Bowl;
Win
Miami (CPU Fran Curci's
only punt of the year took a
freakish bounce at the Ore
gon goal, died on the one-yard
line, and set up the safety
that gave Miami a sweet 2-0
victory Saturday at the end
of a bitter season.
Hurricane end Bill Poole
helped tackle Oregon's Dave
Grosz for the safety and also
pounced on a fumble at the
Miami seven, to stop an Ore
gon threat.
Oregon, whose home fans
3,500 miles away were watch
ing on nationwide television,
penetrated to the Miami seven
twice and al30 had two plays
that crossed the goal voided
by penalties.
There were 22,898 fans in
the sun-filled Orange Bowl
for a game that looked more
like jacks than football as
both teams picked up the oth
er's frequent fumbles through
the scoreless first half.
But Curci. who hadn't made
a single punt all season, found
himself in a kicking situation
in the third period without
his punter.
With the ball on the Ore
gon 40, the tiny quarterback
coolly booted it. The punt was
a good one-so good it almost
sailed over the goal. But the
football", acting more like a
billiard ball with backspin,
hopped back and abruptly
came to rest only one yard
from the double stripe.
Oregon's Dave Grayson car
ried it out to the two on the
next play. But Poole and
Daniel Coughlin caught Grosz
behind the goal on the next
play and that gave Miami its
only its second win in a 10
game season.
Oregon immediately launch
ed a drive that carried from
its own 43 to the Miami 7.
But there Len Read fumbled
and Poole gobbled up the ball.
Miami punted out only to
have Oregon drive right back
to the 12- From there, a field
goal attempt by John Clarke
was no good. Oregon tried
one more desperation field
goal in the last seconds.
Miami, like Oregon, had a
frustrating day at the goal
line and was stopped on
drives that carried to the
eight and the 14.
It was Oregon's sixth de
feat against four wins. But
Miami's failure to move the
ball across the goal gave the
Webfoots the national title in
defense against touchdowns.

Cleveland Browns Mea'aS For
Eighth WFfl. Division Title
United Press International
The Cleveland Browns can
clinch their eighth National
football league division title
in nine years by defeating the
Philadelphia Eagles Sunday
if the crippled Detroit Lions
down the New York Giants.
Cleveland, most consistent
winner in modern professional
football history, lead- New
York by one game in the East
ern division race.
Each N.F.L. team started
the weekend with two more
games. The combination of a
Cleveland triumph and a New
York defeat would put the
Browns into the Dec. 28
championship game with the
Baltimore Colts. The Colts,
who clinched the western
crown last Sunday, lost to the
Rams, 30-28, in a Saturday
afternoon game at Los An
geles. Cleveland Favorite
Cleveland (8-2) is a seven
point favorite for its game
with the Eagles (2-7-1) at Phil
adelphia. New York (7-3) is
favored over the Lions (4-5-1)
by three at Detroit.
The Pittsburgh Steelers (6-
4) are 2Vz point favorites for
their game with the Dedskins
(3-7) at Washington. Pitts
burgh: trails Cleveland bv two
games and still has a mathe
matical chance to tie for the
division title.
In Sunday's other games,
the Bears (6-4) are IVi point
favorites for their annual
clash with the Cardinals (2-7-1)
at Chicago and the Forty
Niners (4-6) are 10V4 point
choices to defeat the Green
Bay Packers (1-8-1) at San
Francisco.
The Browns and Eagles
have been embroiled in a bit
ter but largely unpublicized
feud for years. It flared again
two weeks ago at Cleveland
when the Browns won, 28-14,
and Coach Paul Brown failed
to go to the center of the
field after the game to shake
hands with Coach Buck Shaw
of the Eagles.
Feud Explained
The Eagles charged Brown
had insulted Shaw and their
fiery quarterback, Norm Van
Brocklin, promised "we'll
wallop the Browns next time."
Brown said he didn't go on
the field because an Eagle had
belted one of his players on
the noggin during post-game
maneuvers last year.
The Browns, one of the
game's great road clubs, have
lost, five of their last six
games at Philadelphia. And
the Eagles will be fired up
to tame the Brownies again.
Tommy McDonald, Van
Brocklin's chief target for
long passes, suffered a shoul
der injury at Cleveland but

NEW RING CHAMP TO
BUY 'DREAM HOUSE'
Los Angeles -(UPD-Don Jor
dan, the brand new welter
weight champion, said Satur
day he would buy a "dream
ranch" before defending his
title in a return bout with
Virgil Akins at St. Louis on
Feb. 11 or 13.
The first Los Angeles-born
welterweight ruler received a
purse of $13,447 for Friday
night's 15-round fight at the
Olympic auditorium where he
wrested the 147-pound cham
pionship from Akins, of St.
Louis, on an upset unanimous
decision.
When Jordan appeared to
day at headquarters of the Cal
ifornia state athletic commis
sion to pick up his check, he
was wearing two large pieces
of white tape over a cut on
his left brow. He said the cut,
which did not require any
stitches, would be healed in
plenty of time for him to start
training in January before the
return bout. He will do most
of his training in the Los An
geles area and go to the Mis
souri metropolis only a few
days before the fight, he said.
There was a rematch pro
vision in the contract for the
fight and Jordan said, "I'll
beat him worse next time be
cause I'll weigh lighter."
Ex-champion Akins had his
right eye completely closed
when he appeared at the com
mission to pick up his check
for $26,895 the champion's
