Visits Medford Parents
The South-East Asia Treaty
Organization known as
SEATO, is accomplishing its
purpose and is operating ef
ficiently in the opinion of
Captan Richard S. Roberts.
Captain Roberts, who has for
the past two years represent
ed the United States Navy on
the SEATO Representatives'
Council in Bangkok, left for
Texas Christmas night after
spending several days" here
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
David D. Roberts, 32 Rose
avenue.
SEATO, an organization
comparable to the better
known North Atlantic Treaty
Orgaization, was formed in
1954 with the signing of the
Manila pact. Signatory na
tions are Pakistan, Thailand,
the Philippines, Australia,
New Zealand, France, Great
Britain and the United States.
Purpose of SEATO . is to
prevent the spread of Com
munism in the Southeast Asia
area, both by military force
or subversion, and the theme
adopted at the signing of the
Manila Pact was "Greater se
curity through greater unity."
The council to which Captain
Roberts was assigned is made
up of military, naval and oth
er representatives of the eight
nations, and has its headquart
ers in Thailand.
In the second annual re
port published by SEATO, it
was said that the organization
has enjoyed a "quiet and
steady devlopment" and that
"SEATO is a bulwark against
aggression in all its forms and
enables the peoples of the
area which it serves to live
their daily life in an atmos
phere of freedom from fear."
With this absence from fear,
the countries have been able
to advance their economic,
social and cultural develop
ment, the report states.
Another report of SEATO
points out that under the
treaty, and its program of
self help and mutual aid "all
member states have registered
significant progress in their

of an emergency. It also said
that progress has been made
in countering communist sub
version although "this re
mains a major threat to the
area."
It is pointed out that the
Manila pact and SEATO in
no way conflict with the Unit
ed Nations and that it is com'
plementary to other security
treaties in the area. Other na
tions may join the pact sub
ject to the agreement of the
nations now members.
Captain Roberts joined his
wife in Texas and the two
will continue from there to
Washington D.C., where he
will be given a new assign

Advises Parents
Not To Worry

ents who worry about making
mistakes in bringing up their
children can take heart from
the advice of a professor of
child development.
"Parents are too scared of
making mistakes," says Byron
Hughes, of the University of
Michigan.
"It's perfectly natural to
make a certain number of mis
takes. If the bulk of family
living is good and happy, you
can relax and quit worrying
about the petty details," he
said.
The father of six children,
Hughes added: "Sometimes
you get so annoyed with your
children, you really feel like
disciplining them. Go ahead."
If you say "no" when your
youngster wants to go to a
show, that should mean that
he doesn't go.
Hughes often meets parents
who ask him, "What should
I do when my child doesn't
show proper respect?" His an
swer "Insist on it."
Parents should recognize
that children are human and
likely to be ornery now and
then, he said. And children
should sense that parents can
be cranky, too.
Hughes added that parents
might aim to be right about
65 per cent of the time, and
forget about their errors. "If
you're not afraid of mistakes,
you'll ease off and make fewer
of them," he said.

into this year's fashion with a
belt, says Alice Kreisel, of
Colony Accessories. Belts
must be "very very wide,"'she
emphasized. "A six-inch belt
is not a rarity now." For softly-draped
belts, . use fabrics
such as suedes, velvets, and
satins. Black still is the top
shade, but brown, navy, grey,
and soft rainbow colors are
suitable. Self bows, pockets
and fringes are used on belts
for daytime. For evening, trim
belts with rhinestones or jew
els, she recommanded.
Ever wonder why fur coats
are so expensive? One reason
is "dropping" or "letting out."
The pelts are lengthened by
cutting them in narrow di
agnonal strips. Then they are
arranged in step fashion. One
or more mink pelts, for ex
ample, may be dropped the
entire length of the garment.
This gives a narrow line to
the skin and fur marking.
Moccasins get a new look
with square toes. Stitching
also , is dropped close to the
sole, giving the moccasin a
plain-tie look. The half-moccasin
shoe also is new. It has
swirled stitching, which be
gins on the outer side as on a
moccasin, but instead of going
around the shoe, the stitching
ends ie. a swirl at the inner

meg, Vi teaspoon salt, and 2
tablespoons sherry, preferably I
a nutty amontillado type, con
tinue cooking, tightly covered,
about 6 minutes, or until peas
are tender. Do not add water.

