Plans to Establish
Oceanography
At OSC Announced
Corvallis Plans to estab
lish a new department of
oceanography at Oregon State
college and to expand OSC
ocean research off the Ore
gon coast have been announc
ed by President A. L. Strand
and Dr. John R. Richards,
chancellor of the state system
of higher education.
The new department would
concentrate on graduate stu
dent training and research
It will be organized as the
expanded research program is
developed in coming months.
In the past five years, OSC
has received research grants
totaling more than $75,000
for the first extensive studies
ever made of the tides, inlets,

earned a record $140,526 last
year at part-time and summer
Jobs secured through the col
lege employment and housing
service.
A total of 1,948 men and 488
women students' and wives
registered with the employ
ment service last year, the
annual report shows. Steady
part-time jobs were found for
390 men and 181 wonvin stu
dents and a variety of odd
jobs were provided for other
students whose working hours
were limited.
The report, prepared by
Mrs. Rose Duthie, housing
employment secretary, praised
students for "tremendous am
bition and willingness . to
work." A substantial number
of students worked their way
through the year without ben
efit of family or other aid,
Mrs. Duthie noted.
Some worked as many as
25 to 40 hours a week and
still carried a full class load.
Jobs included clerical, sales,
janitorial, and mechanical
work in campus and city of
fices and businesses; farm,
forestry and yard work; baby
sitting, and house work; wait
ress duties; truck driving; and
summer resort work. "

Most of the $75,000 has
come from the office of naval
research, which recently an
nounced plans for a vast new
10-year national program of
research in waters surround
ing the U.S. OSC is one of
the 10 institutions proposed
by ONR to conduct the studies
and to assist in training
vitally needed oceanograph-
ers. The 10 schools are stra-
tegically located along the
East and West Coasts and the
Gulf of Mexico.
Dr. Wayne V. Burt is in
charge of teaching and re
search programs in oceanog
raphy at the" college.
The 10-year program is aim
ed at providing basic informa
tion about deep ocean areas,
and waters, the coastal shelf
and the ocean floor around
the United States. The Oregon
coast is the fourth longest
of any state and OSC is among
the most favorably located
schools in the country for
ocean research, Dr. Strand
noted.
Expanded Program
"An expanded educational
and research program in the
field of oceanography would
be of great importance to the
college and the economy of
the state," Dr. Strand said.
In addition to the national
heed - for trained oceanogra-
phers, OSC graduate students
in fisheries, geology, natural
resources, meteorology, engin
eering, zoology, and science
education would benefit from
advanced work in oceanogra
phy." .

has direct economic applica
tion to fisheries, engineering,
and geological survey work,"
Strand continued. Findings
would be of value also to
many state agencies, such as
the fish commission and the
state sanitary authority, he
added.
