Hollywood-tfPD - If Soviet
summit meetings are anything
like Russian press conferences
it' no wonder the interna
tional situation is suffering
from the bends.
This week a junketing del

guls and two actresses visited
Hollywood to get the lay of
glamourland. But they were
more interested in Disneyland
than movieland. .
. Still, thev aereed to a press

Russian and Hollywood films.
But first they had to hold
a private conclave to deter
mine what they'd talk about,
Hollywood's press corps cool

sians vakked it over. Occa
sionally a Russian head poked
out of the door, shouted some
thing in Russian and retreat

Explosive Babble
A travel-bureau translater
explained we could ask any
questions we desired, and that
they . would answer as best
they were able. '
First question "Why are you
in Hollywood?"
This set off an explosive
babble during which every
Russian discussed the knotty
query with his neighbor. Fin
ally, director Sergi Iutkevich
who proved most talkative,
answered solemnly, "We are
tourists." '
His fellow-travelers nodded
approval, though none spoke
English.
Next they were asked who
was the favorite American
performer in. Russia. It was a
bombshell. They shouted 21
different names, which shrank
to only two within a few min
utes.. Spokesmen Iutkevich
made it clear that Henry Fon
da, indeed, was the Russian
favorite."
But one of the acrtresses,
an elderly- Bette Davis type,
held out for Katherine Hep
burn until one of her associ
ates convinced her she meant
Audrey Hepburn. Once this
was settled, Iutkevich said,
"Henry Fonda and Audrey
Hepburn," which cheered the
actress considerably.
"What percentage of the 120
films you produce yearly have
a political theme?" was the
next question.
Lordy, you'd have thought
they'd : been; asked for the
Russian H-bombs secrets.
Russians Lose Interest
Half the Russians left their
chairs to discuss this one. The
translator looked pained and
resentful.
Again, Iutkevich came to
the rescue.
"Every picture made in
every country has some po
litical theme. It is a matter of
degree," he said, in the Rus
sian equivalent to "no com
ment." Obviously by now the Rus
sians had lost interest in the
conference. They began talk
ing to one another in loud
voices, paying not the slight
est heed to further questions.
In the ensuing ' confusion
Audrey Hepburn's name was
heard several times, but no
body paid much attention.
At last the translator thank
ed the press and we filed out
along with the Russians, one
of whom stopped on the side
walk to give a Russian post
card to k 10-year-old boy.
"It ain't autographed," the
youngster complained.

Mrs. M.R. The whole
town is talking about Lydia
Lydia R. They ought to
trust me.
Mrs. M.R. I recently learned
through an anonymous letter
that the whole town is talk
ing about my 16-year-old
daughter, Lydia.
When I went to make en
quiries I found it was true
that everyone was talking.
But Lydia claims it is an
ugly rumor spread by one
boy whose advances she re
pulsed.
My husband and I do not
know what to make of it
Lydia has always been a well-
behaved girl. The boys she
went out with seemed nice
and with only a few excep
tions she kept the deadline
we gave her for her return
home. She has cried and
cried and sworn that the
whole thing is a lie, but my
husband feels that where
there is smoke there is fire.
I am heartbroken over this.
.
Lydia R It is very unfair
that I should have to suffer
just because some cad was so
furious that he did not have
his own way. Plenty of girls
who have done the talking
did things I wouldn't dream
of doing.
I feel that my parents
ought to trust me and stand
by me. Instead they have
been worse than anybody.
They have gone around dig
ging for more dirt and em
barressed me so much I can't
hold up my head any longer.
The worst part of it is, that
as a result of all this, nobody
will go out with me. I'll nev
er be able to go out with the
nicer boys and girls in our
town. And I honestly don't
want to go out with the oth
ers. I feel like running away
or killing myself.
Trie Council A grave In
justice has been done Lydia
whether or not there was any
truth in' the original story
about her reputation. They
have aided and abetted in the
destruction of her reputation.
They have also destroyed her
faith and trust in them.
The vicious anonymous let
ter should never have seen
the light. If the M.R.'s had
any doubts about their daugh
ter's behavior they should
have watched her discreetly
or talked to her in a general
way about her attitudes and
about her friendships. She
should never have been
forced to ' defend herself
against such a foul attack.
. Our sympathy is 100 per
cent on Lydia's side, but we
feel that it is only right to
point to one loophole in her
story. It is unusual for a
"whole town" to credit the
word of a cad. A well
behaved girl usually estab
lishes the kind of reputation
that is not easily smeared.
She does not have to worry
about the vicious gossips.
However, there are nasty
individuals in every commu
nity and we believe that they
can make a fairly smoky sit
uation even when there is
no fire.
A great deal of damage has
been done here. A first step
in repairing it would be for
the M.R.'s is to acknowledge

Skin Divers To
Seek Submarine
Off Oregon Coast
Salem-UPD-A group of local
skin divers plans to search
the Pacific ocean off Seaside
for a Japanese submarine
they believe may have been
sunk during World War H.
The Salem Aqua Lung Club
says the exploration will be
"just ior fun" without expec
tation of gain. Members plan,
if they find a submarine, to
use cutting torches to see what
is inside. -
Although the 13th . Naval
district in Seattle' has report
ed it is not aware of any such
wreck, aqua-lung divers claim
they have seen a submarine
like object, in shallow water
at low tide.
The local group has about
20 members and was formed
this year. More than half of
the members are policemen
or f irement.
The instructor is Dave
Scott, former Los Angeles
salvage diver. Ross Cruzen is
president and the vice presi
dent is Gerald Hall. -
The only report of a Jap
anese submarie being off that
area during World War II was
in June of 1952 when shells
were fired at. Fort Stevens.
The' submarine is believed to
have escaped.
Hall said the club has pur
chased an $800 air compres
sor for the expedition. Plans
calls for the dive to take
place sometime this month
when tides are low and the
water calm.
It is believed by local club
members the submarine may
be in about 40 to 50 feet of
water at low tide.
