OPEN MONDAY AND TUESDAY UNTIL
Friday, Dec, 12
I visited the robin roost north of Phoenix in the late
afternoon. However, I didn't get there until 4:45 and most
of them seemed to be already in, so I didn't get any chance
to estimate their numbers as they flew in. There seemed to
be a good many both of robins and starlings that had already
gone down into the blackberry tangles where they spend
the night in the utmost safety.
Sunday, Dec. 14
In the afternoon I figured that if I stayed home I would
just waste my time looking at the football game on the TV,
so I might as well go out to see if I could see some birds. I
had borrowed a key to the gate for the road leading up on
Table Rock and decided I would try going up there for the
first time. The main objective from a birding standpoint
was to see whether some rock wrens might be resident there.
The only place we found them previously is Pompadour Cliff.
I found that without a doubt some of the edges of Table
Rock are ideal places for rock wrens. There are not only
cliffs but also lots of loose rock. In fact I am pretty sure
that I saw one although it flew away before I actually got
a good view of it in my binoculars. I sat on a rock in the
sunshine for quite a while waiting for one to come into view,
but it didn't come back. It certainly was a beautiful after
noon and I was happy to be out.
Monday, Dec. 15
J. H. wasn't able to go out birding today. Since I had
been out for two hours the previous afternoon I decided
to limit myself to two hours this morning so that I would
have time to do some other necessary things, and I kept my
self well within the self-imposed limitation. I decided to go
up Wagner Creek where a friend had told me she saw what
looked to her and her husband like pine grosbeaks. This
interested me very much because there are very few records
for this species in Oregon, especially in the western part.
I didn't have the good fortune to find them although I
believe from the account the identification was correct. How
ever, I did find that their place along the creek with some
trees and brush there and some open fields nearby was an
ideal place for birds. I listed 21 or 22 right there in a short
period of time. I was most pleased to see the little winter
wrens. (I don't really know whether I saw several or one
several times.) They are cute little dark birds with a short,
perky tail. They like to poke around in brush piles. My
friend says they see them often and they are very tame.
Robins, cedar waxwings, American goldfinches and pine
siskins were flying . down to the creek to bathe. They evi
dently don't feel the way I do about cold water on a cold
morning. I also saw a fox sparrow along a woodsy path and
a savannah sparrow on a fence by one of the open fields.
There was a myrtle warbler flitting in the trees.

Tuesday, Dec. 16 ,
Ralph Browning called up to say that he had visited
the robin roost, staying around there for a considerable
time after school, and the robins and starlings just were
not there, except for a small flock of a hundred or so robins.
Now I wonder where they have gone? I also wondered
whether some person had tried to shoot them or kill them
in some way at their roost, but he said he saw very little
evidence of that. I know that there are still robins and
starlings in the valley, so we'll have to find out where they
are roosting.
Thursday, Dec. 18
Today for once I had a chance to look at the birds after
I put up peanut butter on the branches of our oak tree. I was
interested to see that juncos and white crowned sparrows
were again the ones that came to it. I think there was also
a golden-crowned sparrow. In the thick fog it was pretty
hard to tell one bird from another even at that close range.
In the evening I groped through the fog to Hedrick
Junior high to a Christmas program. It was worth the grop
ing. I don't know much of anything more beautiful than
young voices singing Christmas carols. I love nature, but
people when they are what God meant them to be can attain
levels of beauty higher even than anything else in the realm
of nature.-T.M.
A TRIBUTE
TO CHRISTMAS DAY!
Whether you're young or merely young in heart,
the coming of Kris Kingle brings a thrill not
equalled by any other holiday! Dad and Mother
ire busy for weeks ahead . . . holding secret
conferences and planning what each loved one
will get on Christmas morning. Yet Christmas
means infinitely more than the exchanging of
gifts. It commemorates the first chapter of the
Greatest Story Ever Told . . . and it should be a
time of rejoicing, for it is the anniversary of
Christendom. So a Merry Christmas to you all
. . . and may your wishes be abundantly fulfilled
this year and every year!
