By United Press International
Federal mediators said to
day they were optimistic of
an early settlement in an 11-
day strike against Trans
World Airlines, but added the .
walkout may last a few more
days before major points are
resolved.
A mediator said agreement
had been reached on several
points during lengthy talk
and "we are chipping away
bit by bit" at the remaining
differences.
Negotiations in a strike
against a second major air car
rier, Eastern Airlines, remain
ed deadlocked.
However, Capt. Eddie Rick-
enbacker, chairman of East
ern, sought to crack the log
jam in the seven-day walk
out by proposing arbitration
of the line's dispute with
flight engineers.
Holiday Travelers Grounded
The strikes against the two
airlines grounded about one
third of the nation's commer.'
cial plane fleets during the
Thanksgiving holiday. Thou
sands of holiday travelers
ammed rail, bus and air ter
minals seeking alternate
transportation.
A strike against a third ma
jor airline loomed larger as
the Air Line Pilots Associa
tion said it would go to court
today in an effort to remove
legal blocks in its threatened
walkout against American
Airlines.
The association, represent
ing 1,500 American Airlines
pilots,. said they would ask
Federal Judge Frederick Van
Pelt Bryan in New York to
lift an injunction against the
strike which Was issued at
the request of the airlines.
Holiday Traffic
Toll Lower Than
Normal Week End
By United Press International
The nation s traffic fatalit
ies in the Thanksgiving Day
week end ran below the toll
for an ordinary week end of
the same duration at this
time of year, closing figures
showed today.
A United Press Internation
al count showed that between
6 p.m. Wednesday and mid
night Sunday, 438 persons
died in traffic accidents. Fires
took 48 lives, plane accidents
took five, and other accidents
killed 111 persons, for a total
of 602.
California Has 32
California had 32 auto
deaths; New York 28; Ala
bama 24; Pennsylvania 21;
Illinois 20; Michigan 19, and
Ohio and Virginia 18 each to
lead the list of states.
Rhode Island, Nevada and
Alaska reported no traffic
deaths in the holiday period.
The National Safety Coun
cil, saying that it does not re
gard the Thanksgiving holi
day as one calling for as
much travel as Christmas,
New Year's, Labor Day and
one or two others, issued no
advance estimate for Thanks
giving holiday deaths, but
noted that in an ordinary 102
hour week end period at this
time of year, about 470 per
sons would be killed in traffic.
The council had no immed
iate explanation for the traf
fic total being lower than nor
mal. A spokesman said that
almost nationwide bad weath
er may have kept many motor
ists off the roads.
In contrast, last Thanksgiv
ing United Press International
counted 554 traffic deaths in
a similar period.'

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (UP8
Harry Gross, one-time gamb

was held for arraignment to
day as a fugitive from Cali
fornia where he is wanted on
grand larceny charges.
Gross, 44, was arrested with
two companions near her
Saturday and, at a hearing
Sunday, refused to waive ex
tradition to California. How
ever, District Attorney Ray
mond Baratta said he will
move to have Gross turned
over to Los Angeles authori
ties as soon as possible.
Gross was arrested in New
York City in 1951 as the king-'
pin of a $20 million a year
bookmaking operation. In
vestigators quoted him as say
ing he paid police $11 million
a year to protect his ring. But
Gross refused to testify against
18 policemen accused of
shielding his vast operation
and the charges against them
were dropped.
Gross served four years of
a 12-year term on charges of
conspiracy and bookmaklnf . .
