Farm Prices Down,
Costs At New High
Washington (CPU Farm
prices declined slightly while
far production costs inched
upward to a new all-time high
in the month ended Nov. 15,
the agricultural department
reported Friday.
Most price changes during
the month were relatively
small. Primarily responsible
for the decline in the index
of prices received by farmers
were lower prices for oranges,
hogs, cotton, corn, and to
bzacco. Seasonably higher
prices for some fresh veget
ables, potatoes, apples, and
milk were only partially off
setting. pven with the overall de
cline, mid-November prices
received by farmers were
nearly 4 per cent above a year
earlier.
Farm costs, led by higher
prices for new automobiles,
kicked the prices-paid index
to 308 per cent of the 1910-14
bas period. The mid-November
prices-paid index was up
one-third of one per cent from
mid-October. The November
index was 3 per cent higher
than a year ealier.
The prices-received index
now has dropped for two con
secutive months, and the
prices-paid index has risen
three consecutive months.
The prices-receievd index
for mid-Novemebr was 2ol
per cent of the base period,
down four-tenths of 1 Per
cent from mid-October
BLOOD PIONEER DIES
Baltimore-CPB-Dr. Bertram
M. Bernheim, 78, a surgeon
considered a pioneer in blood
transfusion work, died Friday.
He was associate professor
emeritus of surgery at Johns
Hopkins medical school and
author of "Blood Transfusion.

as," published in 1917 when
blood transfusion was a rel
atively new concept.

ville, a small town near here,
was killed Friday when a car
he was dismantling slipped off
a jack and crushed him.
Lowden's parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Glen Lowden, became!
worried when he didn't show
up for dinner. Upon investi
gating they found that his old
car had slipped off its short
handle jack and had fallen
on his neck and part of his
chest.
He was dead on arrival at
Josephine General hospital
here. ,

Drivers Licenses
Suspended Listed
Salem-The Department of
motor vehicles has released
names of 561 drivers whose
licenses were ordered sus
pended during the period be
ginning Nov. 17 and ending
Nov. 21.
Length of suspension varies,
depending on charges in
volved, recommendation of
court, discretionary action by
the department or require
ments of Oregon law. The de
partment said some of the lic
enses involving financial re
sponsibility and court recom
mendations may have been re
instated after suspension was
ordered.
The departmet warned driv
ers that the penalty for driv
ing while suspended is a jail
sentence of no less than two
days and up to six months,
and there may be imposed a
fine up to $500. Under lic
ensing procedures,- this will
also result in an additional
year of suspension.

Meter Maid Tags
At Parade Voided
Portland-IUPD - The many
motorists who were tagged
during Friday's Fairy Tale
parade here by meter maids
can have their fines written
off, according to William D
Conner, head of the meter
maid division.
Conner said that motorists
who received tickets from
meter maids can bring them
to the Governor building,
room 411, and the tickets will
be torn up. Or they can mail
them into the meter maid di
vision with a note of explana
tion and they will be torn up.
Meter maids in Portland
aroused the ire of many mot
orists during the parade when
cars were tagged for double
parking and overparking.
City police had directed the
cars off the route of the pa
rade and into the parking
positions.
"It was all a mixup," Con
ner said, "They (the meter
maids) didn't realize the pa
trolmen were directing traffic."
