Gerard J. - I am a widower
in my 40s.' I have no children.
About a year ago I met a
woman of my Wn age who
was separated from her hus
band because of his unfaith
fulness. We were both very lonely
and unhappy at that time, and
we immediately started to
have an affair. We soon
realized that this was no
mere escapade. We were very
much in love and wanted to
get married.
Around this time, Elaine's
teen-age daughter began to
realize what was going on
and she ran off to her grand
mother's home. She says she
won't come back unless her
mother swears that she'll
have nothing more to do with
me. She says if we marry
she'll never look at her moth
er again. I am sure she'll get
over all of this and we should
go ahead with our plans.
Elaine S. I don't know
what came over me to do
something that is so much
against my own ideals and
upbringing, but I blame it all
on my husband for the ter
rible thing he did to me.
I realize that two wrongs
don't make a right and that's
why I don't blame my daugh
ter Linda for running off like
that and hating me. She . is
still a . child and could not
understand how I felt when
my husband treated me like
that. All she knew. was that
her mother. was just as bad
as her father.
. I love Gerard and feel that
we could have been happy to
gether if we had not been so
impulsive. The way I feel
now I don't want anything or
anyone to get in the way of
my doing my duty as a moth
er. I want to make it up to
Linda, even if I .have to sac
rifice my happiness.

conduct was an injustice to
this teen-age girl, but to hand
her a moral whip with which

would be worse than foolish.
Elaine's guilt feelings about
her misconduct go so deep
that she seems to enjoy the
chance to make a "sacrifice"
of her happiness for . her
daughter. She should realize
that in the long run this plan
will do nobody concerned any
good. The momentary (' relief
of Elaine's guilt feelings will
quickly pass, and she will
rather resent her daughter's
having deprived her of hap
piness. Then it will be the
daughter's turn to feel guilty.
It would be as 'nasty a vicious
cycle as we've ever seen.
If Elaine is sincere about
her feeling for Gerard and
not simply using her daugh
ter as an "out" from a rela
tionship she no longer desires,
her path is very simple. She
must tell the whole truth to
her daughter. A teen-age girl
will understand if her mother
explains about her deep hurt
and shows that she recognizes
and regrets her error. Elaine
can explain that she is mow
looking forward to making a
real home for her family -and
that a husband is a vital
ingredient.
If Linda still says - she'll
have nothing to do with her
mother, she should be allowed
to sulk it out. She can't fail
to recognize that . she is in
the wrong unless . she is de
termined to carry that chip
for the rest of her life. In that
case, giving in to her would
neverhelp.
