Back Stairs: President Withdrawing?

stairs at the White House:
Possibly because President
Eisenhower has held only two
press conferences in the last
two months the chief execu
tive recently has been the sub
ject of some critical studies,
printed and broadcast, pitch
ed on the idea that he is with
drawing from the reporters.
The burden of several re
cent widely distributed crit
iques has been that Eisenhow
er has just about zero person
al relations with reporters in
contrast to the two charmers
who preceded him, the late
President Roosevelt and for
mer President Truman.
To a degree, this is true.
But often the critic of Eisen
hower's press relations forgets
one simple truth:
The outside or so-called per
sonal relationship between
the President and the news
men is just about what it is
with virtually all members of
his staff, his administration
and the Congress.
Sense of Orderliness
Dwight David Eisenhower,
after his many years in the
relative formality of military
life has an unusually pressing
sense of orderliness, a form of
emotional compartmentation.

This looks like a free-scor
ing game and I'd be a bit cau
tious about giving away 17
points. The game matches two
of the nation's top quarter
backs in Iowa's Randy Dun
can and Cal's Joe Kapp.
" Iowa has two big. fast lines
and a fleet all-around attack
which puts the accent on of
fense. California isn't too deep
and, while Iowa's pass de
fense isn't the greatest, neither
are Cal's receivers. Iowa fig
ures to grind 'em down but
the hospitality kills the visit
ors and it could be close.
Sugar Bowl
LSU is a 14-point favorite
despite the fact that it is giv
ing away a lot of beef in the
line. Sparked by Billy Can
non, it has breath-taking speed
and can score from any place
on the field.
Clemson has a weight ad
vantage. However, this is a
slow team with a mediocre
attack. I' can hammer out
touchdowns but doesn't figure
to match LSU's gifted produc
tion.
Cotton Bowl
TCU is an eight-point fa
vorite but from here this is
the blue-plate special.
It may be sending a bunch
of boys on a man's errand,
yet this team d-i-d tie mighty
Iowa, 13-13, early in the year.
The way it looks from here,
the small, jet-powered Fal
cons simply ran out of gas
along the way through an un
beaten schedule and just made
it. But they have had time to
rest for this one.
TCU has a big bulge in size
but lost to Iowa, 17-0. As a
word of caution, they played
a more rugged schedule than
the Academy.
Orange Bowl
This, with Oklahoma a 14V&
point favorite, will be a grind-it-out
affair of little deception.
The Orange is big, rugged
and, despite Oklahoma's repu
tation, if Chuck Zimmerman
can hit with an occasional pass
at the right moment, Syracuse
could win a close one. Okla
homa has a good defense and
one of those old machine-like
attacks. Yet, Syracuse has the
heft to halt 'em.

He seems to observe a very I
sharp dividing line between
business and his private per
sonal life.
Reporters are justified when
they deplore the chief execu
tive's lack of personal, after-
hours or social contact with
them. It is true their stories
would be much more interest
ing, more revealing 1 if they
could see more, if any, of the
nation's No. 1 citizen off duty.
But he just isn't that kind
of a fellow. His circle of
friends is quite small when it
comes to people who golf, fish
and play bridge with him. Not
even Sherman Adams, who
had the reputation of being
the closest person in the en
tire administration to Eisen
hower, was on a golf or let's-have-lunch-together
basis
with the President.
Such people as Adams, be
fore his unhappy departure
from the White House, and
Jim Hagerty .- even Vice
President Richard M. Nixon -play
golf with the President
rarely, and then only by invi
tation. They dine with him
seldom unless the occasion is
business, a dinner or recep
tion on the White House social
season list of formal parties.
Dinner With Nixons
The night before Christmas,
the President and his wife
went to the Nixon's home for
dinner. It was the first time
the Eisenhowers had been in
side the house.
This doesn't mean for a
minute that Eisenhower dis
likes the people with whom
he carries on his official af
fairs. But when he's away
from his job, he likes to be
really away. He quite ob
viously sees nothing incumb
ent on a president to hobnob
with an associate in govern
ment purely because it might
look like the thing to do.
Possibly the major excep
tion to this pattern of the
President was and is his close
personal friendship with for
mer Treasury Secretary
George M. Humphrey. He still
visits in Humphreys' Thomas
ville, Ga., winter home and
goes duck shooting on occas
ion with the former cabinet
officer at a private club out
side Toledo, Ohio.

Rivers Flooding

Heavy rain continued to
soak the Carolinas and Vir
ginia today sending the New
river over its banks, and
bringing the threat of minor
floods along other rivers.
Weather forecasters said the
New river was expected to
climb about three feet above
flood stage at Galax, Va. They
said the rain would probably
end later today but predicted
possible further flooding at
the Roanoke, Tar, Neuse and
Cape Fear river basins.
In the nation's midsection,
an invasion of cold air was
expected to chase a spell of
springlike weather that saw
the mercury climb to a rec
ord 51 degrees in Chicago
Sunday. The previous high of
50 for the date was set in
1889.
An Arctic air mass pushed
into the . nation's north cen
tral section Sunday and surg
ed southward through the Da-
kotas into Nebraska. Tempera
tures tumbled an average of
20 degrees under the influ
ence of the cold air, plunging
to near zero early today in
North Dakota and to the 20s
in Nebraska.
