Coast Guard Joins
Search for Body
Of Missing Woman

The Coast Guard has joined
in the search for the body
of missing Olga Duncan, 30
whose mother - in - law con
fessed carrying out a bold
plot to end her marriage.
Police and FBI agents al
ready have undertaken an ex
tensive search for the young
expectant mother who com
plained in letters that her
mother-in-law, Mrs. Elizabeth
Duncan, 54, strongly opposed
her marriage
Olga has beert missing since
November and it was feared
she may have been murdered

Wednesday made a dramatic
courtroom appearance on be
half of his often-wed mother
and succeeded in having her
bail reduced from $50,000 to
$5,000.

Siorm Systems
Over Great Lakes

A series of small storm
systems raced across the
Great Lakes Thursday, tumbl
ing temperatures and spread
ing snow flurries into the
Northeast.
A warming trend which
earlier snapped a record early
December cold wave in the
nation's interior, pushing into
the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic
states Wednesday, lifting
readings well above freezing.
Not So Severs
The new wintery blasts
sweeping out of Canada were
not expected to be as severe
or prolonged as the cold wave
which hit the eastern two
thirds of the country Dec. 6.
Overnight readings skidded
in the Southeastern Great
Lakes region and the Central
and Southern Plains as a dis
turbance moved across the
lakes. Behind the storm track,
warmer weather was record
ed from the Northern Rockies
to the Northwest Great Lakes.
' Snow flurries occurred dur
ing the night in the Northest
and the Northern Great Lakes
while light rain or freezing
rain extended into Iowa.
Cold Blamed for Deaths
The cold Wednesday was
blamed for at least 10 more
fire deaths in the South, rais
ing to at least 57 the number
of persons killed in fires in
nine Southeastern states since
the start of the cold snap over
the South last week.
In the Far West, rain con
tinued from Northwest Ore
gon in Western Washington,
while fair, warm weather per
sisted over the Great Basin,
producing high forest fire dan
cer in Southern California.
Weathermen predicted
mostly cloudy skies Thursday
in the nation's northern half
with snow flurries continu
ing in the Northern and Low
er Great Lakes. Snow flurries
also were seen for the North
ern Rockies.
The elder Mrs. Duncan was
arrested last Saturday on
charges of forgery, perjury
and filing false statements o
end her son's marriage to the
attractive Canadian nurse.
She admitted to authorities
that she paid a man $60 to
pose as Duncan while she
posed as Olga. They traveled
to nearby Ventura and ob
tained an annulment of the
marriage on grounds that it
had not been consummated.
Reduction Granted -
Duncan, confident and
square - shouldered, appeared
in Ventura Municipal Court
at his mother's side and de
manded a reduction in her
bail.
District Attorney Roy Gus
tafson opposed the reduction
because "of the disappearance
of this man's wife" and the
fact that a "homicide charge
may be involved."
Judge Richard D. Heaton
agreed with Duncan that the
present charges against Mrs.
Duncan warranted a reduc
tion in bail. She was freed
on $5,000 bail until a prelim
inary hearing set for Dec. 30.
Duncan said later that he
and his wife, had separated
several weeks after their mar- j
riage but continued to see i
each other up until her dis-1
appearance.
He said his mother posi-:
tively has denied any involve
ment in Olga's disappearance.
Some Hmderance
Asked if he thought his
mother hindered the marriage,
he said, "Well, she hindered
its development. As for the
fake annulment, I truly ques
tion why she did it ... I
haven't the faintest idea . . .
it has no legal status."
Mrs. Duncan has had some
experience in having mar
riages annulled, authorities
reported. They said she has
been married at least four
times since 1951, including a
brief marriage to her son's
young classmate at Hastings
Law School in San Francisco,
Marine Lt. Stephen S. Gillis,
27.
She married Gillis Jan. 6,
1954, and several months later
obtained an annulment as she
did in at least two other mar
riages, authorities said.
Progress Reported
In Airline Talks
Chicago-(UPD-Some progress
was reported today in almost
continuous negotiations aimed
at heading off a crippling
strike against American Air
lines in advance of the
Christmas travel rush.
An airline spokesman said
prospects brightened for set
tlement before a midnight
Friday strike deadline during
negotiations which ended in
the early morning hours.
Talks were to resume this
morning.
The Air Line Pilots Asso
ciation announced it would
call out 1,500 pilots in a
strike against American at a
minute to midnight Friday in
a prolonged dispute over a
new contract.
Anti-Bombing Bill
Receives Support
Washington (LTD Senate
Democratic whip Mike Mans
field said today Senate Demo
crats would vote for a "North
South" bill to outlaw hate
bombings regardless of what
the administration does on
civil rights.
The Montana Democrat an
nounced his personal support
of a stringent anti-bombing
bill which would carry up to
the death penalty for inci
dents resulting in loss of life.
He referred to the revised
Kennedy-Ervin bill, which
would deal with attacks on
churches, schools, syna
gogues and other public
buildings - including "busi
ness" structures.
Princes Given
Cardinal's Oath
Vatican City - (UPD - New
princes of the Roman Catho
lic Church took the cardinal's
oath amid the splendor of
ancient ceremony today,
promising to support Pope
John XXIII even "to the
point of shedding my blood."

Peter to watch the Pontiff
place broad-brimmed and tas
selled red hats on the heads
of 20 new cardinals as sym
bols of their office.
Three other new church
princes were receiving their
red hats from the Catholic
chiefs of state of the nations

At one point during today's
ceremony, the new church
princes prostrated themselves
before the altar in the Chapel
of St. Petronilla and com
pletely covered their bodies
with red capes and scarlet
hoods while the choir chant
ed: "We pray Thee, therefore,
help Thy servants whom
Thou hast redeemed by Thy
precious blood.".
Pope John embraced each
new cardinal and called him
"brother."

Heavily Damaged
An automobile operated by
Byron Neil Holmes 51, of
2495 West Main st., was heav
ily damaged in a two vehicle
accident Wednesday, at 2 p.m.

on West Main st., state police
reported.
Police said that the Holmes
vehicle, traveling west, at
tempted a left turn into a
service station, crossing in
front of an automobile oper
ated by Robert Andrew
Brown, 27, of 115 Geager rd.,
Medford. It was foggy at the
time of the incident, police
said.
No citations were issued.
