FBI Reports Opening on List
Of 'Ten Most Wanted' Persons
Washington - (UPD - The FBI
had an opening yesterday on
its list of the nations ten
most wanted" fugitives be
cause one of the underworld's
"elite" couldn't stay out of
new trouble.
The vacancy occurred with
the capture in 1 Cajon, Calif.,
of Daniel William O'Connor,
: 30-year-old athletic bad guy
who evaded the long arm of
the law since 1953 by radi
cally changing his appearance.
O'Connor, who the FBI said
once "mercilessly" beat a
Canadian Mounted Police
officer, had been working for
several years in El Cajon as
a handy man. He dyed his
hair red, grew a full mustache
and added 58 pounds to his
already stocky 200 pounds.
"Arthur Nelson"
He adopted the name "Ar
thur Nelson" and was mar
ried with two children.
O'Connor was unmasked
after the El Cajon police de
partment arrested him on a
San Diego, Calif., police de
partment warrant charging
him with theft of a trailer.
Although he identified him
self as Nelson, O'Connor's fin
gerprints gave him away when
studied by San Diego police
and the FBI. He finally ad
mitted his true identity.
The stocky one-time wrest
ler was put on the FBI ten
most wanted list April 11,
1955.
Smith Appointed
To Indonesian Post

theft in 1948 at Windsor, Ont.
Previously, on May 6, 1946,
O'Connor deserted from the
United States Army while sta
tioned at Ft. Campbell, Ky.,
the bureau said.
Tne FBI said O'Connor cut
a swath across Montana,
North Dakota and Oregon by
victimizing merchants with
fraudulent money order's to
set the federals hard on his
trail.
The athletic O'Connor, an
accomplished swimming i n-
structor - life guard whose
hobby is high diving, was to
be arraigned before the U. S.
commissioner at San Diego.
Boy Tossed
From Car Dies
Portland-(UPD-A four-month
old boy died in St. Vincent
hospital Friday evening after
being thrown from a car and
pinned underneath it.
Dead was Dale E. Falken
berg, son of Mrs. Marie Falk
enberg, Portland.
The accident occurred about
4 p.m. at Harbor Drive and
SW Oak street.
The child was tossed from
a car driven by Mary Jean
Klages, 32, Portland, when a
car driven by Frederick W.
Hayes, Klamath Falls, struck
the Klages' car. The mother
of the child was also thrown
from the car.
The child died about two
hours after the accident occurred.

Merchant Prince
Dies in Boise
Boise, Idaho-(DPD-Columbus
Charles Anderson, who was
born in a log cabin and rose
in true Horatio Alger fashion
to the eminence of a mer
chant prince of the West, died
here yesterday. He was 85.
Anderson founded the C. C.
Anderson Store in Boise and
developed it into a chain of
221 stores in Idaho, Utah, Col
orado, Oregon and Washing
ton. He was born in Osceola,
Mo., Nov. 2, 1873, and got his
start in the retail business at
the age of 23 as a clerk in the
Golden Rule Store at Boulder
City, Colo. A fellow clerk
was J. C. Penney.

Holiday traffic casually de
toured around what appeared
to be a small "bundle" in the
middle of the road Friday un
til an inquisitive motorist dis
covered the object was a 5-year-old
boy.
Mrs. Ruth McCloud told po
lice Kelvin Smith, son of
Ronald Smith, a missile scien
tist, was unconscious when
she discovered him.
Police said the boy had top
pled from a 35-foot embank
ment onto the road while
walking near his home.
Kelvin was taken to Santa
Monica hospital with a possi
ble fractured skull.

Neuberger Tells
Of Proposed Funds
For Willamette
Portland -(UPD- Sen. Richard
L. Neuberger (D. -Ore.) said
yesterday he has had legisla
tion drafted which would
authorize more than 51 mil
lion dollars for construction
and modification of flood con
trol projects in the Willam
ette river basin.
Neuberger said he intends
to introduce the measure, in
cluding recommendations of
the Corps of Engineers made
in the controversial "308" re
port, early in the 86th Congress.
Included in the proposed
legislation is construction of a
new storage reservoir at Cas-
cadia on the South Santiam
river at cost of $28,270,000
and at Gate Creek costing
$15,920,000.
The Fern Ridge reservoir
in the Long Tom river would
be. modified to provide 15,000
acre-feet of flood control stor
age at a cost of $140,000.
The bill also includes auth
orization for construction of a
re-regulating dam and reser
voir at the Strube site on the
south fork of the McKenzie
river, which would cost $6,-685,000.
Sen. Neuberger said the
North Pacific Division office
of the Corps of Engineers has
described the projects as "eco
nomically justified."

As is usual In a holiday
week the volume fell off.
Daily average sales for the
three sessions amounted to
only 2,981,193 shares. In the
previous week trading aver
aged 3,731,286 shares daily.
The past week's average was
the smallest since the week
ended Sept. 5.
Woman Faces Trial
For Fatal Stabbing

fatal stabbing of 49-year-old
Wilbur Ernest (Swede) Dick

Her husband, Virgil, 50, is
now serving a 20-year sen
tence in Idaho State Peniten
tiary for the stabbing.
Mrs. Sharp was released on
$2500 bond. She was bound
over to the district court Fri
day for trial by Justice of the
Peace Calia Settle, who, had
taken the matter under ad
visement following a prelim
inary hearing held two weeks
ago.
The stabbing incident oc
curred during a Fruitland
tavern brawl. According to
the police, Mrs. Sharp was
present during the fracas.

Bus Passengers
Escape Injury
Madras-(UPD-An automobile
bus collission on Highway 26
about 12 miles west of here
Friday night hospitalized the
driver of the car but the 15
passengers on the bus were
unhurt.
An eyewitness to the acci
dent said the car had entered
the highway near a bridge on
the Deschutes river and ram
med the bus broadside.
The collision knocked the
bus from the highway down a
15-foot bank and it came to
rest near the river still up
right. - John Sampson, Toppenish,
Wash., was the driver of the
car. He was taken to a hos
pital in Prineville with severe
scalp lacerations.
Hospital attendants describ
ed his condition as "fair."

The heavy flow of traffic
was caused by the exchanging
