Mr. G. H. - My husband
died less than, a year ago and
a few months ago his best
friends proposed to me. I put
him off at tht time, but now
I feel that I would like to ac
cept him.
My married daughter, with
whom I've been living, is all
upset by the idea. She doesn't
see how I could ever consider
marriage before a full year
has elapsed. But she doesn't
understand how lonesome I
feel. My daughter and son-in-law
have tried to make me
feel at home here, and I adore
the children, but I can't help
feeling like a stranger in a
place that doesn't belong to
me.
My daughter has made me
feel ashamed of myself for
consdering this idea. Is it real
ly so terrible?
Beverly L. - Mother really
did shock me when she came
out with this idea. I never ex-

pected it and couldn't have be
lieved it could happen only a
few months ago.
My parents were married
for 35 years and I never knew
them to have an argument.
My father was the most de
voted husband I've ever seen.
He did more than he could to
make Mother happy. She nev
er had to work as hard as
other women and she got so
much appreciation for every
thing she did.
Mother keeps calling her
suitor Dad's best friend, but I
remember that Dad had quite
a few things to say against
him in his lifetime. He doesn't
come anywhere near Dad as a
human being. How can Mother
consider him?
The Council Beverly
seems to be confusing a lot of
different feelings and is, there
fore, in a poor position to give
her mother any advice about
the proposed marriage.
Possibly, out of a certain
sense of rivalry with her
mother, Beverly likes to see
herself as more loyal to her
father's memory. This is rath
er unfair as this kind of "loy
alty" costs Beverly nothing.
Rather, she sees herself en
hanced in her own eyes be
cause of it. It is likely that
her mother's unstated feeling
about her husband goes much
deeper and is less selfish.
Beverly's implied accusa
tion that her mother is dese
crating her father's memory
by considering marriage to a
man who might not measure
up to the deceased man's
standards is cruel as it is fool
ish. Noble though he may have
been, Beverly's father's opin-

ions cannot be taken as the
final word about anyone. We
assume that he was human
and capable of error and dis
tortion. Even if he were es
sentially right in his criti
cisms, Mrs. G. H.'s suitor may
make a good husband despite
all his faults.
Mrs. G. H. ought to put
Beverly's unsound objections
out of her mind, and take on
the responsibility for- a more
careful appraisal of her own
situation. She should be aware
that this early period after her
husband's death is a rather
dangerous time. In their grief
and loneliness widows some
times make important decis
ions they later regret.
If this proposed marriage is
really a good thing .for Mrs.
G. H., nothing will be lost if
she takes her time and con
siders carefully. She ' should
try to get her bearings social
ly so that she will be able to
consider her future In terms
of what possibilities will be
open to her in the next few
years of her life.
