flexible military potential that no less
than four measures have been proposed
in Congress to make special provision
for Federal aid in building the ships.
The bills were introduced by House
Majority Leader John W. McCormack
of Massachusetts and Rep. John H. Ray
of New York. If enacted into law, they
will authorize sale of the two ships by
the Government to Sea Coach for
$70,000,000 each, about half the cost of
building them, or a 50 percent subsidy.
Each of the 2,750 cabins will be air
conditioned and have a television set.
Both Congressional sponsors have re
peatedly urged immediate action, and
13 AFL-CIO maritime union affiliates
publicly endorsed the superliners be
fore the House Committee on Merchant
Marine and Fisheries as recently as
July. But so far nothing has actually
been done that will permit laying of
the ships' keels.

' of foreign action is gathering
momentum from several direc
tions. Along with the flood of mail
pouring onto Cantor's desk from all
over the world in quest of large-scale
reservations aboard the superliners has
come, almost inevitably, inquiries and
offers from foreign shipyards to build
the great vessels abroad for less. Ja
pan is in the running with both feet.
So is Holland.
Late last Spring, in fact, the head of
Verolme United Shipyards biggest in
the Netherlands came here to seek an
agreement with Cantor to let him tackle
the project for an over-all price of, not
$135,000,000, but $85,000,000 per ship. In
addition, said Cornelius Verolme, he
would seek for Cantor a Dutch govern
ment loan to cover 80 percent of the
construction cost of both liners.
As of now, if Congress doesn't pass
the necessary enabling legislation soon,
Cantor feels he won't have much choice
but to give the job to Verolme or some
other foreign shipbuilder.
That is because inroads on his world
beating idea are already being threat
ened by some old hands at world-beating
on the high seas the British. They
have cottoned to Cantor's scheme so
enthusiastically that plans are afoot to
get Crown aid in financing a 95,000-ton,
single-class British superliner which
would carry 9,000 passengers 3,000
more than Cantor's ships across the
Atlantic at 35 knots in less than 4
days at competitive prices and with
similarly generous accommodations.
Nearest thing to either the British or
U.S. superliner plans isn't very near,
price-wise, but does provide some idea
of the kind of reception a $50 fare can
expect. Early this Summer the only
new passenger ship company since
World War II, American Banner Lines,
put into tourist operation from New
York to Zeebrugge the converted
Badger Mariner, renamed the Atlantic.
A commodious, air-conditioned, up-to-the-minute
ship, the Atlantic has 860
tourist-class cabins and 40 first-class.
The revealing thing about the Atlan
tic operation, even after only a few
months, is that it sold out from the first
and there's no letup in sight. The 40
first-class cabins range to $335 one way,
and the tourist rate varies from a top
of $220 to an off-season minimum of
$191.50. And Cantor contends that if
people will go for even a slight reduc
tion in ocean travel fares, they will
overwhelm a facility that will transport
them in comfort for $50 apiece.
