San Francisco - (OT) - The
speculation on a new coach
to replace Frankie Albert
reached all-out proportions
Saturday even as the San
Francisco Forty Niners pre
pared for their last game of
the year against the divisional
champion Baltimore Colts.
The names mentioned ran
all the way from successful
college head mentors to third
assistant pro coaches.
Meanwhile, there was bus
iness as usual at the Forty
Niner office and a sell-out
crowd of 60,000 is anticipated
for the Albert "goodbye to
coaching" story.
"I will not enter Into any
speculation on the new coach,"
said Forty Niner president
Vic Morabito. "But we antici
pate no trouble getting the
man we want."
The rumors ran that these
men were "first in lines" for
the job:
1 Red Hickey, now an as
sistant to Albert.
2 Eddie Erdlatz, a "favor
ite son" who has had amaz
ing success at Navy for the
past few years.
3 Bud Wilkinson, the Ok
lahoma coach who always gets
a nod when there is a major
opening in the coaching
ranks.
4 Frank Leahy, ex-Notre
Dame coach, who might be
lured out of retirement.
5 Lynn (Pappy) Waldorf,
former California coach now
chief of personnel for the
Forty Niners.
6 Dick Gallagher, current
line coach for the Cleveland
Browns and former coach of
the Bay area Santa Clara
football team.
. There were others named
and it is probable that Mo
rabito has someone in mind
that never has come up for
consideration among the lo
cal followers of the Forty
Niners.
The Forty Niner players
were solid in their praise for
Albert as a coach when they
heard that he was quitting.
"It was a disappointing sea
son for everyone," said Quar
terback Y. A. Tittle, who will
call the signals against Balti
more today. "But I think
Frank did an outstanding job
If we win tomorrow, it will
be a 6-6 season, which is only
two games off our best rec
ord the 8-4 mark we had
last year in tieing for the
western division title."
