Medford Blue Star Mothers
were entertained recently by
Mrs. Reimer Peterson at her
home on Beatty street. Mrs.
Edward Silton, 324 Van
couver street, was welcomed
as a prospective member.
Hospjtal chairman, Mrs.
Fred Middlebusher, reported
that she, with Mrs. William
Naylor, Mrs. Ethel Severson
and Mrs. F. B. Gleaves, con
ducted the monthly birthday
party for the wheel chair pa
tients at the Camp White do
miciliary on Friday.
Plans were made to help
with donations for the an
nual Christmas party for. the
men at Camp White.
Several members reported
they had greatly enjoyed their
recent tour through the
various departments in the
hospital and were well im
pressed with the modern and
complete facilities and equip
ment in the medical, - dental
and physical therapy depart
ments. Mrs. Helen Watson and
Mrs. Middlebusher reported
on attending the orientation
classes held recently in the
Elks club room on Central
avenue. Twenty-two depart
ment heads explained the
functions of their particular
departments.
Mrs. James Cech reported
on a recent visit she made in
Roseburg at the Veteran's
hospital and with the Rose
burg Blue Star mothers.
Plans were discussed for the
next party for the wheel
chair members at the domi
ciliary held Friday.
The annual Christmas party
for the club will be held at
the home of Mrs. William
Naylor on New Ray road in
Central Point.
President George Washing
ton signed the bill to estab
lish the Navy in 1794.

Alaska's new state legislature
continued to shape up as a
firm Democratic body yester
day as returns from Tuesday's
elections filtered in from out
lying areas.
In only one district out of
the 24 political subdivisions
was a Republican elected to
the state senate. Republicans
were elected to the house of
represntativs from four dis
tricts. 1u of the House seats stil
weres not settled pending the
count of absentee ballots.

Reporter Plays Cinderella
With Millions in Diamonds

to play Cinderella is to visit
Harry Winston's.
Here, a girl without a dime
toward a diamond is free to
dream, to admire, even to try
on some of the world's most
fabulous jewels. I spent a
morning doing same, just to
see what all was behind those
doors at the House of Win
ston, which the other day gave
the million dollar Hope dia
mond to the Smithsonian In
stitution. It takes nerve, unless you're
rich, to walk through the
heavy, iron grill doors of the
sedate gray stone house, once
the "home of a countess, now
identified ' only by a small
bronze plaque on the front.
But nobody stopped me. No
armed guards crowded around
to check my credentials, one
press card or my checkbook.
I might have been a custom
er! The whole atmosphere was
so casual, I asked Don Car
nevale, a vice president, if
thievery of some of that ice
wasn't a simple thing. Who
would miss a few small stones
from a collection insured at
well above 25 million dolars?
Compicated Alarm System
"We'll just X-ray you as
you leave," Carnevale laugh
ed. I iound later that although
there was little obvious secur
ity, the house has a complicat
ed communications and alarm
system, which can call the
cops, both city and private, in
a hurry. And every gem,
whether worth $50 or $500,
000, is carefully photographed
and inventoried.
Carnevale gave me the
grand tour of all six floors to
show that the Winston busi
ness is, if I may say so, many
faceted. Here, some 250 em
ployees design and finish
jewels for both the wholesale
and retail trade - for custom
ers ranging from Egypt's ex
iled King Farouk who bought
the Star of the East diamond
-94.8 carats-to a mail order
house which buys thousands
of one-half and one-fourth
carat engagement rings in a
single order.
Bernard De Haan, chief of
the cutting department and
the fourth generation of his
family in the jewelry busi
ness, said that a lot of carats
-sometimes 60 per cent of the
original stone-are lost in the
cutting. He swiped his hand
across a counter-"once a dia
mond, now a carbon smudge,"
he said.
Farouk Siill Owes
Carnevale pointed to an
assembly counter littered with
sketches and small white
packets of gems and casually
commented, "about five mil
lion dollars there."
I began to feel equally
casual about all that glitter
until Winston took me into
his second floor office, wifh
its period furniture and cry
stal chandeliers, and said:
"There are still plenty left,
even with the Hope gone."
"Farouk still owes me for
the Star of the East and some
other stones . . . about $1,
150,000 all told. The Star of
the East has not been found,"
said the jeweler who also once
owned the Jonker. The Jon
ker,' one of the six largest
diamonds ever found, weighed
726 carats before it was cut
into 12 stones and Winston
said "number eight, the Mar
quise, just came back to me
the other day."

dress it, Martin Rywell's
"Wild Game Cook Book"
(Pioneer Press) tells how to
cook the animal.
"The meat is white, tender
and flavorful," writes the au
thor. It may be pot-roasted
or broiled.
Not interested in skunk?
Maybe you'd rather eat crow.
This is described as "good
eating"-if you like your meat
dark, dry and slightly gamey.
Any not-so-wise owls which
get in the way of a. hunter
may end up in fricassee or
barbecue, provided the diner
goes for gamey flavor.
Woodchuck is another dish
which the gun expert recom
mended. If there are none
around, you can wait for
groundhog day in February
when the little animal sticks
his head out of his burrow
to signal an early or late

Thrifty homemakers may
go for Camp's own recipe for
duck soup.
Quarter 3 duck carcasses
and place in a large kettle
with cup diced tomatoes,
2 stalks celery, 3 diced medi
um onions, 1 diced large car
rot, Vi teaspoon tarragon, M
teaspoon grated lemon peel,
1 minced clove garlic, Vfe cup
chopped cabbage, 2 sprigs
parsley, 1 can chicken con
somme, 2 quarts water, and
salt and pepper to taste.
Bring to boil, reduce to
simmer, cover and simmer 45
minutes. Remove carcasses,
carve off meat ahd set aside.
Return carcasses to kettle,
cover and simmer VA hours.
Strain through cheesecloth,
skim off fat, and place stock
in smaller kettle. Dice duck
meat in Vfc-inch cubes, add to
stock, bring to a boil and
serve.
