Vkay" Linda Bartine said to her
husband and hung up the
phone. She looked at the small
table cozily set for two and muttered
"Darn it, anyway!"
With a quick glance at the clock, she
put in extra leaves and reset the table
for four. Then she went into the tiny,
still-new kitchen, peeled more pota
toes, rolled out more biscuit dough, and
tossed more endive into the salad.
Tonight was the third time this
week that Steve had brought guests
home. It was just too much: married
only three months and she had fewer
evenings alone with him than when
they were engaged!
Just thinking about it made Linda
blink to keep back the tears. But when
Steve came in the door an hour later,
bringing Bill and Jonesy, she had tied
her dark pony tail with a hyacinth-blue
ribbon and put an amusing wisp of
apron around her slender waist.
She wanted to cling to Steve when
he kissed her, but there were Bill and
Jonesy, smiling their delight at being
asked to dinner.
"Smells wonderful," Bill said, sniffing
at the door of the kitchen.
"Bet we're having meat balls again,"
Jonesy said, happily.
It wasn't as if Bill and Jonesy were
important to Steve's career, Linda
thought when they were at the table
and Steve was being the expansive host.
