Show Cause Order Issued Columnist
New York - (DPD-A federal
judge has ordered television
columnist Marie Torre of the
New York Herald ' Tribune
to . show cause Dec. 30 why
she should not begin serving
a 10-day' jail sentence for
contempt of court.
: Judge Sylvester Ryan is
sued the show cause order
Monday as a result of a re
fusal by the U.S. Supreme
Court to review the case.
The show cause order clears
the way for motions on the
part of Miss Torre's attorney
to delay execution of the
sentence.
The columnist was convict
ed of contempt in November,
1957, for refusing to identify
an executive of the Columbia
Broadcasting System whom
she quoted in a conference to
singer Judy Garland-

Tic Douloureux
Many an elderly woman
writes, wondering what she
can do about tic douloureux.
She has tried
several kinds
of "pain - kill
ers" and none
have worked
Then she had
lJ2k teeth out,
which was
very foolish.
Some doctor
should have
kept her from doing this.
What happens to the unhap
py woman (the patient is us
ually a woman past 50) is that
every so often she gets a ser
ies of needle-like jabs, of pain
which nearly drive her crazy.
They occur usually on one
side of her face, and in one
area. They may come if she
talks or eats, or is hit by
a draft. Occasionally, she will
go about wirth a shawl wrap
ped around her face.
The cause of the pain ap
pears to be something wrong
with the ganglion of the fifth
nerve which supplies the face
with pain - perceiving fibers.
Usually the woman should
go right off to an expert neu
rosurgeon who can inject al
cohol into the ganglion of the
affected nerve. If, after
months of relief, the . pain
should come back, the next
thing to do may be to have
an operation on the ganlion
Fortunately, in recent years,
nerve surgeons have found
that just the freeing-up of the
tissues around the - ganglion
will often give relief. Remov
al of the gangloin is not ideal
because it causes a somewhat
distressing loss of sensation
in half of the face; also trouble
with the eye. If dust gets in
to this eye, the person doesn't
feel it, and the first thing
she knows she has a danger
ous conjunctivitis.
Loss Of A Man's Sexual
Potency in The 40s ,
Men write wondering why
they have lost their potency
or desire, in their 40s or' 50s.
Some of them wonder if it
could be due to the fact that
they drank heavily in their
youth. Others wonder if it
could be due to the fact that
they have a tendency to. mel
ancholia much like that of
some of their depressed rela
tive who had a nervous break
down and had to go to a men
tal hospital. Some say that
when they are moody and
without any feeling of joy in
anything they lose all interest
in sex.
Many a wife writes wonder
ing why her husband has lost
interest. Usually, she says
she has tried hard to get him
to go to a doctor, but he will
not go. Other women say they
did get their husband to a
doctor and had him heavily
dosed with male hormones,
but this didn't do any good.
If, as in rare cases, I get
a chance to talk to the man,
I may find that one of his
main troubles is that he has
lost his love for his wife and
his sexual interest in her.
Perhaps she never ' refused
his advances, but he says she
was never much interested
in sex, or at all cooperative,
and this made him feel guilty
and unhappy. So finally he
decided to quit. He did not

bother her any more. As he
said, if she could have been
loving with him he would
probably have remained po
tent until he was over 70.
Other men said that as they
grew older their desire alone
was not always sufficient to
make them potent; they would
have been potent if there had
been some response from their
wives in the way of affection
and interest. In some cases
the wife explained that her
loss of interest was due large
ly to the fact that she was an
noyed, and sometimes out
raged because she had the im
pression that her husband
came to her, not because of
affection, but simply because
of his physical need. Other
wives were not affectionate
because their husbands had
so often blown their tops be
cause of violent temper, and
had said terrible things. Other
wives, for one reason or an
other, had lost respect for
their husband, or had been
outraged on learning of one
or two extra-marital affairs
they had had. Several wives
were disgusted because often
their husbands became desir
ous only because they had
drunk too much.
Difficulty Psychic
In some cases the husband
said that his wife had got
so stout that he felt offended.
The more I talk to men who
have lost sexual interest in
their 40s or 50s, the more im
pressed I am with the fact
that their difficulty is more
psychic, than physical. Curi
ously, the unconscious - part
of a man's brain may feel
very desirous, but if an "un
conscious" part of his brain
feels dissatisfied, or a bit dis
gusted or ashamed or repelled,
nothing can happen.
The advice that a physician
of much experience would
give to people starting out in
marriage would be, "Both of
you, try never to do anything
that will destroy . the happi
ness of sex." The wife should
try never to humiliate the
man by refusing him or by
showing lack of interest, and
the man should try never to
do anything that will cause
his wife to feel hurt or out
raged or just "used" without
any affection.
