"SAVAGE" ESCAPES The over-enthusiastic football fan at left almost pulled out
of his shirt, but he escaped from police during the near-riot following the 49ers-Colts
football game at Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. The riot ensued when police tried
to prevent the tearing down of the goal-posts after a 21 to 12 victory by the home
town team. Police described the rioters as "like savages."

Store Has Open House

Butte Falls Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Pingle held an open
house at the Butte Falls gen
eral store Dec. 10 in honor of
the fifth anniversary of the
business.
Coffee, cake, cookies and
ice cream were served.
The Pingles are formerly of
Mil Mar ranch and purchased
the Butte Falls general store
from Mr. and Mrs. Les Ryles
in 1953 and have been in bus
iness there ever since.
Among the improvements to
the store, the Pingles built a
new addition and installed a
warm room locker plant in
1955.

went to Union, Ore., to spend
Thanksgiving with Stauffer's
sister-in-law and brother, Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Stauffers. On
their return trip, the Stauffers
stopped at Redmond to visit
Mr. and Mrs. Bert Meeks,
Page Stauffer's sister and
brother-in-law.

The PTA met at the high
school Monday, Dec. 8. Mrs.
Chas. Ferguson, house num
bers chairman, announced that
all all lots had been num
bered in Butte Falls and any
one wishing .to know their
number might inquire of any
member of the PTA.
Members were asked to
save M.J.B. coffee bands in
order to obtain a coffee pot.
Third grade mothers served
refreshments and fourth and
fifth grade mothers will serve
at the next meeting.
Room count gave the ice
cream party to the sixth and
seventh grades for 'the highest
percentage of parents present.
A Christmas program fol
lowed. Greg Jolliffe sang a
solo, accompanied by Mrs.
Howard Simmonds on the pi
ano. Steve Stratton read a
Christmas poem. Members
and guests sang Christmas
carols under the direction of
Mrs. Leonard Stratton, accom
panied by Mrs. Roger Harris
on the piano.
Grange members and guests
will attend a Christmas party
Saturday, Dec. 20, at the high
school. A potluck supper will
be served at 6:30 p.m. A gift
exchange will follow. The
men are asked to bring a gift
for a man, the women for a
woman and the children for
children. Mrs. Bob Wells

First Consistory
Vatican City-OIPD-The new
cardinals of the Roman Cath
olic church attend their first
consistory today to receive
their red hats from Pope John
XXIII.
It was the first of three
consistories at which the new
princes of the church were to
be awarded the symbols of
their office. The other signs
of rank were the cardinals
rings, titles and scarlet robes.

'Vigorous Action'

neth B. Keating (R-N.Y.) pre
dicted today the special House
Elections Committee would
"take vigorous action" on
complaints against segrega
tionist Dale Alford's write-in
defeat of Rep. Brooks Hays
(D-Ark.).
Keating declined to elabor
ate. But other sources specu
lated the committee might go
so far as to recommend that
the new Congress refuse to
seat Alford until a thorough
investigation of his election
has been conducted.
The committee called a
closed meeting to decide on
what action to take as House
Democrats at least tentatively
excluded the Little Rock seg
regationist from their ranks.
They did not invite him to
the Democratic Party caucus
Jan. 6, paving the way for an
almost certain showdown vote
on whether to admit him at

Kowalski, veteran member of
the central committee of the
United Peasant Party and a
former Polish cabinet minis
ter, died here last Sunday, it
was disclosed today.

campaign against Hays, the
veteran congressman who as

would decide to go ahead with
the investigation.
However, any decision to
recommend that Congress
temporarily refuse to seat Al
ford was expected to come
on a split vote. The commit
tee is made up of two North
ern Republicans, one North
ern Democrat and two South
ern Democrats.
Meantime, Alford left the
capital for Little Rock, shrug
ging off the troubles that ap
peared to be mounting in his
path to the House.
Labor's Attempt
To Withdraw
Students Rapped
Portland - (CPU - The -Rev.
Willis L. Whalen, principal of
Central Catholic high school,
Tuesday, rapped the Multno
mah County Labor Council
for trying to induce parents to
withdraw their chidren from
the school over a labor dis
pute. Glenn Blake, labor council
president, announced that the
school was to be placed on the
"unfair list." Blake said the
unfair label means parents
who belong to unions will be
expected to take their chil
dren out of the school. He also
said the school probably
would be picketed.
Contract Refused
The dispute arose from the
priest's refusal to sign a con
tract with the union covering
four janitors.
"When Mr. Blake urges
Central parents to withdraw
their children from school in
order to force us to accede to
union demands, he has hit a
new low in boycotts," Father
Whalen said.
"Possibly this is the first
time in our history that a
union representative has
sought to alienate a child from
his school to achieve his
ends."
Blake said that circular!
would be passed out in the
next few days to the school's
965 students so they can in
form parents of the union side
of the dispute.
