Asked how such a small
group of rebels could have
successfully fought the Cu
ban arrrly, Batista explained
to newsmen Thursday:
Their (the rebels) first op
ponents were soldiers of the
i rural guard who were not
prepared for guerrilla war
fare. Well Armed
"When the rebels expand
ed their operations and met
the army in open battle they
were well armed and their
weapons were superior to
ours."
Batista said to have contin
ued the civil war would have
meant "great sacrifices and
enormous losses of lives, and
I chose to put an end to this
situation, resigning the gov
ernment." Asked about the future of
Cuba Batista said, "I am no
prophet, but the situation is
very confused." He said fi
nally now that he had left the
country he hopes "peace and
harmony will reign in Cuba
among the Cubans."
Batista said he was satis
fied "that I conducted a good
government for Cuba," and
. said it reached a peak of pros
perity and well being during
his administration.

state now in exile in the Do
minican Republic. Former

Ciudad Trujillo.

Drivers Licenses
Suspended Listed
Salem -The department of
motor vehicles has released
names of 253 drivers whose
licenses were ordered susond-
ed during the period begin
ning Dec. 22, and ending
Dec. 26.
Length of suspension varies,
depending on charges involv
ed, recommendation of court,
" discretionary action by the
department or requirements
. of Oregon law. The depart
ment said some of the licenses
involving financial responsi
bility and court recommen
dations may have been re
Instated after suspension was
ordered.
The department warned
drivers that the penalty for
driving while suspended is a
jail sentence of no less than
two daya and up to six
months, and there may be im
posed a fine up to $500. Un
der licensing procedures, this
will also result in an addi
tional year of suspension.

on the heels of a rebel push
that ousted President Fulgen
cio Batista. Their arrival has
touched off a number of un
friendly demonstrations.
Many of the refugees ap
peared frightened and con
fused. Some barely escaped
with the clothes on their
backs.
Fulgencio Ruben Batista,
son of the exiled Cuban pres
ident, was among the refu
gees who arrived in Florida
and Louisiana Thursday along
with his two small children
and two of his sisters. Two
of the elder Batista's children
were on a plane that landed
in new uneans.
U. S. immigration officers
granted temporary visas to
the evacuees and they scat
tered about the country.
Whereabouts Unknown
Ruben Batista and several
associates were reported to
have chartered a plane after
passing through customs at
Jacksonville .and flown to
New Orleans. The party could
net be located.

Board Members Elected

Applegate Valley-Two new
members were elected to the
board of deacons at the Ruch
Community church at the an
nual business meeting held in
December, according to pas
tor, the Rev. Earl Best.
. M. D. Reed and Donald
Main were elected to serve
with William Green, Glenn
Hunter, and Rex Davis. The
church recently became an
official Oregon corporation,
meeting with all the require
ments of the state Corpora
tion Commission, the Rev.
Best stated. There were 25
names taken for charter mem
bers and the charter will re
main open until an. 25.
The church is purchasing
the Port residence as a par
sonage. Attendance this fall
has reached over 100 persons.
The present buildings has
been7 in use almost a year and
the church group was organ
ized in March, 1956.
Wednesday night, Dec. 31,
the church was the meeting
place of the Multnomah school
of Bible alumni students. A
faculty member of the school
was scheduled to speak, and
prospective students from
southern Oregon were invited
to the meeting. Several mem
bers participated in baptismal
services at the Baptist church
in Medford Sunday.
Mrs. Flossy Garner spent
Christmas in Gold Hill and
vicinity as a guest of Mrs.
Fred Jones and Mr. and Mrs.
William Wright. Mrs. Garner,
formerly Flossy Myers, taught
at Sardine Creek in 1937, and
enjoyed visiting former pupils
and their families.
Mr. and Mrs. William Robey
has not purchased the De
Shazo ranch property as was
previously stated in this col
umn, but has merely acquired
the option to buy.
The actual sale of the prop
ery, owned by Mrs. Ivie Lena
De Shazo, cannot be negoti
ated until certain legal details
are cleared, Robey said.
Dean Saltmarsh of Medford
was here Monday looking
after his trapping business.
He set a string of traps, ex
pecting to catch coyotes and
wild cats.

In all the cities, police
moved in to protect the tired
and obviously frightened ref
ugees. American Latins were
predominant in the mobs that
shouted pro-rebel slogans and
denounced Batista's followers
as "murderers."
The pilot of a Cuban Air
lines plane which arrived in
New York Thursday said flee
ing passengers forced him to
take off at pistol point. The
plane carried about 40 gov
ernment officials and sympa
thizers among the 86 persons
aboard. The pro-Batista pas
sengers were let out of side
doors at the airport to avoid
clashes with 300 pro-rebel
demonstrators who had gath
ered outside.

ternoon, vandals were pillag
ing and looting in downtown
Havana, and Ray Ziesse, a
United Press Movietone cam
eraman, and I took a cab to
make the rounds and see what
pictures we could get.
A few blocks from our ho
tel we saw a mob of possibly
200 gathered in a narrow side
street off The Prado, Havana's
major thoroughfare.
We stopped the cab driver
and walked 100 yards down
the side street. Part of the
mob was breaking into a store
protected by shutters. They
were using heavy wooden
sticks and heavy metal shafts
from parking meters uproot
ed from the sidewalks.
Start Screaming
I started to shoot with the
Rolliflex (a still camera) and
Ray was shooting movies.
Suddenly one member of the
mob started screaming, "No
pictures," he ran at us.
He grabbed my camera and
smashed it to the ground. He
was tall and slim and had a
mustache. He seemed semi-
hysterical.
About a dozen people gath
ered around, and I started
backing off toward The Prado.
Ray was beside me. I didn't
care too much ' about losing
the film as long as Ray could
get away with the movies he
had shot.
But the man who had seized
my camera turned on Ray. He
knocked the heavy movie
camera to the ground. I kept
shouting, "We're Americans."
But it did not good. He picked
up Ray's camera and dropped
it again, smashing it a second
time.
By now we just wanted to
set out. We didn't dare turn
our backs, so we started walk
ing backward, facing our as
sailants. They glared, and one
man shouted, but we reached
The Prado and reported back
to the office.
Later in the afternoon when
I resumed a tour of the city-
without my comera - I saw
police coming up the street,
and the mob scattered.

Three Escape from
Salem Institutions
Salem (UPD State police
Thursday reported the escape
of two inmates from the Ore
gon State Penitentiary annex
here.
They are John Howard Gil
bert; 28, St. Helens, who was
serving five years for larceny,
and Keith W. Wilkins, 21,
Sandy,1 serving two years for
obtaining money under false
pretenses.
Police said the men walked
away from their jobs at the
prison annex where they were
working on a farming project.
Salem (UPD State Hospital
inmate Carl Wagner, 21,
escaped from the institution
about 5:30 p.m. Thursday, po
lice reported.
' Carl is the twin brother of
Richard Wagner, who was re
admitted to the hospital after
police connected him with the
Signal Fireworks warehouse
explosion in Portland last
July 5. r
It was first believed that
Richard had escaped, but later
reports confirmed the identity
of Carl.
Police said he was wearing
a red flannel shirt and blue
jeans when he broke away.
Hospital authorities said Carl
was admitted to the hospital
after he was connected with a
school-room fire.
