Big Burg. It started when the
Los Angeles chamber of com
merce announced that the
two-county Los Angeles area
now has 55,000 more people
than the seven-county Chicago
area.
It backed up its claim with
the statement that 6,450,000
persons now live in the Los
Angeles area as compared to
only 6,397,000 in Chicago.

merce and Industry, this
crack:
"If it's true, they're grow
ing only because Chicagoans
who made their bundle in the
world's most productive mar
ket are going out there to
RETIRE." He added with a
righteous sniff: "I'm not go
ing to argue about it. I don't
know, and they don't either.
We'll have to wait until the
1960 census. But I'm sure
we're over six and a half mil
lion now."

We love the vast sweeps of
our high deserts at the hour
when the sage is tinged with
purple and the horizon moun
tains are inky-blue against a
crystalline sky. We love our
trails where a man can be
alone with his saddle horse
and his pack mule and yet
never FEEL alone.
. Here in our State of Jeffer
son, we want just enough
company but not too much.

"communes" that have been
decreed by China's communist
government as the proper
way for Chinese to live.
What's a commune?
One guesses it's something
like the pigeon - holes that
were placed in the back of
old-fashioned roll-top desks,
the idea being to provide
pace where a fabulous num
ber of papers could be tucked
away and FORGOTTEN.
That seems to be what they're
doing with the Chinese they're
tucking into communes.
I'll risk a small bet. The
Chinese who are being tuck
ed into these communes are
n't going to like it. They'll
like it less and less as time
passes. I could go a little far
ther and offer a prediction
that the time will come when
both Chicago and Los Angeles
will wish they had a few less

To ASC Committee
Donald Nichols, Ashland,
was elected chairman of the
Jackson County Agricultural
Stabilization and Conservation
committee at a recent county
convention of delegates.
Other oilicers elected in
clude Albert Straus, Gold Hill,
vice chairman; Francis Krouse,
Grants Pass, regular member;
Ray Vogel, Central Point, first
alternate; and Earl Peffley,

OSEA Hears Report
Jack Mace, delegate from
the Southern Oregon chapter
of the Oregon State Employ
ees association,- reported at a
recent meeting in Grants Pass
that the wage differential
resolution has been approved
by the general council of the
OSEA.
The association will present
the information to the Oregon
legislature next year in hopes
of gaining a resolution to the
problem of long working
hours experienced by certain
state employees without com
pensation. Cole Rivers and Charles
Shappard of the game com
mission presented the eve
ning's program discussing the
commission's organization and
operation.

Parents and members of
Den 10, Cub Scouts, held their
annual Christmas party Mon
day night in the multi-pur
pose room at Howard school
Lee Graham was master of
ceremonies.
Den 3 presented a Christ
mas skit, and the Nativity
scene was presented by Dens
2, 4, 5, 6, and 8, and directed
by Mrs. Ranata Beckman of
Den 8.
Santa Claus also partici
pated in the program. Re
freshments were served and
the group sang Christmas
carols.

