Bears Go Into Rose Bowl
Showing Quiet Confidence

heavily favored Hawkeyes,
led by Ail-American quarter
back Randy Duncan, take the
field against thrice-beaten Cal
ifornia today in the 45th re
newal of the Rose Bowl game.
The Big Ten champions,
making their second appear
ance here in three years,
have been installed as 18Vi
point favorites.
A crowd of more than 100,
000 will see the game, as will
many thousands more orf tele
vision. The forecast is for
"clear and sunny" with the
temperature in the 70s.
Big Ten oficials rate this
Iowa team as one of the
strongest to come out of the
midwest in post-war years.
California, on the other hand,
lost three games and barely
squeaked by on several others.
Iowa Lauded
""This Jowa team Is one of
the best to come out of the
Big Ten in the past dozen
years," said Fritz Crisler, ath
letic director at University of
Michigan. "I would say it was
equal to or better than the
1948 Michigan Rose Bowl
team, which trounced South
ern California, 49-0."
While the Midwesterners
claim power, it is possible that
they may be under-estimating
the strength of the California
team.
"We have a good club," said
coach Pete Elliott. "Maybe
not the best In the world. But
it has a lot of spirit and it gets
the job done. We have quiet
confidence. We are not on a
crusade."
Some people believe that
the Bears should be on a cru
sade. The Big Ten has won 11
of the 12 games since the pact
was signed with the Pacific
Coast Conference.
The Iowa men to watch in
the game are Duncan and his
pass catchers: ends Jeff Lang
ston and Don Norton; and
halfbacks Willie Fleming, Ke
vin Furlong and Bob Jeter.
For California, the major
threat is quarterback Joe

and passing. He was fifth in
the nation in total offense.

Bean Outweighed
The major problem for Cal
ifornia will be to move the big
Iowa line. It is probable that
coach Forest Evashevski will
field a team with a forward
wall that will weigh in the
neighborhood of 220 pounds.
Against this the California
line will average only 191
pounds.
"They are going to out
weigh us badly up front," El
liott pointed out. "But maybe
we can make up for the dif
ference with speed." The Cal
ifornia backfield will weigh
189 pounds to the man, com
pared with 185 for the Hawk
eyes. California goes into the
game with a 7-3 record for the
season (6-1 in conference j
play); and Iowa is 7-1-1 (5-1 in
conference play).

The Pels will be hosts to
Grants Pass on Friday and
will contend at Medford on
Saturday night. In the other
week end battles Crater will
take on Ashland at Central
Point on Friday and will
travel over to Grants Pass on
Saturday.
With an uneven number of
teams in the circuit Medford
will be idle on Friday night
with a bye and Ashland will
sit out on Saturday.
Beat Common Foes
Medford, Grants Pass and
Klamath each have pre-con-ference
triumphs over two
common foes. The Tornado
whipped Marshfield 64 to 48
and North Bend 56 to 44. GP
scored 50 to 37 and 75 to 47
over those respective rivals.
Klamath Falls had a tougher
time with each of the two
coast schools, needing two
overtimes to nip Marshfield
74 to 72 and topping North
Bend 48 to 47.
Showing the best record as
loop play starts is Medford
with five victories and no
losses, including one win over
South Eugene and two over
Corvallis. Klamath, with a
pair of decisions over Spring
field is unmarred in four
games. Grants Pass has split
with Roseburg, won from
Weed and lost to Yreka and
has a 4-2 : season standing.
Crater split with Eagle Point,
fell once to Coquille and twice
to Roseburg. Ashland against
Crater will be looking for its
first victory- It has bowed
twice each to Shasta of Red
ding and Tillamook and once
apiece to Eureka and Fortuna.
Rasmussen Ails
Coach Frank Roelandt has
reported that, with tha ex
ception of Pete Rasmussen.
his squad should be intact for
the Klamath fracas on Satur
day. Rasmussen Suffered a
strained back in practice yes
terday and was hospitalized.
Lowell Dean is getting over
a similar back ailment which
forced him out of the Corval
lis series last week. The Tor
nado squad, however, has
been bolstered by the return
of Don Peek, who was side-
lined by an appendectomy
during his first week of practice.
Reports from Klamath in
dicate that Coach Dean White
will start the same line-un
against Grants Pass and Med
ford that he did against the
two Oregon coast clubs. This
would have Jim Hall and Bob
Lewis at forwards, Bob Peter
sen at center and twins Don
and Dave DeLap at guards.
Petersen was a second team
all-stater last season and is1
the only returnee from the
Pelican Big Four which car
ried the. team to the state
crown.
