Dangers From Smoking
The United States Public
Health Service has just re
ported that the -death rate for
smokers was
32 per cent
higher than
the same rate
non - smokers.
This conclu
sion came
from results
of a study of
nearly 200,000
U. S. veterans
Dr Aivarer reported:, o n
by Dr. Harold F. Dorn.
The death rate from all
causes in smokers was 16 per
thousand as against 13.1 per
thousand for non-smokers. 1
don't see how anyone is going
to laugh this off. As in pre
vious studies, so in this one,
the death rate of the heavy
cigarette-smoker was higher
than that of pipe and cigar
smokers. Persons who smoked
only cigarettes had a death
rate 58 per cent higher than
that for non-smokers.
The death - rate from lung
cancer among the cigarette
smokers was 10 times higher
than that for non-smokers.
Other research workers have
found that the death-rates for
those who smoke more than
40 cigarettes a day are much
higher than similar rates for
those who smoke less than 10
cigarettes a day. Also, as
others have found, the death
rate for cigar and pipe smok
ers is not significantly higher
than that for non-smokers. Ap
parently, it is the inhaling of
smoke that causes most of
the trouble. The amount of

Diseases of Heart
The deaths of nearly two
thirds of the smokers came
from diseases of the heart,
the blood vessels, and the kid
neys. Among cigarette smok
ers, the death rate from cor
onary heart disease was 63
per cent higher than for non
smokers. Many men who have smok
ed two or three packages of
cigarettes a day for years ask
if it would do them any good
to quit now, and the evidence
indicates that it would. It
would help some. Interesting
ly, the cigarette smokers have
higher death rates from bron
chitis, pleurisy and emphy
sema (dilation of the tiny air
cavities in the lungs), I know
a family in which for four
generations nearly everyone
lived past 65 and only one
man did enough smoking
worth talking about. He was
a chain smoker, and he was
the one who died at 35, with
in three days after a pneu
monia hit him.