Sugared Walnuts
These sugared walnuts have
orange flavor; can be done
surprisingly quickly. Heat
2Vfc cups walnut halves in mc
derate oven, 350 degrees, for
about 15 minutes, stirring of
ten. Combine and cook one-half
cup fresh orange juice, one ta
blespoon grated orange peel,
one cup sugar, one. teaspoon
cinnamon and one teaspoon
salt to soft ball stage (236 de
grees, if you've a thermom
eter) without stirring. Add
cooled walnut halves and stir
until mixture becomes
creamy. Turn out on greased
plate. Spread nuts to separate
as they cool.
Tree Cookies. To make
cookie decorations for your
tree, make a hole with an ice
pick in each cookie before
baking. When baked, thread
colored string or ribbon
through the hole and tie it to
the tree. Wrap for eating la
ter or leave unwrapped for
decoration only. ,.
Fruit Cake Idea. Tradition
ally the fruit cake is sliced
and offered with a glass of
dessert wine, a cup of tea or
coffee. New west coast notion
is to cut part, of the fruit cake
into bit-sized squares and of
fer them as confections. Sim
ply roll the little pieces . in
powdered sugar or dip them
in melted semi-sweet choco
late and leave plain or top
with an almond or candied
cherry.
Candied Yams
These are done with orange
marmalade. Open a can of
golden yams; pour off syrup
and save. Slice yams cross
wise in casserole. Pour enough
of syrup in casserole- to fill
just below level of sliced
yams. Top yams with enough
orange marmalade to cover -about
one-fourth inch.
Squeeze lemon juice from
half a lemon evenly over mar
malade and salt slightly. Dot
with butter.
Bake uncovered about half
ah hour at 325 degrees. The
yarns will absorb most of the
syrup and a glaze will form
on top. Six servings..
Fruit Cake Decoration. Add
ing final decorations to a fruit
cake should be done after the
cake has been properly aged.
You can give it . a beautiful
glaze by brushing its surface
with hot corn syrup which
has been brought to a full
boil. Before the glaze hardens
add your decorations of toast
ed almonds, walnut halves
and glazed fruits.
Snacks For
Tree Trimmers
A cheese and fruit tray
with assorted crackers is a
handy thing to have around
for snacking tree trimmers,
hungry carolers, afternoon or
evening "dropper in." Coffee
for the grown-ups, hot choc
olate or cider for the young
people. Or this assortment
would be tops for a help-your-self
dessert for an informal
party.
Cheese assortment might in
clude a nutty-flavored, red
skinned Gouda cheese; alter
nating half slices of Old York
and Swiss cheese; a triangular
wedge of natural cheddar,
sharp aged for zesty ' eating;
and a choice of whipped
creamy blue cheese or other
spread.
Grapes, a variety, with scis
sors handy for clipping, pol
ished red and yellow apples
and Winter pears with fruit
knife handy for quartering.
Cracker assortment, of course.
Maraschino Garnishes
Glassed maraschino cher
ries come in both ,red and
green; can be used to dress up
many holiday goodies.
Use as decorating or filling
for any sweet bread, coffee
cake, petit fours or cupcakes;
as buttons for gingerbread
men..
Arrange three or four well
drained maraschino cherry
halves on orange or lemon
slices as garnish for turkey or
a main dish salad.
Try Allspice
Allspice, whose flavor ' so
much resembles a blend of
cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg,
is also an ideal flavor aid in
cakes, pies, fruit sauces and
puddings, relishes.
The fruits of the' northwest
. . . apples, pears, prunes - all
go nicely with allspice. Stew
ed pears have more appeal
when seasoned with whole
allspice, whole cloves, or stick
cinnamon.
Fruit salads, too, are tastier
if sprinkled lightly with all
spice, nutmeg or mace. When
baking apples try sprinkling
with a dash of allspice.
Spiced Coffee
Gracious and gay is the holi
day coffee tray that offers
sniced coffee glorified with
whipped cream and Offered
with thin slices of golden or
dark fruit cake or Christmas
cookies.
Use three two-inch sticks of
cinnamon bark and six whole
cloves for one quart of coffee.
Put them in the bowl of a
vacuum coffee maker, in the
cold water of the percolater or
in the pot of a drip coffee
maker. Brew coffee double
strength which means four
tablesoons coffee to each cup
(eight ounces) of water. Serve
in demitasse cups topped with
whipped cream.

Cake Breakfast Treat

enings. Serve this quick bread
with orange slices, crisp bac
on, little pig sausages and
perhaps soft-cooked eggs.
1V4 cups sifted enriched
flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
Vi teaspoon sale .
cup sugar
egg, beaten
cup milk
tablespoons melted shortening
Sugar Plum Topping
together flour, baking
powder, salt and sugar. Com
bine egg, milk and shortening.
Add to flour mixture, stirring
until mixture is smooth. Pour
into greased eight-inch square
pan. Arrange Sugar Plum Top
ping on batter and bake in
moderately hot oven (400 de
grees) 25 minutes.

range 8 to 10 cooked and
pitter plums or prunes on bat
ter, allowing one piece of fruit
for each serving., Mix two
tablespoons sugar and one
quarter teaspoon cinnamon
and sprinkle over fruit.

Local Clubs Hit
Prejudice On :
Older Workers
A number of local organ
izations are working on em
ployer prejudice against older
persons, according to Mrs.
Fred Rankin, spokesman for
the local Council on Aging.
Robert Lunday, former old
er workers counselor at the
local office of the Oregon
State Employment Service is
chairman of. a committee
working on the problem under
the. council. Several organiza
tions in the Rogue valley are
reported to : be interested in
this project also. The Eagles
lodge prepared and circulated
a petition on this matter which
was forwarded to Congress.
The Medford Business and
Professional Women have a
loan fund to be used for
training older women. Also
maintaining a fund for this
purpose is the Altrusa Serv
ice club . for women which
have been offering a $250
grant for the last' five years
to any older woman who
needs retraining to earn her
living. Two teachers; two busi
ness women and one practical
nurse have received this grant.
Have Council Representatives
Both of the women's clubs
have representatives on the
Rogue Valley Council on Ag
ing since they believe the wel
fare of the older worker is of
great concern to the com
munity, it was pointed out.
The Oregon State Council
on the Aging is planning a
campaign in state, county and
city governments for hiring
