GP Chamber to Endorse Festival
Grants Pass-The board of
directors of the Grants Pass
and Josephine County Cham
ber of Commerce last week
endorsed the campaign to
raise funds for construction
of a new Elizabethean theater
for the Oregon Shakespearean
Festival at Ashland.
Festival officials pointed out
that the annual event has
brought more than 800,000
visitors from every state and
many foreign countries to
southern Oregon.
Charles M. Packer, presi
dent of the chamber, said the
Festival has been offered loca
tions in Santa Barbara, Berke
ley, and San Jose, Calif., and
Portland.
"Chamber of Commerce
members and all citizens in
the area are urged to support
the building campaign," Pack
er said.
About five per cent of school
age Jsoys show evidences of
color deficiency or color
blindness. Only about one pet
cent of the girls have the
same trouble.

What of this Berlin busi
ness? Is it SERIOUS?
Could it lead to WAR?
TT COULD be serious.
Here's why:
West Berlin meaning by
that the sector of the city of
Berlin that is under Allied
control is a tiny island of
Western freedom and West
ern free enterprise lying deep
l within communist territory.
As compared with commu-
nist East Germany, which sur
rounds West Berlin on a 1 1
sides, West Berlin enjoys a
high degree of personal free
dom and a large measure of
material prosperity.
Human nature being hu
man nature, the communist
ruled East Germans can't help
looking at West Berlin with
longing eyes.

are Celtic in their origins.
Deeply rooted in Celtic tra
dition is the myth of Avalon,
the Island of Blessed Souls. In
Celtic mythology Avalon was

when the Russians undertook
their blockade a number of
years ago. The West Berlin
ers have come completely
over to our side. West Berlin
is one place in' the world
where there are no cries of
AMERICANS GO HOME!
The great fear of the peo
ple of West Berlin is that the
Allied forces will pull out
and leave them at the mercy
of the communists. That im
poses upon us the obligation
to stand pat.
If we should pull out in
the face of communist threats,
the ensuing loss of face would
be terrific. We might as well
shut up shop in Europe and
call it quits.
That is why . the West Ber
lin situation is so ticklish, to
say the least.-
Drivers licenses
Suspended Listed
Salem The department of
motor vehicles has released
names of 428 drivers whose
licenses were ordered sus
pended during the period be
ginning Nov. 10 and ending
Nov. 14.
Length of suspension varies,
depending on charges involv
ed, recommendation of court,
discretionary action by the
department or requirements
of Oregon law. The depart
ment said some of the lic
enses involving financial re
sponsibility and court recom
mendations may have been
reinstated after suspension
was ordered.
The department warned
drivers that the penalty for
driving while suspended is a
jail sentence of no less than
two days end up to six
months, and there may be im
posed a fine up to $500. Un
der licensing procedures, this
will also result in an addition
al years of suspension.

with awful girls.
MARILYN D. I have a
right to choose my own
friends.
MRS. L. D. - My husband
and I are very worried about
our 16-year-old daughter,
Marilyn, who has become
bosom pals with two awful
girls at school.
These girls walk around
the streets with cigarettes
dangling from their mouths.
They are rough, loud and vul
gar. Marilyn has always been
so timid and quiet nobody can
understand her suddenly go
ing around with such girls.
She has been brought up to
be a lady and she knows how
to behave like one. But when
she is with these girls she
acts the way they do.
Everyone says these girls
are very fast with boys. Mar
ilyn has hardly ever been out
on a date and I hate to think
that she will be getting her
first dating experiences with
such girls. We've forbidden
her to go with them but it
does no good.
MARILYN D. -1 am 16 and
that is certainly old enough
to choose my own friends. My
parents think that they can
boss me all my life.
My mother always told me
when I was a child to play or
not to play with certain chil
dren. As a result I never had
any fun. The kids I was sup
posed to play with never lik
ed me. I was always the spare
tire. Whenever they planned
outings and things I was left
out. They would just forget
about me.
My new friends are not bad
and do nothing wrong. It is
true they smoke, but most o
the kids in our school have
been doing that since 13 or 14
anyway only most of them
do it on the sly. My parents
have very prudish and old
fashioned ideas about what
a "lady" is supposed to act
like.
THE COUNCIL - We are
behind Marilyn in fighting for
her right to choose her own
friends. The child or adoles
cent who has not had this ex
perience cannot develop a ma
ture personality.
Parents cannot possibly
shield their children from all
the outside influences they
may consider bad. The best
they can do is instill good
standards at home. If the
children are reasonably hap
py at home and in school they
will, on the whole, abide both
those standards. Some may
make brief experimental ex
cursions " into tabooed terri
tory, but they will usually
quickly find their way back.
Parents who are horrified
or astounded at their chil
dren's selections do not al
ways know what a particular
friend means to the child. He
may be letting off a little re
bellious steam through vicar
ious enjoyment of the friend's
"different" mode of behavior
or he may have found things
others don't suspect in the
"undesirable" child.

We are not suggesting that
the L-LVs bow out of the pic
ture . completely Certainly
they should know their daugh
ter's friends and certainly
they should gently steer her
in the direction they consider
desirable. They should also
try to discover what Marilyn
sees in her new friends. From
both accounts, it would ap
pear, that she is fighting for
more independence from her
parents and trying to find a
little more personal expres
sion for herself.
If the L-D.'s were a little
less rigid in this matter, it is
very likely that Marilyn
would seek and find pleasure
with friends of her own sort.
