ation, says that now some four
million Ameri
cans have paid
from $125 to
$200 a pair for
contact lenses.
Some 80 per
cent of these
people are
wearing these
glasses, main
ly for appear
ance's sake;
others are wearing them be
cause of the requirements of
their work, perhaps on the
stage, on TV, in basketball, or
in swimming.
Many of the contact lenses
today are made of a plastic so
that they are tiny and shatter
proof, besides beng invisible.
They tend to give the person
better vision than he can get
with spectacles. Persons who
suffer from strong daylight,
now can wear contact lenses
that are tinted. Actresses can
change the color of their eyes
to go with changes in the
color of their hair.
Some Can't Be Bothered
Naturally, there are many
persons who can't or won't
get used to contact lenses,
just as there are some who
just won't get used to bi-fo-cals.
Some persons can't be
bothered to go through the
period of annoyance and ad
justment that is necessary.
With contact lenses there is a
period of three to five weeks,
a so-called "break-in" period,
in which the person decides
whether or not he wants to
continue the struggle. The
writer says that somewhere
up to 50 per cent of people
can't tolerate any foreign
body in their eyes. He thinks,
however, that if they would
stick it out long enough, they
eventually would become ac
customed to wearing the
lenses. The tiny glasses of to
day are immensely more com
fortable to wear than were
the old ones that were first
made. In the old days people
could wear contact lenses for
only a few hours at a time;
now some can wear them all
day.
The person who buys con
tact lenses spends about eight
hours with the specialist who
fits him, and trains him, and
helps him to adjust to them.
The persons must learn exact
ly how to clean the lenses, in-

Some Carry Mirror
For a while the person has
to carry a magnifying mirror
to help him to find the little
lens when, at first, perhaps
two or three times a day, it
plays hide-and-seek on his eye
ball or on his eye-lashes. By
the end of the first month, the
specialist should know wheth
er his patient is going to wear
the lenses all day or whether
for some reason or other, he
isn't going to wear them at all.
When wet, the little lenses
stick to a finger, enabling the
person to place them in his
eyes without a suction cup.
4-H Club News
Antelope 4-H Club
One of the community pro
jects of the Antelope Live
stock club is a Christmas food
basket for a needy family.
Each member brought some
food to put in the basket, at
the meeting held. Dec. 18 at
the Antelope school house.
The club decided to buy a
turkey and some flour to
make the basket more com
plete. Twenty-one goals for the
coming year were discussed
and approved. Some of them
are do a community service,
invite another club to a meet
ing, put a display in a store
window, and enter a demon
stration in the county fair.
Wedding gifts were given
to Mr. and Mrs. Dave Wool
folks and Mr. and Mrs. Dale
Bigham. ,
The next meeting will be
Jan. 8 at the Antelope school
house. .
After the meeting a white
elephant gift exchange was
held and refreshments were
served. ,

The G. E. Stitchers met on
Saturday, Dec. 20, at Edge
oaks dairy with all members
present but two who' were ill.
A business meeting was called
at 10:30 followed by a Christ
mas party and exchange of
gifts and treats. '. .
Our leaders, Mrs. Edge and
Mrs. Gardner, presented us
with the 4-H flag and Ameri
can flag as our Christmas gift
and as a reward for our 100
per cent cooperation in finish
ing and exhibiting all projects
last year.
Christmas carols were sung
by the members accompanied
by Vonnie Lee and Bonnie
Lee Goehring on their accor
dions and led by Joyce Moore.
Arlene Moore led the games.
Gayle and Debbie Norris at
tended for the last time as
they are moving to Medford.
Bonnie Lee resigned her office
as reporter to fill the vacancy
of secretary which was held
by Gayle. Janet Burk was
unanimously elected reporter.
The parents joined us at
6:30 for potluck supper. The
evening was spent singing and
playing games. Those attend
ing were Mr. and Mrs. C. J.
Kelly and daughter, Mrs. W.
D. Young and daughter, Mr.
and Mrs. Elbert Hefly and
three children, Mr. and Mrs.
Ben Gardener and son, Mr.
and Mrs. Everett Moore and

Barnum Named To
Manager's Post
William S. Barnum, son of
Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Barnum,
3976 South Pacific highway,
has been appointed assistant
manager of sheet and strip
sales at Kaiser Steel corpora
tion's general sales office in
Oakland, Calif., according to
C. L. Emerson, general sales
manager.
Barnum's appointment to
the newly-created position re
flects the increased emphasis
sheet and strip sales will re
ceive as the result of Kaiser
Steel's current $214,000,000
expansion program, Emerson
reported.
Barnum has been with the
sales department since 1951,
most recently as a sales repre
sentative at the company's
southern district sales office
in Los Angeles.
He is a graduate of Med
ford High school and the Uni
versity of Oregon and re
ceived a master's degree from
Harvard Business school. Mr.
and Mrs. Barnum and two
children will move to the Bay
area in January.
Family Housed In
Shelter Overnight
A family of four, including
two small girls aged 2 and 4
years, were housed in the Sal
vation Army shelter Friday
afternoon after Medford po
lice found them drenched and
hitchhiking in the rain on
North Riverside ave.
The parents told officers
that they were traveling from
Parker, Ariz., to Portland.
Salvation Army personnel
clothed and fed the family
and housed them overnight.
They continued on their way
Saturday morning.
