Reed College Bomb
Threats Admitted
Portland -EPD- Police said
today a 45-year-old merchant
patrolman has admitted mak
ing at least three of five tele
phoned bomb threats to Reed
College here" since Nov. 12.
Howard W. Eggleston was
arrested on a charge of threat
ening to commit a felony and
was released on $1000 bail.
Eggleston told officers that
students at the school had in
sulted him and "tried to run
me down with their cars . . ."
Police received calls on
Nov. 12 and 18 saying "the
mess hall at Reed College is
going to be bombed this after
noon at 5:30 or 6." Another
threat was made that a bomb
would go off in Doyle hall
on the campus, police said.
Police eliminated students
as suspects because warnings
referred to "mess hall" in
stead of "commons," the name
students use for their eating
place.

(Continued from Page 1)
At this point he raised his
voice and said, "we are, there
fore, in a position of acting
the same way as the West
acted, namely, they disregard
ed the Potsdam and other
agreements."
"The best way to liquidate
the present cancerous tumor
is recognition of the existing
systems and setting up a new
city. If the majority of the
people of West Berlin prefer
capitalism, let them have it."
"Western observers in Bonn
predicted the Big Three and
West Germany will firmly re
ject Russia's bold new move
to oust the West out of Berlin."

That, said one of the casino

But a Baptist minister?
Tulloch, 50, a preacher for

The first reaction here was
that the Russians and their
East German satellites were
merely trying to set the stage
for takeover of West Berlin's
2,200,000 free citizens.
Six Months Given
The note said if no agree
ment was reached within six
months the Soviet Union and
the GDR (East Germany)
would put the measures into
effect.
Russia said contacts be
tween its armed forces repre
sentatives and Western mili
tary men in Berlin would be
ended.
The note criticized the West
for violating the Potsdam
Agreement and failing to sign
a peace treaty and reaffirmed
Soviet willingness to partici
pate in a peace treaty with all
of Germany.
But it said the absence of a
peace treaty "in no way justi
fies attempts to preserve the
occupation regime in any part
of Germany."
No Incorporation
The note accused the West
of making Berlin into a base
for subversive activity against
East Germany and the Soviet
Union.
In a separate note to West
Germany the Russians said
the Soviet does not plan to in
corporate West Berlin into
East Germany "nor does it
wish to make any territorial
or other gains."
"There can be no question
of mechanical unification of
the two parts of the city, if
only for the reason that the
Brandenburg Gate divides two
different ways of life."
The note said the Russians
wquld respect the wishes of
West Berliners to live under
a capitalistic system and was
willing to undersign, together
with other states, the guaran
tees for the independence of
the free city of West Berlin. .
It said the United Nations
could help observe these guar
antees though it would be
"necessary to come to an
agreement in some form or
other with the GDR concern
ing the assurance of unham
pered communications of the
free city with the rest of the
world. . ."
Wednesday and he told this
story.
Tulloch, who at the time
of his disappearance was pas
tor of the First Baptist Church
of Sabetha, Kan., said he gave
up the ministry because "all
the church people are always
harping at other churches."
Divorce Action Pending
Adding to his decision to
get away from it all, he said,
was a pending divorce action
involving his wife and mother
of his two children.
"I probably in the past
preached against the ills of
gambling," Tulloch said, "but
this job has given me the best
chance I've ever had to study
human nature.
"In that sense, I think this
is one of the most important
jobs I've ever had."
He said he plans to remain
here and will not return to
his family now living in Kan
sas City.
Tulloch, who attends church
every Sunday here, has been
working at the Golden Gate
club, a small downtown ca
sino, since Oct. 3.
Tulloch said he arrived
here with about $20 in his
pocket and decided to seek a
shill job when a waitress in
a restaurant told him one was
open.
Casino operators said they
had to teach him how to gam
ble. They pay him $48 a week.
Tulloch was married to his
wife, Nellie, for 25 years.
They have a son, Loren, 25,
and a daughter, 19.
Since arriving here he has
hired an attorney who has
written Mrs. Tulloch asking
for a divorce and seeking to
give her power of attorney.
He said he uses his spare
time on research for a text
book he plans to write called
"Practical Thinking for Chris
tian People."
"We're very happy with
him," operators of the casino
said. "He's a good shill de
spite the fact he's had no ex
perience."

Breaks Tradition
Tokyo -(UPD- Japan's Crown
Prince Akihito became en
gaged today to a pretty young
commoner in a love match
that broke 2,618 years of tra
dition and brought joy to the
nation.
The Imperial Household
Council announced after a 42
minute meeting that Akihito,
24, will marry 24-year-old
Michiko Shoda, Catholic-educated
daughter of a wealthy
but non-royal flour mill ex
ecutive. The 38-word announcement
shattered a tradition that be
gan in 660 B.C., when the
legendary Emperor Jimmu,
descendant of the sun goddess
Amatersasu, ascended the
throne of Japan. No common
er ever has reigned as em
press of Japan.
It was a love match. Aki
hito met and fell in love with
Michiko two summers ago on
a tennis court at a fashion
able mountain resort. He
fought the traditionalists and
insisted he be allowed to se-J
lect his own wife.
Wedding plans were not
immediately announced but
there was every indication the
marriage would come between
May and December next year,
possibly on Dec. 23, the
prince's 26th birthday.
Akihito's friends, teachers
and high government officials
said there was no doubt this
was a true love match which
had no parallel in Japanese
history.
