought Adrian home by
plane, with the two of them
arriving to surprise Mrs. El
rod and MaryAnh on Christ
mas day. -
Adrian is much improved
now and convalescing at
home.- He expects to return
to Chicago about-the first of
February to complete the re
mainder of his school term.
About six weeks more of
training will enable him to
graduate. '
Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Sackett
and son, Kerry, of Grants Pass
were visitors in Shady Cove
Monday, stopping to see Mr.
and Mrs. Carroll Watson in
Shady Cove, Mr. and Mrs.
Bob Work and family in Trail
and visiting with other friends
in the area.
Ernie is teaching one of
the fourth grades this year
at the Redwood school on the
Redwood highway just out of
Grants Pass. The school, while
on the highway to Crescent
City and just outside of
Grants Pass, is still part of
the Grants Pass school sys
tem. He has 23 pupils. He
formerly taught the fifth
grade at the Elk-Trail school.
Mr. and Mrs. Mike Lom
bard of Pasadena, Calif., were
guests of Mr. and Mrs. Nick
Hohn of Trail during the
Christmas holidays. Mr. and
Mrs. Lombard were former
residents of Shady Cove, hav
ing owned one of Mrs. Mann's

Science Turns Up Possibility
Of Making Mushrooms Cheap

the possibility of putting
mushrooms into every pot by
making those delicious but
expensive fungi one of the
cheap foods. The promise is
based on the discovery that
they can be made to grow
abundantly in sawdust.
They're now usually grown

and more expensive. Whereas
there's an increasing shortage
of manure, there's an endless
supply of sawdust.
The woody waste of Amer
ican industry is estimated to
total about 53 million tons
annually. This includes-bark,
sugar cane pulp, rice, hulls
and straw, in addition to saw
dust. Any sizable part of this
gigantic waste, put to mush
room production, would help
turn out mushrooms in fan
tastic tonnages.

Indeed, three scientists of
the University of Florida, in
their small-scale pilot culti
vations, got higher yields with
less work from sawdust than
the most skilled professional
cultivators usually get from
manure.
Mushroom fanciers ignore
the ways-of-life of the mush
room if they know what they
are because from the human
viewpoint, those ways are not
aesthetic. On the other hand,
mushrooms are nutritionally
wonderful. They are rich in
protein and the B vitamins.
But they thrive on rot.
The Florida scientists, Sey-
mour S. Block, George Tsao
and Lunghwa Han, showed
that chemically the mushroom
is cleverer than the cleverest
chemist. Manures rot on their
own, releasing their chemical
constituents. Woody wastes
rot, but there is no release of
chemical constituents and the
chemists are unable to get
them out by commercially
practicable technique.
Must Start Process
But mushrooms can extract
the constituents and use them
for their own growth. The
scientists found, however,
that agaricus campestria,
which is the mushroom most
people mean when they use
the word (since it is the com
mon commercial mushroom),

otus ostreatus, the scientists
grew readily in sterile saw
dust fortified with oatmeal
and got their first crop in two
weeks. This mushroom be
longs to the "woodrotting"
group which start the rotting
process from scratch for the
purpose of propagating them
selves. P. ostreatus is a tasty
if strong-flavored mushroom
prized by chefs as an ingre
dient for soups, sauces and
gravies.
Reporting their experiments
to a technical organ of the
American Chemical Society,
the scientists lauded the gus
tatory and nutritional excel
lences of mushrooms and
pointed out that with sawdust
they could be "factory-produced"

Actress Reported
In Good Condition
New York (UPD Actress
Inger Stevens was reported
in fair condition today after
apparently having swallowed
a caustic solution in her Man
hattan apartment.
The 24 -year -old blonde,
Swedish-born actress was
rushed to Columbus hospital
in critical condition Sunday
night. Doctors at first said she
had only a 50-50 chance to
live, but later reported she
was making good progress.
A spokesman at the hospital
said Miss Stevens was believ
ed to have swallowed a caus
tic solution - "possibly clean
ing fluid." Tests were to be
conducted today to determine
the type of solution.
