wwas unveiled in Paradise Valley,
near Phoenix, Arizi It's a three-bedroom
residence called the Solar House, and
scientists say it is the first in the world
to receive all its warmth from the sun,
including heat for its swimming pool and
water supply.
Across the country at Lexington, Mass.,
a similar house suitable for Northern
climate has just been put on the market.
Solar energy provides 75 to 80 percent

water year-round.
On a lonely mountain in New Mexico,
a strange 15-story structure is rising: a
solar furnace built by the Air Force. Its
purpose is to trap and concentrate the
energy of the sun's rays to fire a furnace
for testing materials going into missiles,
space craft, and nuclear reactors.
And beeping out in space, the Navy's
Vanguard satellite is sending signals
back to earth via a radio that gets its
power from sunlight
These are just a few of the ways the
sun's energy is working for you, doing
such diverse jobs as cooking hamburgers
and powering harbor lights; operating
cigaret lighters and running a radio
relay station. It is powering portable
radios and clocks: barbecno
movie cameras; toys and flashlights;
hearing aids and highway markers. And
some scientists predict that eventually
the sun will run everything from house
hold appliances to space ships.
Why the step-up in the use of solar
power? The era in which man had large
quantities of cheap fuels at his disposal
is drawing to a close. Within this century
it is expected that fossil fuels (coal, oil,
and gas) and nuclear fuels will become
increasingly scarce and expensive. Once

drawn from the earth and expended,
these fuels can never be replaced. The
world's only "income energy" is the sun's.
The sun showers the world daily with
several thousand times more enerev than
man uses. He has long tried to employ
this energy in ways to better himself.
Althouoh the sun supplies 1,000 tril

directly to his use until an exciting
breakthrough was made a few years ago.
Then scientists discovered that pure
silicon, if properly treated, could convert
sunlight directly into electricity.
On April 24, 1954, the solar battery, the
first successful device to convert useful
amounts of the sun's energy directly into
electricitv. was rfomnnstratorl WilU
f i uu. it iui an
amazingly simple apparatus made of
strips of silicon, scientists showed how
the suns rays could be used to send
voices over telephone wires and to power
a transistor radio transmitter. Silicon
cells have made possible many of the
solar-powered products now coming out
A portable radio, for example, gets its
power from solar batteries housed in the
handle. A solar clock has some 20 silicon
cells placed around its face. One week's
exposure will wind the clock for a year.
A solar cooker for about $30 resembles
an umbrella which, when unfolded, be
comes an aluminized mirror focusing the
sun's rays on an area of about 10 inches.
On a grill across this spot can be laid
hot dogs, hamburgers, or steaks. A $2
cigaret lighter, operating on the same
principle, is an aluminum disc with a
coiled wire in the center into which the

several years. And for tropical, arid
regions where fresh water is scarce, a
small, sun-operated water-distillation
unit has been developed. It is designed
to yield five gallons of fresh water per
day from salt or brackish water.
During World War II, sun power saved
the lives of fliers forced down at sea. An
inflatable solar still was built to float
next to life rafts. Made of a transparent
plastic, it supported a black porous pad
which became saturated with sea water.
The sun heated the sea water in the
pad and vaporized it The vapor con
densed on the colder surfaces and

the bottom of the still.

widely adopted. The Solar House near
Phoenix, for example, costs $30,000 ex
clusive of the heating system, which is
estimated to cost $5,000. But engineers

believe mass production will cut the price.
Already there are many parts of the world
where solar heat is able to compete with
conventional systems.
W
hat are the nrosnects for the future?
The house of tomorrow envisaged by -
engineers draws all its power from solar
cells on the roof. Only five days of sun
light per month would be needed to operate
the home and all its appliances plus heating
and air conditioning. Solar engineers predict
that this system will become economically
feasible within the next 15 years.
Une of the latest applications envisioned
for solar energy is a water pump which
could turn desert areas into fertile fields.
Tests are being conducted with the U.S.
Coast Guard to evaluate solar energy in
operating navigational aids. "Big Bertha," a
large solar-energy converter, is now running
a flashing light in Los Angeles harbor.
And the U.S. Forest Service is testing a
solar converter to power an experimental
radio-repeater station atop Santiago Peak in
southern California.
One of the most exciting plans disclosed
recently was for an aircraft that would fly

indefinitely on solar energy stored in the
earth's atmosphere.
Even as Government space men strain to
reach the moon with a rocket, one manufac
turer, Westinghouse Electric Corp., proposed
to the Pentagon a plan for building a lunar
power station. Government space groups are
laying plans for a future colony on the moon
for defense and scientific purposes. The lunar
power station, Westinghouse scientists say,
would service these colonies by converting
sunlight into electricity at small cost.
And on Sept. 30, the Army dedicated the
nation's largest solar furnace as the start of
a major new source of power.
The solar furnace, drawing its basic power
from the sun's rays, will be used to conduct
studies to develop protection for the armed
forces and civil-defense workers against the
radiation of nuclear and other weapons. It
also will be a major tool in creating power
for earth-orbiting aircraft and spaceships.
Radiation from the huge solar furnace an
instrument that concentrates solar radiation
by focusing the energy into an image of the
sun four inches in diameter closely simu
lates the heat radiation to which soldiers,
sailors, and airmen could be exposed in the
vicinity of atomic explosions.
Lt Gen. Arthur G. Trudeau, Army chief
of research and development, predicted the
furnace, "along with similar efforts being
made elsewhere," soon would teach the world
how to harness the unlimited energy of the
sun for mankind's beneficial use
"Solar energy wUl have far-reaching effects
in many directions which we cannot now
foresee," says John I. Yellott, executive di
rector of the Association for Applied Solai
Energy in Phoenix. "We must remember that,
in the final analysis, solar radiation is the
earth's only inexhaustible source of energy.
Daily we are learning to make it serve man
kind more effectively."
