Planned Today
Ashland - Southern Oregon
college musicians will pre
sent the annual. Christmas
vespers program this after
noon at 3:30 o'clock. Direct
ors will be Oscar Bjorlie,
Louis Clayson and Dr. Herb
ert Cecil.
Opening the program will
be traditional carols played
by a brass ensemble. The col
lege choir will sing a group
of songs, and the Populaires
will present a scene from
"Amahl and the Night Visit
ors" by Menotti.
Closing numbers will be
sung by the choir.
Immediately following the
program, the choir will lead
the audience to the Wayne
Wells tree for the second an
nual Christmas lighting ceremony.

at a Christmas party and
meeting of Medford First
Methodist church Woman's
Society of Christian Service
"Everywhere, Everywhere,
Christmas" is the theme for
the meeting, set for Tuesday,
December 9.
Mrs. Milton Snow is in
charge of the program which
will begin at 7:30 p.m. All
women of both churches are
invited and are asked to bring
guests. There will be no busi
ness meeting and no charge as
is customary at the usual noon
luncheons. A tea and social
hour will follow the program,
Child care will be provided.
This is an evening meeting
as well as being a week ahead
of the usual circle meetings
due to the Christmas season.
Circle chairman will contact
their members to be sure all
interested in attending have
transportation.

Mrs. Josephine Clark, who celebrates her 90th birthday
anniversary today, was honored at a luncheon Wednesday
given by Riverside Bridge club. Mrs. Clark, who plays bridge
several limes a week, can't remember how long she has been
devoted to the game. Mrs. Clark is considered an excellent
player in spite of her advanced years, and three years ago
won a bridge tournament.
90th Birthday Observed

luncheon Wednesday, December 3, which observed her 90th
birthday anniversary. The event was held at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hatton, 819 Minnesota avenue.

the game.
Mrs. Clark is known among
her friends for her spirit and
gaiety. "I grow lots of vege
tables, particularly potatoes,
and lots of meanness, the old
ornery kind," Mrs. Clark said.
"That's what keeps me
young." When asked about
her hobbies she merely stated
"bridge."
Mrs. Clark Is a charter
member of Cavenish Bridge
club of Portland. She won
the individual bridge tourna
ment sponsored by Medford
Duplicate club three years
ago.
After leaving New York,
Mrs. Clark lived in St. Louis
for a number of years and
finally moved to Medford in
1905, where she has resided
since. She married Frank
Clark in 1893. Her daught
ers, Mrs. Wilbur Hendryx and
Mrs. Florence Alexander, live
in Portland and San Fran
misco. Following the luncheon for
Mrs. Clark, Riverside club
members played for master
points. North -south winners
were Roy Pruitt and Paul
Hatton, first; Mrs. Hatton
and Mrs. Al Gilhousen, sec
ond; Mrs. Frank Baker and
Robert Dickey, third; Mrs.
Fred Rehling and Mrs. Van
Gilbert, fourth.

Wearability
Test Machine
Corvallis - A "wearability"
testing machine that subjects
items of clothing and fabrics
to a lifetime of wear in a
few hours has been purchased
by the Oregon State college
school of home economics for
research and teaching pur
poses. ,
It is one of only about 20
such instruments in colleges
across the country.
Called an "accelorotor," the
machine has been used for a
study on the comparison
"wear and tear" of upholstery
fabrics and currently is being
used for research on blankets
made from wool and acrylic
fibers. .
Next year, the department
of clothing, textiles and re
lated arts is, planning a study
of the wearability of cottons.
Research findings will be pub
lished as projects are com
pleted. Research workers include
Miss Barbara Buckwalter, Dr.
Florence Petzel, and Miss
Phyllis Grant.
Small samples, rather than
entire garments and fabrics,
are used in the tests. A high
speed propeller blade inside
the machine tosses the sam
ples being tested against the
machine sides, . which have
abrasive surfaces much like
very fine sandpaper.
This produces wear and
rubbing which would be com
parable to the wear and fric
tion found in clothes at the
elbows, knees, back of the
neck, or in the case of sheets
and blankets, all-over wear.
The machine is equipped
to hold water so that "washa
bility" properites of the fab
rics also may be tested.
Pythian Groups Announce

from '75 cents to $1 will be
exchanged. Refreshments will
be potluck of sandwiches, po
tato chips or relishes.
Pythian Sisters initiated
three new members at their
meeting last Tuesday evening.

The charter was draped in
honor of Mrs. Delia Myers.
Plans are being made for a
Christmas party, the date to
be announced, for the Knights
of Pythias, Pythian Sisters,
Sunshine Girls, Boy Scouts
and their families.
Approximately 14 members
were honored by a birthday
party planned by Mrs. Arnold
Motschenbacher, . Mrs. Ross
and Mrs. Offutt. '
The refresliment committee
for the evening was Mrs.
