Body of Woman
Found in Grave;
Police Hold Suspect
Ventura, Calif. -(UPD- Po
lice said today Mrs. Olga Dun
can, 30, an expectant mother
may have been buried alive
by two men allegedly hired to
kill her by her husband's
mother.
The body of the attractive
Canadian nurse was uncover
ed Sunday in a shallow, hand-
dug grave in a construction
area about 10 miles north of
here. She was clad only in a
nylon bathrobe.
Said Hired for S6.000
Augustine Baldonado, 25,
who broke down under intens
ive questioning, told police
Mri. Elizabeth Duncan, 54
hired him and Luis Moya, 22,
for $6,000 to kill Olga. He led
police to the grave, covered
by six inches of dirt.
"Maybe she was alive when
we buried her," he said. "I
don't know. We strangled her
and I think we killed her be
fore we put her in the ground,
but I'm not sure."
Authorities said it appeared
the bizarre case developed
from a triangle between Olga,
her husband, Frank, and his
mother who was afraid of los
ing her son, a prominent San
ta Barbara attorney.
Only last week the often-
wed mother confessed to po
lice that she carried out a
bold plot of posing as her own
daughter-in-law and getting
her son's marriage annulled.
District Attorney Roy Gus
tafson questioned Mrs. Dun
can late Sunday night but he
refused to say if the woman
denied Baldonado's charge
that she hired the two men to
kill her daughter-in-law.
Moya Denies Charges
Moya denied the charges,
police said. He buried his face
in his hands and muttered, "I
don't 6ee why he (Baldonado)
would say I had anything to
do with it."

sie Kupcyzk, was reported to
have collapsed from shock
and a heart attack when she
learned that her daughter had
been slain.
Elias Kupcyzk, 61, Olga's
father, refused comment on
the brutal slaying. He said he
planned to leave for here
shortly to arrange burial for
his daughter.
Duncan was unavailable for
comment.

Southern Action Feared
At least one northern mem
ber of the so-called liberal
bloc in the House said he fear
ed that angry southerners
would block liberal legisla
tion if Alford is not seated.
This member, who declined
to be identified, predicted the
House would vote to seat Al
ford and said the issue con
ceivably could be resolved by
a compromise.
Under this compromise, he
said, the northern wing of the
House Democrats would be
granted a greater voice on the
House Rules Committee in re
turn for the seating of Alford
The liberal bloc has been
demanding a more influen
tial role on the committee in
order to make fcure that it
does not block the legislation
the northerners want.

National Foundation To Offer
Scholarships in Health Fields

step in the National Founda
tion's expanded fight against
disease, local chapters will
participate in a multi-million
dollar Health Scholarship pro
gram, it has been announced
by Basil O'Connor, president
of the National Foundation.

The new scholarship pro
gram aims to awaken interest
in all health professions and
to encourage young Ameri
cans to choose careers in the
health fields. It is the first
such program ever attempted
at both the national and local
levels, O'Connor said.
In explaining the program,
O'Connor said chapters in
each state will offer National
Foundation Health Scholar
ships providing four years of

medicine, medical social work,
nursing, physical therapy and
occupational therapy.
On Geographic Basis
The first scholarships will
be offered on a geographic
basis before the end of the
1958-59 school year with no
state receiving less than five
scholarships.
The Foundation will offer
annually a minimum of 505
scholarships each of which
will require $2,000 in March
of Dimes funds.
All graduating high school
students who have been ac
cepted by colleges or univer
sities for an accredited pro
gram are eligible to apply for
scholarships in nursing, phys
ical therapy and occupational
therapy. For medical social
workers, scholarships will be
available at the junior college
year. For doctors, scholarships
can start at the junior, senior
or first graduate year, de
pending upon the applicant's
medical school.
Chapters Accept Applications
All chapters will accept
health scholarship applica
tions. Awards will be made
on a competitive basis, con
sidering scholastic achieve
ment and financial need, by
state-wide committees that
include members of the five
health programs. Local chap
ters will present the awards, to
the winners.

Chamber Enters Travel
Displays In City Series
Jackson County Chamber
of Commerce will participate
in a nationwide program of
travel promotion to start late
in January, Chamber Man
ager Don MeNeil announced
today.
The promotion will start
with an exhibit in Kansas
City in January. This county
will enter a 32-foot colored
and illuminated set of dis
plays at the Kansas City trav
el and vacation show and six
other major expositions, Mc
Neil said. Jackson . county
tourist attraction literature
will be passed out at the exhi
bit to the. 1V4 million pros
pective travelers expected to
see the exhibits, the chamber
manager added.
The series of exhibits are
scheduled, besides . Kansas
City, for Chicago, Feb. 27 to
March 8; Cleveland, March
