California is in the Rose
Bowl but take the word of
a dazed coach Pete Elliott, it's
hard to believe.

Winner in '
Turkey Run
Dick Chambers, Grants
Pass, won the fifth annual
motorcycle turkey run of
White's Cycle Center,
Chambers took first place
trophy with 990 points. Don
ald Foose, Medford, and Ray
Tierce, each with 975 points,
were second and third place
trophy getters respectively.
First tabulations showed a
three-way tie for second and
a two-way knot for-third. Ties
were broken and trophies
went to Foose and Tierce.
Algeo Gels Turkey
Jim Algeo, Medford, took
" the turkey scramble after the
cross-country and won a 13-
pound bird donated by Phil
lips Poultry. The scramble
was held before a big crowd
at Barnesburg hill where the
run ended.
Marvin Harper, Crescent
City, Calif., was high out-of-state
rider, and Guy Barker
and Jim Wyatt entered from
Redding, Calif. Local compe
tition held them down. There
were 32 entries in the 62-mile
rvent.
Richard Hall afid Vic Dal
laire, Medford, riding new
two -speed Cushman Eagles,
were last in scoring but fin
ished the run.
Plans are underway for a
bigger event in 1959.
HOCKEY
NATIONAL LEAGUE
United Press International
Even Phil Watson was will
ing to admit today that Terry
Sawchuk of the Detroit Red
Wings "is the best goalie in
the National Hockey league. '
"He's playing goal like the
Sawchuk of old, and that's
for sure," the New York
Rangers' coach admitted after
the Red Wines handed the
Broadway skaters their first
defeat in seven games, s-.
Sunday, night at Madison
Sauare Garden.
Terry fanned on a rebound
shot by Andy Bathgate in the
second period that gave New
York a 1-0 lead. It was Bath
gate's 14th goal of the season
and his 11th in the Raneers'
last 11 games. However, Saw
chuk blanked Bathgate and
his mates the rest of the way,
"winding up with 26 saves.
In other eames. the Boston
Bruins blanked the Montreal
Canadiens, 2-0, and the To
ronto Maple Leafs tied the
Chicago Black Hawks, 3-3.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
United Press International
Harry Lumley, who was an
outstanding big-league goalie
for many years, is showing
his old form in the American
Hockey League.
The 32 -year -old veteran
kicked out 23 shoes Sunday
night as the Providence Reds
blanked the Rochester Ameri
cans, 4-0, at Providence.
Lumley was also in the nets
Saturday night when the
Reds turned back the Cleve
land Barons, 2-0. The twin
whitewashings enabled the
Rhode Islanders to vacate the
AHL cellar.
In other Sunday night
games, the Hershey Bears
handed the Springfield In
dians their third loss in as
many nights, 5-3, and the
surging Cleveland Barons nip
The Golden Bears, who lost
nine out of 10 games last sea
son, earned the Pacific Coast
conference assignment against
Iowa Saturday when they
eked out a 16-15 victory over
arch-rival Stanford.
At the same time, other
throne pretenders were hav
ing their troubles. Southern
California was held to a 15-15
deadlock by UCLA, Oregon
State was knocked out of con
tention by Oregon, 20-0, and
Washington State had to come
from behind in the last half
to beat Washington 18-14.
So California, with a 6-1
conference record and 7-3 for
the year went from last to
first place in the league in a
matter of one season and on
the wings of Elliott's split-T.
Coach Surprised
Elliott apparently had no
such reversal of form in
mind, because he has no Rose
Bowl plans yet.
"We have no idea when we
will restart practice for the
Rose Bowl," said the hand
some mentor. "I know a few
days good rest will do our
boys good. We will have a
get-together session today.
That's as far as my planning
goes.
"I don't even know how
many practice days we are
allowed before the Rose Bowl
game-or when we will leave
for the Southland.
'I haven't asked to see the
University of Iowa game pic-
tures-and they haven't asked
to see ours.
"I don't have any idea how
tough Big Ten football was
this year. I will say that there
was good balance in both the
Pacific Coast conference and
the Big Ten."

Spaniards
Triumph in
Golf Meet
By LEO H. PETERSEN
UPI Sports Editor
Mexico City -(UPD- The pres
tige which the United States
used to hold in the golf world
was down-graded again today
after a Spaniard won the In
ternational trophy, and Ire
land the Canada Cup,- in the
sixth international matches.
Angel Miguel, a black-haired
long-shot who was playing
with his kid brother Sebas
tian, as the team from Spain,
won the individual champion
ship and the $1,000 which
went with it when he beat 45-year-old
Harry Bradshaw of
Ireland on the third extra
hole after they had tied at
286 over the regulation 72
holes.
Snead Withdraws
Angel sank a 20-foot putt
to win it, but his individual
triumph was not enough to
carry Spain to victory in the
team championship.
Bradshaw and his team
mate, Christy O'Connor came
in first with a total of 579
three strokes better than the
Miguel brothers.
The United States lost out
all around. It lost a good shot
at the team title when Sam
Snead had to withdraw Sat
urday morning at the start of
the third round because of an
ailing back.
And Ben Hogan, the cap
tain of the U.S. team, could
do no better than 36-38 74,
two over par, in the fourth
round Sunday which tied him
at seventh place with Gary
Player of South Africa with
an aggregate of 291 five
strokes off the pace.
GIANTS INJURED
New York (UPD Quarter
backs Charlie Conerly and
Don Heinrich suffered slight
injuries in the New York
Giants' 30-0 victory over the
Washingtown Redskins Sun
day but each is expected to
see action next week" against
the Philadelphia Eagles.
