Continental Courtesy. While traveling in Holland several years ago, we
stopped at a restaurant near Amsterdam. A young Dutch couple was
leaving as we entered and we asked if the food was good.
The man said, "No, we were disappointed in it But if you re traveling
north, we can show you an
excellent place."
He led us to a small town
about 15 miles down the
road from Amsterdam and
pointed out a hotel, telling us
it was famed for its food.
Upon thanking them, we
discovered they had driven
15 miles out of their way
just to show us a good place
to eat. With gasoline 38
cents a gallon in Holland,
it was an unusual gesture of
good will to American tour

should be written by children.
Recently, while waiting in line at an ice-cream stand, I noticed two
boys, about 7 and 2. The older was holding tightly to his little brother,
who was announcing emphatically to all the world, "I want vanilla. I
want vanilla."
Unfortunately the vanilla machine had broken down and, thinking how
my own 2-year-old would react to a crisis like that, I wondered how the
older boy would handle the situation. Without flinching, he ordered two
strawberry cones and handed one to his little brother.
"Here you are," he said cheerfully, "pink vanilla!" Mrs. Ralph

More Than Lip Service. One day years ago, when farm animals were a vital
part of a farmer's assets, my father heard a group of men expressing
sympathy for a farmer whose mule had died. This was considered a
serious loss for any family. One of the group reached in his pocket and
brought out his wallet. He said, "I'm sorry $5. How much are you

Drop In Any Time! Back-yard swimming pools are becoming quite popular,
but there's a great difference among some of the people who own them.
Recently, we drove past a particularly beautiful home, where a pool
was being completed, but in front this
forbidding notice had been prominently
posted: "No Lookers. Private Property.
Keep Moving."
In striking contrast was the notice at
another under-construction pool at a more
modest home. Neighbors told us that the
owners had been saving for years to build
it, and when it was nearly completed they
announced on a sign before their house:
We're all so very happy, folks!
Though it isn't a girl or boy,
You're all invited to inspect
Uur latest pride and joy!