Johnston, 121 Crater Lake
avenue, were honored Decem
ber 24 on the occasion of their
golden wedding anniversary.
The Johnstons were mar
ried December 24, 1908, in
Medford. Mrs. Johnston is the
former Elma Eads and moved
to the valley with her parents
from Minneapolis, Kansas, in
1901. Mr. Johnston came from
Spokane, Wash., in 1904 and
is a native of Manning, Iowa.
Present for the event Wed
nesday were the children of
the couple. They are Mr. and
Mrs. Charls L. Johnston and
daughters, Cynthia and Chris
tine, Klamath Falls; Mr. and
Mrs. W. S. Johnston, and
Karen and David, Medford;
Russ Johnston, Portland; and
Mrs. Vivian Dunn and daugh
ter, Judith Ann, Pittsburg,
Calif.
Approximately 25 friends
visited during the open house.
Mrs. Johnston wore a blue
silk dress for the occasion and
a white orchid corsage, a gift
from the grandchildren.

Urges Others
To Enter Field

T. Papageorge, associate dean
of Emory University's School
of Medicine, sees a bright fu
ture for women in biochemis
try, r
Salaries range from $3,000
to $10,000 a year, depending
on experience and education.
The opportunities, according
to Dr. Papageorge, are in re
search, industry and educa
tion. She advises any young
woman interested in such a
scientific career to "be sin
cere in the desire to succeed,
industrious and reasonably in
telligent." Thirty years ago, when Dr.
Papageoge started in bio
chemistry, there were rela
tively few women in the field.
She said:
"Men seemed to doubt that
women were willing to devote
their time and energy to sci
ence. In addition, the men ob
jected to women, suspecting
that they were trying to get
by on their femininity. But
the picure has changed con
siderably in recent years."
Dr. Papageorge, once
named Atlanta's "Woman of
the Year in Education," was
the first f ulltime faculty mem
ber of Emory University's
School of Medicine.

Shallow drawers are ideal for
items that lie flat, and deeper
drawers will hold pans, casse
roles, strainers, and lids.
To hold things in place at
an angle for easy reaching,
use plywod space dividers in
deep drawers. Put dividers in
at a slant about a 60 to 65
angle. Slots on the inside of
the drawer sides will hold di
viders in place and allow
them to slip in and out for
cleaning and adjusting. Space
the dividers according to the
items stored.

Four-Step Budget

budget plans bookkeeping
and paperwork have been
reduced to a minimum in a
four-step budget suggested
by the Institute of Life In
surance. List the family's annual
take-home pay, plus any oth
er income that comes in dur
ing the year, such as dividends
and social security checks. Di
vide the total by 52 to ar
rive at the family's weekly
income.
List the family's fixed
obligations for the year, in
cluding rent or mortgage pay
ments, utilities, charitable
contributions, life insurance
and other insurance premi
ums, an estimate of clothing
costs and payments on loans.
Divide by 52.
Decide how much the
family will want for its an
nual emergency fund for
medical bills, household re
pairs and so on. If a goal of
$200 a year is set, it would
take a weekly set aside of $4.
Add the weekly averages
of fixed obligations and the
necessary emergency funds
and subtract the total from
the average of weekly in
come. The remainder is the
sum available each week for
food, allowances, running the
house, and recreation.
To make the plan work,
keep a close watch on ex
penditures at first. Jot down
the smallest sums spent. That
way a family knows where
the money goes and mem
bers can adjust their spend
ing accordingly.
