Feeding the Family

Meat Gets Around
For centuries mince meat
has been highly prized in des
sert pies . . . and so it is today.
But today's homemaker also
reaches for the mince meat
jar to give aromatic and spicy
emphasis to other good things
like these:
Jiffy Ham Sauce: Simmer
1 Vi cups cranberry juice
cocktail or sherry with one
cup prepared, ready-to-use
mince meat for five minutes;
stir two teaspoons cornstarch
into another one-half cup
cranberry juice or sherry and
add to mince meat mixture.
Bring to a quick boil, stirring
constantly. Makes three cups
of sauce that will keep well
for serving hot or cold with
either hot or cold ham.
Minced Sweets. Here we
add prepared, ready-to-use
mince meat to sweet potatoes
for serving as stuffed sweet
potatoes. Bake good size
sweet potatoes or yams and
cut in two. Scoop out insides,
add salt, butter and some
mince meat and return to
sweet potato shells for quick
oven broiling topped with
marshmallows, if you like.
Bread Spread. Here is a
spread for bread, toast or
muffins. It's tremendously
popular with small fry. Blend
equal quatities of peanut but
ter and ready-to-use mince
meat; season with a few drops
of lemon juice or pineapple
juice, if desired.
Festire Prune Whip
Prune whips have been
popular ever since plums
have been dried and that goes
back a long time. Here is a
cranberry season variation
certain to be liked. Packaged
prunes and canned jellied
cranberries are very reason
able in price; good to have
around the house. For each
four servings:
Pit one cup cooked prunes,
press prunes and one cup jel
lied cranberry sauce through
sieve. Add dash of salt. Beat
two egg whites until stiff.
Beat fruit mixture into egg
whites, a small portion at a
time. Mixture will increase in
volume with beating. Fold in
one-fourth cup chopped nut
meats. Chill. Serve soon after
preparation with custard
sauce made from egg yolks
left over from whip.
Christmas Pudding
This festive holiday pud
ding recipe will be especially
welcome because it makes 15
servings for enjoyment hot
with hard sauce and cold with
warm sauce, if you're lucky
enough to have any left over,
V cup butter or margarine
cup sugar
3 eggs, separated
Vx pound ground suet
4 cup milk
2i cups sifted all-purpose
flour
Vi teaspoon each cinnamon,
cloves, nutmeg
i teaspoon baking powder
b teaspoon salt
2 cups pitted plumped prunes
Vi pound seedless raisins
1 8-ounce jar candied fruit
and peels
, V. cup prune juice
Cream together butter or
margarine and sugar. Separ
ate egg yolks and whites. Add
egg yolks to mixture and
beat well. Add suet and milk.
Sift together dry ingredients;
add to creamed mixture.
Chop prunes; add with raisins
and candied fruits to batter.
Add prune juice; mix well.
Beat egg whites until stiff;
fold gently into batter.
Pour into well greased pud
ding mold; cover and steam
three hours. Serve hot with
hard sauce. Garnish platter
with whole prunes filled with
hard sauce and perhaps top
ped by a piece of green ci
tron. Fruit Cake Freezing. Fruit
cakes may be stored in a
freezer, but not until they
have been well aged first. Be
sure they are carefully wrap
ped and aged long enough to
develop that full mellow flav
or. Fruit Cake Cutting. Well
aged fruit cakes, even those
with large pieces of fruit and
whole walnuts, almond or
Brazil nuts, should slice eas
ily; however, it always helps
to have the cake chilled first
and to use a very sharp knife.
Quick Fruit Cake Glaze. A
quick, simple fruit cake glaze
is easily accomplished by
bringing corn syrup to a full
rolling- boil and spreading it
lightly over the cake.

kets, there will be many a
bargain for budget minded

turkey and chicken forms
available. Turkey quarters,
for example, are a relatively
new and certainly very con
venient form of turkey for

dark meat, buy the drumstick

and enjoy the succulent white
breast slices..

of sabotage against a SAC

"Any attempt to molest
or impair SAC's retaliatory
capability wil be viewed as
a very serious aggressive act,"
Black said, because itvwould
mean the enemy had or was
about to launch ah attack and
wanted to keep SAC planes
on the ground.

Takeoff; Four Die
Denver-(UPD-A private air
plane crashed at the outskirts
of Denver during a takeoff
into a snowstorm Thursday
and four persons were killed.
The plane did not burn, but
witnesses said the bodies were
mutilated. Although the plane,
a Beechcraft Bonanza, crash
ed into a heavily populated
district, it did not hit any
homes.
Tentative identification of
the victims was made by
Combs Aircraft, Inc., where
the plane was serviced. The
victims were identified tenta
tively only as Joe Burkhardt,

Security Protection
Every available means of
security protection is used by
the Strategic Air Command,
including dogs and mechani
cal devices, but SAC relies
mainly on the men them
selves. The other methods are
employed only to bolster the
effectiveness of human
guards.
Time - tested and combat
proven war dogs have been
used by SAC for many years.
At present, some 1,500 of
these husky, finely - trained
German Shepherds are on
duty.
SAC recently changed the
methods of its penetration
teams, which formerly infil
trated SAC bases secretly to
test security measures.
While such methods were
largely effective, security
guard? were forced to deter
mine whether the invader
was real or imaginary, re
quiring hesitation which
could have been fatal under
real conditions. Now the
teams advertise their pres
ence. Anyone else risks being
shot.

Should sabotage occur at
any of the far - flung SAC
bases, command headquarters
would be notified within two
minutes. And since SAC men
believe enemy sabotage, if
and when it comes, will occur
simultaneously at all bases,
headquarters will have the
