Newspaper Sfnke Talks Continue
New York-OJU-Another ef
fort was to be made today to
end the costly newspaper
strike, which has stilled the
presses of nine New York
dailies and caused frustration
and bewilderment among the
reading public of the nation's
largest city.
Negotiations between the
Publishers Association of New
York and the striking News
paper and Mail Deliverers
Union were to be resumed
this afternoon under the aus
pices of the Federal Media
tion and Conciliation Service.
Up to now, the 13 th day
of the strike, neither side has
been able to see eye to eye
and there were evidences that
other craft unions, whose
members have been furlough
ed without pay, were becom
ing restive. About 15,000
workers, including reporters,
printers and pressmen, have
been idled as a result of the
walkout of the 4,500 deliverers.

Allergies: How Does One
Discover Them?
Many people write, rather
puzzled, because they say an
allergist gave them 300 skin
tests and then
either told
them that al-

foods they ate
were bad for
them, or he
told them that
none of . them
was bad. Actu-
W ally, many
Dr. Aivare years ago
some of the best allergists be
came so disgusted with the
skin tests for food that they
practically quit using them
for that purpose. The tests
can be very helpful in cases
of hay fever and asthma. At
the Mayo Clinic we used
them for food only when the
patient ' expected us to, and
would think that we didn't
know our business if we did
not use them.
I remember once year's ago
going into the office of one
of America's leading allergists
an old friend of mine to
discuss this problem with him.
He said, "I still think skin
tests for food are sometimes
helpful, and so I use them.
Here, for instance, is a patient
just tested; see how many
foods he reacts to." But, on
picking up the patient's rec
ord I saw that two months be
fore, when he had been skin-
tested, he had reacted to a dif
ferent set ' of foods, so I was
not favorably impressed. For
a while some allergists tried
to improve matters by having
the patient eat a certain food
and then seeing whether his
white blood count would
change. Others gave a food
and watched to see if the
pulse rate would change. To
me, these tests seem too cum
bersome, time-consuming and
expensive.
See What Happens
In my untutored simplicity,
I always have thought the
easiest and surest and cheap
est way to find out if a person
is sensitive to a food is to have
him eat it and see what hap
pens. During my years at the
Mayo Clinic,. I was constantly
seeing people who said they
thought all their nervous
troubles, their insomnia, their
bad temper, heir unhappi
ness, or their annoyance with
their husband was due to the
eating of some one food. In
these cases I used first to
make sure that the patient did
not have the rare type of se
vere and dangerous food al
lergy in which, after eating
perhaps one clam, the patient
drops to the floor unconscious
and black in the face. Then I
would ask the woman to eat
at dinner a large helping of
the food she feared. In prac
tically every case she came in
next morning rather shame
facedly to admit that she had
slept like a top; and had had
no symptoms. Obviously, her
hunch had been wrong, and
she was not allergic' to the
food she had feared.
I always tell people who
have symptoms only , once in
10 days or more to keep a rec
ord of the unusual foods
eaten just before they, get the
blow-up. For instance; I used

to have attacks of distressing
abdominal pain, perjiaps with
diarrhea and nausea. When I
kept a record, I found that
before every one of these at
tacks I had eaten chicken or
chicken soup or, worst of all
chicken gravy. Until I was 50
I kept having painful canker
sores in my mouth. When I
kept a record of the unusual
foods eaten just before each
attack, I soon found that I al
ways had eaten chocolate.
Since I have quit eating
chicken and chocolate, I have
had a perfect digestion and no
canker sores.
Try New Food
Some persons who constant
ly are having their distressing
symptoms can find out quick
ly whether these are due to
some food. All they have to
do is, for two days, to eat
nothing but broiled lamb, rice,
butter, sugar and canned
pears. If their symptoms dis
appear, all they need to do is
to try out a new food each
day to see if it is good or bad.
For instance, for years a
woman suffered from abdomi
nal misery and pain in her
gallbladder region. Operations
had not helped. After one day
on my lamb and rice diet she
was perfectly comfortable and
had the first good night's rest
in years. When she started to
test foods to see which one
