Skin Grafts That Worked
Well
As I have often pointed out
in this column, there is a tre
mendous need for grafting
skin and other

in need of
help. So far,
the only real
ly successful
results have
been obtained
or. AJyare when grafting
some organ like a kidney
from one alike-twin to anoth
er. Now, I read that Drs. A.
E. Axlerod, B. Fisher, E. Fish
er, Y. Chiung Puh Lee, and
P. Walsh of the University
of Pittsburgh, report that by
feeding rats a diet deficient
in an important substance
called pyridoxine, .the animals
wer& enabled to accept a
skin graft from another of
their species, and to maintain
it in good condition for from
five to six months. This is a
most hopeful discovery, be
cause it indicates that man
can some day break down the
immune resistance of an ani
mal to tissues from another
animal of the same species.

Mayo foundation
what ileitis is. It is a rarely
seen inflammation of the last
foot of the small bowel, where
it runs into the big bowel, or
colon. Ileitis causes the wall
of the bowel to become thick
so that it resembles a bit of
garden hose. The patient often
has some fever, abdominal
pain, diarrhea and some loss
of weight. Usually about the
only treatment that offers
any hope is the surgical re
moval of shorf-circuiting of
the diseased segment of gut.
Unfortunately, in about half
the cases, the patient gets
the disease in another segment
of bowel farther ' up toward
the stomach. What is sad is
that there is as yet no good
medical treatment. None of
the antibiotics seem to stop
the inflammation.
Dr. Alvarez hopes his read
ers will understand that is
would be impossible for him
to answer requests for infor
mation or to attempt to diag

Christmas Miracle
Restores Eyesight
London -(UPD- Some people
may call it coincidence but to
Mrs. Florence May the gift of
sight is the miracle of Christ
mas all over again.
Mrs. May of suburban
Hayes became blind 14 years
ago. Since then she has lived
only with memories of the
face of her husband Frank
who is her age, 62, and of
her married daughter Dor
othy, now 39.
Two operations failed to re
store her sight but- the third
proved successful and Mrs.
May removed her dark glasses
at home, looked in a mirror
and cried happily at what she
saw. "
"Darling," she told her hus
band, "this is the miracle of
Christmas. I've been given the
most wonderful present of
all."
