Kefauver (D-Tenn.), the vic
tim of a borrowed Christinas
present, gamely celebrated
the remainder of the Yuletide
week end Saturday from a
hospital bed.
The senator took a gay but
disastrous ride in a young
neighbor s new, flashy, soap
box racer. The result: Several

is expected to rule this week
on its review of the convic
tion of a Camp Pendleton Ma
rine who declined to carry a
rifle in service, the Marine
Corps said yesterday.
A Corps spokesman said the
case, involving Pvt. Peter H.
Green, is now before the
Navy's judge advocate gen
eral here for review.
Green was tried by a gen
eral court martial at the Ma
rine Air Station, El Toro,
Calif., last May and convicted
of unauthorized absence from
duty, wrongful possession of
a liberty pass, 'malicious pub
lication' of a statement about
the Marine Corps, and disre
spect toward an officer.
The court sentenced him to
two years, confinement, forfei
ture of all pay and allowances
for two years and a bad con
duct discharge.
Last Aug. 11, a review of
the case resulted in reduction
of the sentence to one year's
confinement and forfeiture of
pay and allowances for one
year, but the bad conduct dis
charge was not changed.
At his trial. Green insisted
that he should not have to
bear arms on grounds of con
scientious objections, a Marine
spokesman said. -
The case was reviewed
further by the Navy judge
advocate general in San Fran
cisco before being forwarded
to Washington.

David has a home-made soap
box racer. He always consid
ered that it was a pretty fine
pice of equipment.
Eyes Bug Out
But Christmas Day he saw
something that made his eyes
bug out. His school chum and
neighbor, John Harrell, drove
up in a shiny factory-made
model that had turned up un
der the Harrell Christmas
tree.
After a few trial heats, Da
vid went home and announc
ed he wanted to trade in his
old heap for a new one. The
senator said he wanted to see
John's car before any deci
sion was reached.
Then Kefauver decided to
give John's racer a trial run
himself.
Kefauver folded his 6-foot
3-inch frame into the little
racer and shoved off with a
laugh down a hill near his
house in northwest Washing
ton. Senator's Grin Disappears
The racer picked up speed
. the senator grinned. The
racer picked up more speed
. . . the senator continued to
grin. The racer picked up
more speed . . . the senator
smiling reached for the brake.
He couldn't find it. He stop
ped grinning. And he stuck'
out a foot.
The racer slowed, but the
senatorial foot bent under it.
The racer swerved and turned
over.
Kefauver went back to his
Christmas tree feeling a lit
tle shaken but otherwise all
right. However, this morning
his leg pained him. He check
ed in at Bethesda hospital.
The doctors put his leg in a
cast and put him to bed until
Sunday. They also told him
he would have to keep the
cast on three weeks.
The spokesman said Kefau
ver was in good spirits. But
there's bad news for David:
Nix on that racer.
