lor, the Minneapolis Lakers,
All-Am erica rookie from Se
attle university, today re
placed scoring champion
George Yardley of the Detroit
Pistons as the National Bas
ketball association's top point-maker-something
none of the
other pros have been able to
do in almost a year.
The Laker freshman took
over the lead with a three
game outburst of 87 points.
That gave him a total of 382
points in 15 games through
last Sunday. Yardley, the
balding, former Stanford uni
versity ace, has scored 365
points through the same num
ber of games with the Detroit
Pistons.
Not since 1955, when Fran
wv. nlavins with Baltimore
and Milwaukee in his first
pro season, made a close run
for the scoring lead has a
freshman been able to crack
the veteran clique of scoring
pros.

Shows Versatility
Just to show his versatility,
Balor also is among the
leaders in two other impor
tant depardtments-second in
rebounds to Bill Rfcssell of the
Boston Celtics (242 to 231)
and third in assists to Dick
McGuire of the Pistons and
Carl Braun of the New York
Knickerbockers. ,
Bob Pettit of the St. Louis
Hawks held onto his per-game
scoring lead with a 28.7 aver
age and moved up to third
behind Yardley and Baylor in
total points scored. Paul Ari-
zin .of the Philadelphia War
riors remained second on the
average basis and fourth over
all, while Cincinnati's Jack
Tyman, who tied the season s
single game high of 45 points
against the Celtics last Wed
nesday, moved into fifth
place.
All the other leaders held
on to their top seats. Kenny
Sears of the Knicks canned
13 of 19 attempts to run his
shooting accuracy mark to
.340; Bill Sharman of the Cel
tics ran his free throw record
to 43 of 46 for a .935 mark;
and Russell increased his re
bound total to 242 in 10 games
for a 24.2 average.

SILKY DISAPPOINTMENT
Miami, Fla. -41TD- Charles
J. McLennan and Frank E.
Kilroe, two of the nation's
outstanding racing secretar
ies, rate Silky Sullivan the
biggest disappointment of the
year. Silky, everybody's "fav
orite" for the top three-year-old
events last spring because
of his fantastic come-from-be-hind

in the Kentucky Derby and
8th. in the Preakness.
Michigan
Man Wins
Track Title
East Lansing, Mich. -UPD-Forddy
Kennedy got an assist
from an early snow storm and
today he's v Michigan State's
first NCAA cross country
champion.
The Spartans have a wealth
of NCAA team titles they
made it seven Monday but
they never could quite take
the individual crown. Warren
Druetzler finished second in
1950 and Henry Kennedy,
Forddy's older brother, was
second in 1955.
Forddy had led MSU to the
IC4A and Big Ten titles ear
lier this season, placing first
in the Eastern meet and edged
,by Iowa's Deacon Jones in the
Big Ten. Now came the big
one.
"Wouldn't it be nice if it
rained or snowed," Kennedy
said Sunday night, "because'if
it does, it would help me."
He got his wish a two-inch
snowfall that had turned
slushy by race time at the ap
proximately four-mile route
over Michigan State's new
golf course. It was made to
order for him and he won by
40 yards.
It was an all-Michigan day.
Central Michigan's Ed Van
derheuvel was second and
Western Michigan's Art Ever-
sole was third. Western was
second in the team totals and
Central Michigan was 10th.
In addition, it gave Spartan
Coach Fran Dittrich, an MSU
harrier and broad jumper in
the mid 1930's, a grand slam
of cross country in his first
year as head coach.' Dittrich
was long-time assistant to
Karl Schaldeman who retired
earlier this year. -
Notre Dame, the defending
champion, fell to fourth place.
Max Truex, individual titlist
from Southern Cal in 1957,
was ineligible this year.
The Spartans finished with
79 points and Western Michi
gan had 104. Army was third
with 111 and the Irish three
points up on that. Iowa State
was fifth at 125. The second
five were Kansas, 144; Indi
ana, 173; Iowa, 202; Arkansas,
239 and Central Michigan 240.
Negative Ions
May Be Help for
Variety of Ills
Bloomfield, N. J.-(UPD-Relief
for a variety of ills including
asthma, hay fever, arthritis
and tental depression may
result from successful experi
ments with negative ions, re
search scientists said today.
Westinghouse Electric
Corp. scientists here were
conducting experiments with
ultraviolet lamps which pro
duce sizable quantities of
negative air ions, according
to E. G. G. Arnott research
director for the lamp division
of Westinghouse.
Dr. Rudolph A. Naby, West
inghouse manager of ultra
tinghouse manager of ultra
violet development, said a
survey of findings by re
searchers indicate that when
people or animals are sub
jected to negative air ions
there was a definite improve
ment in comfort.
Woundi Htal Rapidly
"Patients with hay fever,
asthma and sinusitis found re
lief, wounds healed more rap
idly anJ. arthritis and rheu
matism were reduced," Dr.
Nagy said.
He said that on the other
hand, when the air is charged
with positive air ions, "there
is a noticeable increase in dis
comfort." However, Nagy warned it
was too early to say that by
producing negative ions ill
ness and mental depression
could be eliminated. He said
evidence indicated beyond a
reasonable doubt that ions do
play an important role.

Fog, Smog Cut
Visibility in LA.
Los Angedes-ttJPD-More than
100 autos were involved in
crashes Monday when a thick
fog bank and dense smog
combined to reduce visibility
to less than half a mile.
One person was killed and
10 others injured in the traf
fic accidents.
More smog was predicted
for today.
Most of the traffic mishaps
occurred early in the day
when the fog was at its worst.
But as the day progressed
smog became worse and add
ed to motorists' troubles by
causing their eyes to water.

Gasoline Prices
Drop at Portland
Portland-(UPD-Prices of reg
ular gasoline were down to
23.9 cents a gallon at some
service stations here today as
the price war continued.
About a dozen stations on
southeast 82nd avenue sold
regular gasoline at the new
low price. The general pattern
at other stations was 26.9
cents per 'gallon for regular.
J. S. Baker, business man
ager of the Oregon Gas Deal
ers Association, said he ex
pected the lower prices in
fringe areas "to become gen
eral" and added they may go
even lower.
