Feared by Californians
By HAL WOOD
San Francisco -(UPD- Uni
versity of California's under
dog f o o tb a 1 1 team went
through another sweat-wringing
workout jn the unseasonal
heat and Coach Pete Elliott
opined that he didn't need to
worry about any of his boys
being overweight.
"We'll be in condition," said
the soft-spoxen mentor, who
isn't the most talkative person
in the world. "And we'll show
up."
That's about as far as Elli
ott will go in the way of pre
dictions. He knows that his
thrice-beaten team is a three
touchdown underdog to Randy
Duncan & Co.
What he fears most is the
way the Hawkeyes score from
a long ways out. He's afraid
that when one of the Iowa
speedsters , breaks into the
open, his boys won't be able
to sprint fast enough to bring
him down. All year long, Iowa
has struck like lightning from
40, 50 and 60 yards to score
touchdowns.
Bears Run, Too
What Pete doesn't mention,
but couldn't possibly have for
gotten, is that the Golden
Bears did a pretty good job
With the spread slimmed to
53 to 45, Ron Peery hit two
free tosses for the Tiremen
and Dick Niles put in a re
bounder for 53 to 49. Derald
sank a jump from outside
for 53 to 51 but Don Jacob
son of GP put in a driver
With 40 seconds remaining,
Niles hit from out for 55 to
53.
Tom Flynn of GP was foul
ed with five seconds to play,
He missed his shot and Woot-
en tipped the ball to Doug
Witte who barely missed on
a shot three-fourths the length
of the floor.
Flynn was high point man
with 13 while Don Reese and
Ron Robertson had 10 for
Grants Pass. Bill Madden
scored 11 for Hawkinson's.

of scoring from the hinter
lands, too.
Joe Kapp, the all-around
quarteback, - can get up quite
a head of steam. He connected
once from 92 yards. Of course,
the fact that the play was a
mistake doesn't alter the
score. On this one, Kapp tried
to hand off to Jack Hart, but
Hart didn't take the ball. So
Joe just kept it and followed
Jack for the 92-yard touch
down romp.
On another play, this one
planned, Kapp rolled out
around end for 45 yards to
score. Hart" once went 55
yards for a counter. And then
there is the case of Frank
Sally, a line-man, who inter
cepted one of Lee Grosscup s
passes in the flat in the Utah
game and rolled back 68 yards
to score.
Look To The Past
Of course, Pete isn't look
ing at moving pictures of the
California games these days.
In the Cal gym he has four
films of Iowa's games this
year. Every day or so he calls
in his assistants and the squad
and they watch the speedy
Iowans. run for touchdowns.
They groan when Bob Jeter,
Ray Jauch or Don Horn break
into the open.
They think that Randy Dun
can is a very line passer
but maybe he can run, also.
"The few times we have
seen him run in the films,"
said Elliott, "he looks like he
can go when he has to."
So Pete is busy setting up
a defense for Randy there,
too.

Coach Jack Woodward said
that the offensive work in

against St. Francis last week
with the Saints held to only
three field goals in the last

The mentor said last night
that he was not able at this

Pirate varsity was strength

Ran Baker up from the jun

Henley is expected to pro

players as Burell Gober, Le

Established for
Special Seasons
Portland Big game hunt
ers have until Jan. 15 to file
application for the 1959
emergency season list, the
Oregon game commission said
today. Interested persons are
urged to apply by post card
for eligibility on the list. Ap
plicants are cautioned to ap
ply for only one county since
duplicate applicants will be
discarded.
Authority for emergency
big game hunts was author
ized by the 1957 legislature to
control crop damage. Under
provisions of the law, the
commission may declare a
damage control season on
short notice for not more than
75 animals in an area less
than a township in size.
Since the need for emer
gency hunts cannot be pre
dicted, it is necessary to estab
lish rosters of eligible hunters
in advance. Any resident 17
years or older may apply by
mailing a post card to the
game commission, 1634 S.W.
Alder, Portland.
License To Hunt
All post cards received be
fore 5 p.m. on Jan. 15 will be
considered in the drawing to
be held Jan. 20 to determine
the listing order of applicants.
Information required on the
card includes full name, age,
address, telephone number,
and county applied for. A
hunting license is not required
at the time of applying but is
necessary before participating
in a hunt.
The order of eligibility for
each county will not be pub
lished, but rosters will be
available at the Portland and
regional offices of the game
commission by Feb. 1. Eligible
hunters will be notified in the
order of their eligibility on
the county roster when a sea
son is authorized.
Experience during 1958 in
dicates that the individual
hunter has a poor chance of
being called. Only seven emer
gency hunts were declared
and all involved elk damage.
These included two in Union
county, one in Wallowa coun
ty, two in Clatsop county, one
in Douglas county, and one in
Coos county. A total of 101
hunters participated and
bagged 50 elk. More than
7,000 hunters applied for eli
gibility on the 1958 county
roster.
