The first meeting of the
Talent Nimble Fingers sewing
club was held Nov. 18 at the
home of our leader, Mrs.

leader, Paulette Creel.
We have decided to have
our meetings on the second
Monday of every month. Our
next meeting will be Dec. 8,
at the home of Paulette Creel.

ed that Paulette would bring
refreshments next week. Judy
Bagley will give a demonstra
tion on how to press seams at
the next meeting.

gist) whom he can find in his
city or in a nearby medical
center, and then he should
take the advice given; also,
he should stay with the spe
cialist as long as the man feels
that the condition is serious
and requires watching.
Ovarian Extracts Rarely, If
Ever, Produce Cancer
I was just reading "and un
usually fine article by a very
able and sensible professor of
obstetrics and gynecology at
the Uriiversity of California
School of Medicine in Los An
geles. He is Dr. Daniel G.
Morton. He says, "It is my
belief that estrogens are dis
tinctly useful . . . and that us-
ualy the oral preparations
(taken by mouth) are the most
appropriate and the most use
ful." He goes on to say that
many physicians refuse to
give ovarian extracts to wom
en who are suffering from the
terrible flushes of the meno
pause, but he does not feel
that this is right.
He points out, as I have of
ten done, that the amount of
estrogen given to a woman
is infinitesimal, in comparison
to the doses that were once
given to tiny mice in order
to produce cancer. He goes
on to say, "As a matter of
fact, I know of no authenti
cated instance in which can
cer has resulted from estro
gen administration in humans,
even though large doses have
been given to some women
over long periods of time.
Even larger doses adminis
tered to monkeys have failed
to produce cancer." He advis
es the use of stilbestrol (by
mouth) in doses of 0.5 mgs. a
day for six out of the seven
days of the week. This is ex
actly the dose that I have al
ways prescribed.
It always distresses meto
see women who have just
had a hysterectomy or a cur
ettement simply because they
had begun to bleed again af
ter the menopause. So far as
I could see, they had started
bleeding igain because they
had been given huge doses
of ovarian extract, doses 20
times larger than anything
that most gynecologists would

Salem-(DPD-A new contract
between the State Board of
Control and the Forestry De
partment involving the forest
camp where some 60 state
penitentiary inmates are as
signed has been approved by
the board.
The new agreement pro
vides that the penitentiary
will pay all the operating
costs of the Tillamook burn
camp and furnish food.
The wage paid to convicts
will be increased from $1 to a
maximum of $2 a day. In
mates at the camp are allowed
to spend $15 a month in the
commissary except in Decem
ber when they are allowed to
spend $25.
The new agreement calls
for inmates to be used in
fighting forest fires. They will
be trained by the Forestry de
partment in the latest tech
niques and furnished with
equipment.
